Easy informational instruction. Just started GIMP and I love it. As a airbrush artist and muralist (56 yrs. young), where were these programs 35 years ago? It's exciting to use a fresh medium that goes beyond my creativity. Videos such as yours make it so easy. I do suggest that every GIMP beginner (except PS people, etc.), pull a video that shows all the bells and whistles. Leaning tools and which ones do what, and there's several ways to do the same thing with exact same results was key for me. Hell, I keep a a YT window open and pop back and forth between tutorials like yours. Keep it coming and I'll stay tuned. Thanks....

If you try to erase part of an image without an alpha channel then you will not be able to see the image underneath. If you add an alpha channel then you can erase the image directly without using a layer mask. I rarely use a layer mask but I almost always use an alpha channel.

Your tutorials are so easy to understand. Thank you for your time, effort, and expertise!
@tutor4u12 жыл бұрын
There was no 'Add layer mask' stage. What I did was 'Add Alpha Channel'. The image was a jpg image. This type of image has no alpha channel and therefor cannot be made transparent. By adding an alpha channel, it allowed me to use the eraser tool with a soft brush to remove the unwanted parts of the image.

Hi tutor4u, You've great tutorials and clearly lots of humor. I had a great laugh looking at this. In Dutch we've got a saying: "beren op de weg zien". translated: Seeying bears on the road. Which means always seeing problems in advance, though it's not likely than any problems will occur. Sorry for my bad English. Keep up the good work and thanks.

If you're using GIMP version 2.8 then go to the "Windows" menu and select "Single-Window Mode." If you still don't see the window then go to the "Windows" menu and select "Dockable Dialogs" and then "Layers."

If you’re using GIMP version 2.8 then go to the “Windows” menu and select “Single-Window Mode.” If that doesn't work then Click on the “Windows” menu, at the top of the GIMP window, and you should see “Recently Closed Docs” and "Dockable Dialogs." One of these should help.

I have learned so much from your videos here on KZbin and from your website. Thank you so much for doing this. I'm still very new to Gimp and I've seen other videos that say to use "layer masks" instead of the eraser tool, but I don't quite understand the layer mask. Could you possibly do a video showing how to use it and WHY one would actually need to use it over the eraser? Thanks again!

Awesome video, I have learned so much for your tutorials. I do have one favor to ask there's any way you can make a small tutorial on how to cast shadows on GIMP like for example I did some background changes on some of my pictures with my wife but I'd like to have some shadows cast from our human bodies to make it look more realistic... Please whenever you have the chance... Thanks again for all your great videos...

A question is why would you have to go thru the 'Add layer mask' stage since we did not seem to use the mask for anything, I am saying the image could have been cut out directly anyway and placed into the road image and because it just a black and white image, do the saturation thingy and its all fine? I understand that using layer mask is when you want to apply your alpha and in order to have some transparency inside the real image... pls explain, I trust you understand this better.
@sj134512 жыл бұрын
okay, you have the menu bar to the right. mine does not have that so when you say to remove layers... im not quite sure how to do it by a certain layer and then end up removing the wrong one. basically, how do i get the menu to the right.

i am always wondering - are there really pros who (to zoom in/out, deselect stuff etc.) use menu bar, not shortcuts? And some stuff could've been done faster, but still good video.

i scaned a drawing of mine onto my computer for a better quality of editing it on gimp, and i use the free select tool to select a portion of my drawing to add color, but every time i try to fill it with the color i want it comes out grey,( like its being scaned) instead of like a blue or red color for example, is there a way to fix it so it could come out the right color i want it too?
@Darkryoka8 жыл бұрын
you also can change some colour on the picture.. example.. they have red blue green yellow, the blue colour you wanna change, just klik the blue box before moving the hue cursor bar..

Hi Can you post a video on how to make someone look thinner? Someone else posted a video on how to do that but it was really fast and I couldn't see what the heck they were doing. Thanks.
@senadirect12 жыл бұрын
My bad, I really meant Alpha channel, so to my inquiry, did we have to do that first, how about just snipping round and erasing directly the unwanted surrounding, since its not the image directly we are erasing. I thought Alphas channels are needed in cases of an image with intricate parts that cant be cut out but needs to be made transparent in combination with layer mask...
