This was great. My drum teacher 30 years ago taught me a bossa nova but the snare cross stick was simpler. Your cross stick sounds sooooo much better. Thank you so much.

i absolutely love your style of teaching! it's simplified and not too bogged down with technicalities, even though much of it does require lots of technique. i also love that you play the actual beat first so the viewer can simply just hear it all first before breaking it all down. i also get the feeling that you have made these videos to actually teach rather than stroke your own ego. your joy comes through loud and clear! i view all your videos and try to absorb whatever i can from each. thank you so much.

@BranMarPercussin: Seems like you are mixing up cultures. Its in Cuba where everybody plays to the Clave. In Brazil, the Clave is not a guideline like in Cuba!!!!!! P.S: John Doe is right: Take it easy, man and relax a bit!!!! @Gina Knight: Your Shaker would groove much more "brazilian like" if you would move the shaker up and down while playing. With that movement you get the tiny syncopation thas Samba and Bossa needs. Cheers, Niky

Yes, just a little bit of more swing and less "Rumba like" feel. You're really good, Gina... In the end, all kind of rhythm that came from samba need to be felt to be played... Here, your not sounding like a Walt Disney's character (hehehehe)... To get more "feel" you just need to vary the accents to between hi-hat, rim and kick just like you play the rim. I mean, the 3 kick is just a little bit harder them the 1 kick The first rim is a little bit harder then all others The 8th Hi-hat is a little bit harder the all others... But I think you really got the groove...

Swiping motion works great for brushes, I don't really like the sound on the hihats... the best option in my opinion is practicing different combinations and accents on the 16th notes and you can use groupings to play faster or not necessarily play 4 notes for every beat... Just a different thought. :)

Fantastic! Love the shaker or the ride! I love using a Bossa Nova pattern while doing metronome exercises (Bossa 2 is the coolest rhythm in my guitar processor and I can dial it up to ridiculous tempos, 190bpm - 240bpm is my range). At 208 it is perfect for the main riff from Angel of Death by Slayer, I couldn't believe that the first time I noticed it! Anyway thanks again, really cool video explaining the pattern and variations.

Hi, thank you so much, I finally get it...I have taught dance for 43 years...now Bossa Nova is in Vogue...I get what you are saying....I don't play any musical instruments....I am a trained latin dancer,..I am teaching a Bossa Nova line dance .however, first the music then the dance, most dance teachers don;t get that! I can't wait to teach my students the exact rhythm....You Rock....bring this video back to life!!! TKH

I love your comment. First the music - then the dance. I really love to dance. I just consider it drumming with my feet! hahaha......Music and dance are definitely interconnected and again - thank you so much for your comment Tracy! :) Have a fun with that class! I have a feeling your students are very lucky.

I think that in this style before the 2nd beat (after the first) may go a terzine on the hihat ti do a pattern like "tik tiki tik tik tik tik tik tik" on it to make the beat more relaxed and varied and less mechanic (i know that may be harder than the video example for a non expert but i've done that rythm with that variation and more inside like the terzines on the rim and the two octaves on the 2nd and 4th beat of the rythm on the floor tom like a feeling of the surdo put on the bossa rythm also
