Love this so much. I'm a guitar player who pretends to be a drummer when I sit behind my kit to build on my rhythm chops. Such a great crossover way to add to my modest guitar skillsets (and I like to bang on things sometimes). This helped me get a much better handle on second line drumming, something that has fascinated me for years. Thank you for sharing.

Fantastic! Being a piano player, I really appreciate a great drummer, especially one who can describe what they're doing easily.

Nice vocals Gina on "When The Saints". Also excellent lesson. It's interesting to me as I watch various videos on Second Line Drumming how many different ways there are to play. Lots of different bass drum ostinatos, etc. So now I am adding this to my catalog of ideas. Thanks!

helps greatly with context you singing along with "the saints". i often find many novice drummers forget (especially refering to hand drummers here) that the drumming is meant to be a song or part of a song, therefor you really need to know that song, or at least the words to follow or lead. i like what another second line drummer said of second line drumming that it dosn't really do "vertical mere time keeping" but "falls in the cracks" or is sort of in between, much like you conveyed too by using the two different lines with each other. nice work Gina

Ms. Gina is an extraordinary percussionist & has a uniquely relaxed approach as an instructor that inspires the student to recognize that what they desire to play well is well within their grasp. Thank you, Gina.

I'm a guitarist and I play a tune by John Scofield called "In The Cracks" from Flat Out (1989) with Johnny Vidacovich - anyone from New Orleans tell me if the beat is a particular style and if so, where I can find more info?
@meekoloco
@meekoloco 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I’m not from NOLA, but a drummer that knows the style pretty well. Johnny V is playing a slow version/variation of a street beat on the tune you mentioned.

@@meekoloco Hey thanks for the reply - anywhere that I can hear the particular beat, or is there a video of someone playing the basic style? I like to understand the rhythms that I play.

Once again Gina an excellent lesson. I would have liked had you carried out the clave onto the toms as you did in the end, but nonetheless you simplified a tedious lesson. Thanks.

Good video. think its helpful to mention that blues influenced music interprets the first half of the eighth note as a dotted eighth note and the latter half as a 16th note, that really unlocked the swing feel in my playing. Also improvisation and fluctuating dynamics is key so it doesn't sound robotic and not human. Sometimes forgetting that makes it sound too straight, mathematical and mechanical (or too white as some racists might put it).
