Tips she gave: 1. Level your canvas with C hooks (cup hooks screwed into each corner of canvas) to prevent art from changing when drying 2. Spray water on back of canvas especially in the corners to tighten canvas so paint doesn’t pool in the middle. It should sound like a drum when you flick the front with your finger. 3. Lumpy metallic paint- pour pouring medium first in the cup and then a little bit of metallic paint. Mix a little at a time until you get the amount you need. Mix paint by smashing the paint into the side of the cup without lifting the stir stick too much to reduce the amount of air bubbles that form in the paint. 4. Consistency- best way to gauge consistency by looking at how the paint falls back into the cup when dripping off the stir stick. If it forms a mound it’s on the thick side, if it blends right in it’s on the thin side, if it sinks it’s too thin and can break chemical bond that’ll lead to peeling and cracking. Paint thickens as it sits so make sure to check consistency before starting. 5. Mediums to use- Flotrol self levels and increases work time as it is a paint conditioner. It’s useful in paintings that will need a lot of tilting if it’s a big canvas. Liquitex dries faster. 6. Base coat is important because if you’re using silicone, the silicone can hit the canvas first and reject paint in that area. A base coat also helps to keep the composition of your cells. Apply base coat with a plastic putty knife. Use tool to push paint into the corners to make sure it goes over the corner so no spots are thinner than others. Torch your base coat to pop bubbles, especially if you’re using white as a base coat. You want your base coat to be a little thinner than the rest of your paints so the paints don’t fight back when you’re tilting. 7. Using silicone- if you’re using a thinner mix, use thinner silicone. You don’t want silicone that is thicker than your paint. She used one drop per cup of the OGX coconut milk hair serum. Thinner silicones don’t need to be mixed in very much, thicker ones do (about 9 turns in the cup) 8. Use appropriate sized cup for the amount of paint you’re using. Using too big of a cup in a flip cup will mix your colors too much and make muddy art. 9. When working with transparent paints, remember that they are and use something opaque with them so that they stand out from the background color. Like adding silver to a transparent pink to increase opacity. 10. Get square inches of canvas by multiplying length by width of canvas and divide by 28 = how many ounces of paint mixture you’ll need for your project. 11. Let your paint sit for a bit after it’s out of the cup to allow for all cells to come up. Heat will also help bring them up. Tilt very slowly to keep your cells and BE PATIENT. Bring the weight of the paint back to the center before you change directions. 12. Scrape your edges because it’ll pull paint with it and mess up your painting. It can also help you keep an eye that your painting is level because one side dripping more than the other will tell you that it’s not level.

I too have without a doubt watched 100+ videos and still learned so much more from this one! I skipped over this video several times before because the title had "pro tips" in the name and I was so tired of wasting my time with those videos that either didn't explain anything, they didn't speak clearly or loud enough, or they dragged them out with nonsense. You answered every question anyone trying this would have from start to finish and presented it beautifully!!!! Thank you so much and please continue to do these videos!!

Great video! I have been watching acrylic pour videos for a couple of months now and have only poured twice. The reason for that is I felt like I was lacking in the WHY behind all of the instructions I've been given and no one has been as clear as you were with the reasons WHY we need a certain consistency, or WHY we need a base coat, or WHY you don't pour too quickly and allow the paint to go back to the center before tipping to the other side!!!! You explained it so clearly and now I feel like I want to move forward and I'm not so afraid of failure! Like so many others who have commented on this video, I have to say that I got more information in this half-hour than in the dozens and dozens of hours of watching other videos! Sure I got to watch some artists create some amazing paintings, but no one has done a better job of instructing others on the how and why of acrylic pouring! Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Although your motivation might have been that you were probably just tired of having to answer the same questions over and over again, haha, the fact that you took the time to explain it all to us will probably mean that many of us will enjoy making art and will have many less failed attempts!

Hey Gina, This was the most no bullshit, get down to business, very informative video. As a sister artist whose watched many many videos on these very issues, I really appreciate the fact that you addressed all of them in such a direct and straightforward way. Yours is the first that (at least I have seen) where you talk about the importance of having a level canvas or whatever media you're using as well as how to not waste so much paint! Grrr... a pet peeve of mine that I see so many people doing. I mean, paint will literally be just running off and forming these huge puddles underneath. There's also not many (I've actually not seen any) videos talking about how much paint to use for what size canvas. Your tip for using the hooks to make it easier to get level is great! So thank you so much for taking the time to share all of the info- Take care girl, From a sister rule breaker named Gina 😽✨🌺🦋✌🏼 PS: Your pour turned out very cool. I love the metallics 💜👌🏼

I sometimes put some paint on a small canvas and see whether they flow down at the same rate. If one is too slow you add water. If one is too quick you need to add more paint. If they’re all too think you should do a Dutch Pour! It really is all about the consistency. There weren’t the KZbin artists when I started fluid art. Now there are so many artists showing people how to do it. I wish I’d had this video when I started.

I do the same things with the hooks but I use a small piece of plywood to screw the hooks into instead of my canvas. That way you only have to screw them in once not every time there is a new canvas. Just make sure the plywood is a bit smaller than the canvas. I have 3 sizes of plywood with screws installed.

One more tip: I tend to use large canvases and lots of paint, so I usually add a line of painter's tape all around the underside of the stretcher bars (where the staples are in this video) before inserting the C-hooks, or oversized push pins. This way, when the painting is dry, you just peel the tape off and the underside is neat and clean :)

Thank you so much for this video, am just learning to do pours and cells, and all of your tips made the process so easily understood. Your work is so brilliant! Wanted to share another tip about tightening loose canvases, the little slits in the corners of the wooden frame of the canvas can be filled with thin wedges of wood, tapped in, to tighten the entire canvas. My uncle used to make his own, and i saw him do this, especially on large ones that may have been stretched improperly by the manufacturer. Thanks again, and can't wait to learn more and see more of your artistry!

If I (the student) may be so bold may I give you (the teacher/art guru extraordinaire) a hint...although I use wooden sticks to stir my paint when in use I find a small (cocktail size) metal whisk is fantastic for the initial paint mix in small cups and doesn't cause bubbles. It can just be swished though water to clean between each colour. Again awesome tutorial and great result many thanks and have a great day from Western Australia :)

Thank you so much for all these tips ! I found one of your tutorials 9 months ago and I wrote down all tips from the beginning such as the panty hose over an empty bottle to strain any clumps , the spraying the back with water to tighten the canvas . But what I didn't know until now as I just started this style of painting now 4 months ago was the tip to add the floetral to the bottom of the cup before adding paint ya genius ! I do use the level that's an app on my iPhone for leveling after waking up to a lovely one that I know call "unicorn tears" because it was very pink, purple, and Aqua colors and those large cells slid down to one big sad streaked painting and I about shed a few tears over it haha. I've yet to use a corner catcher and now I definitely will ! and my husband who can't draw a stick man is actually excited to paint with me after I did a couple ! He's always feared painting and thanks to your one tutorial that was very firey colors and had what looked like yellow cashews forming on the edges blew us both away , I'll look to see which one was the deal breaker for him to do this with me. and he loves the support he gets in your Facebook group ! So we finally have a hobby we can both enjoy together instead of him going to write and record songs and me painting or making basically anything I'm inspired to make . So thank you!!! Even his blood pressure has gone down since significantly and his stress levels since he started, and I've never seen him not check to see a text but when he paints the phone goes away and that alone is a miracle ! He wasn't impressed enough with all the videos of how to do paint pours on a budget or anyone else's videos. It was just YOURS and the extremely chill and kind vibe you give off , so I hope that puts a smile on your face because we all know there's sooo many to chose from! I wish I knew the number of the video it was that made him want to go to lowes and get a bottle of floetral (which kept him feeling manly about this maybe because a craft store freaks him out lol) We've had some disastrous ones in the beginning but they've been tiring out beautifully and we've even sold quite a few and I make sure to order supplies I'm starting to get low on on amazon thru you only , and it's also nice to have a painting partner to say "ok it's great , do not tilt it one more time! " as we know sometimes we want that one color to reach an area and it's destroys the composition . I also didn't know about adding maybe silver flow to the translucent paints when having a black or dark base coat which I'm just now trying instead of playing it safe with white base only . A quick 2 questions? do you ever mix floetral with " liquitex medium and gloss "? (Green label) Because I just got some of the "liqutiex pouring medium and gloss" to varnish but also maybe to try a different medium even though I'm a bit scared to not use floetral when it's all I ever used , And I was thinking maybe this type of liquitex would be better for ring pours when I don't want any cells . Thank you for your service to all of us and your Facebook group ! We adore you!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I struggle with getting cells when I don’t want them. I get them whether I want them or not. I do think a professional pouring medium is less likely to give you accidental cells. I’m so glad you’re having a positive experience in the group! Thanks again for your kind words.

Love the cup size reminder...i have seen so many people use huge cups and so much gets lost and muddy on the sides! Thanx!!

Aside from cup size being an important factor, I've been toying with the idea of using a silicone cup (for various reasons, but mostly for ease of clean-up, and also to lessen my impact & toll on the environment). But I wonder if the 'slippy-slidiness' of a silicone cup (since nothing sticks to silicone) would somehow affect the pour... whether negative OR positive? I guess there's only one way to know... by trying & observing for myself. But silicone cups are not exactly the easiest to find nor the cheapest to buy... especially when searching specifically for a smaller cup... it obviously leaves fewer options to choose from. And I've been eyeing a particular brand of silicone measuring cups, available in a variety of sizes... from *REALLY* small: a half cup size (4 oz) to a 1 cup size (8 oz)... in addition to larger ones too. It's a brand/manufacturer which I personally love for home/kitchen-type products... but their products tend to be on the somewhat-pricier side. Fine & dandy for a good quality product meant for home/kitchen use... or even for an indispensable art tool if it's going to be a fantastic idea. But being on a fairly limited budget, I'd rather not sink good money into a pricey(-ish) experiment of trial & error if, right off the bat, it's theoretically obvious to those with more experience (or those who may have already tried it) that it's more than likely to fail or negatively mess with my pours. I've no clue myself, nor personal experience to draw from to hazard an educated guess, as I'm not *just* a newbie to this particular art form... I haven't even done my first pour yet!! lol. So any feedback or insight re: this idea would be appreciated Gina (or anyone else). Thanks! (and sorry for hijacking this thread, btw!)

I have used a silicone cup. It’s fine. The shape of your cup does make a difference in certain pours though. Tall and skinny? Shorter and wider? There’s a reason pouring artists studio area looks like an episode of hoarders. “I wonder what would happen if I used this...”

Gina how do you know if paint is transparent or opaque? I’ve never noticed that when buying paints?
@dianamcdaniel88805 жыл бұрын
It’s at the top of the tiny letters near the bottom of the tube. It should say transparent, translucent, semi-opaque or opaque. The opaque would be your background color

I needed this video! When I first started out my paintings were awesome and then somewhere along the way, after a few months they started looking a little lackluster. You addressed everything I was doing wrong 🙌🏾
