Ginchy and Guillemont (France) 2006

Irish Naval Association participate in the ceremonies in Ginchy and Guillemont, France. Commemorating the victories of the 16th Irish Division who captured the Towns of Guillemont and Ginchy in September 1916. They then joined the 36th Ulster Division and won another Victory at Messines in 1917 One of the first Victories of WW1.

The brave men of the 16th Irish division must be remembered, these brave Irishmen may have fought as part of the British army, but they helped secure freedom of Europe as a whole and it would be a disgrace if Ireland did not remember these brave men.

can anybody tell me why there is no film in this video of the 16th Irish division wooden cross, that was sent over to Ginchey, to mark the 90th anniversary of the battle of Guillemont, and Ginchey, were 4,000 Irishmen died in 6 days of battle,from the 3 to the 9 of september? the cross is now back at the war memorial dublin.

Researching the Ginchy battle I found out that a grandson of Charles Dickens, Major Cedric Dickens, was killed the same day at the nearby Bouleaux Wood. So: many Irishmen, a grandson of Charles Dickens and many Bavarians (including my great-grandfather) died there in northern France in the beautiful Picardy with its friendly people. WWI in fact was an european catastrophe.

You are the one mistaken gaelicpiper, the majority of those men went back to Ireland and fought in the Free State Forces. Those who fought in the 16th (Irish) Division played as big a part in Irelands future as those who fought in the GPO.
