RIP King Baker!I could watch and listen to Ginger all day long and do so often.I am 55 years old and in the last few months have developed a strong desire to learn how to play.Been listening to Cream for years but watching these clips and live concert footage has lit a fire under my ass to play.I sang in bands for years and would always play on our drummers kit(or try to) and could keep simple beats in his absence so we could at least practice.Screw it,I'm going for it! Thank you Ginger for your contributions and you will never be equaled,as originals cannot be.Again,rest in peace Mr Baker.

Ginger used a series of specific note values, displaced rudiments, stickings/flams, flam taps, paradiddles, double paradiddles, and rolls in his solos and drove those into his toms and snare in a wide variety of ways syncopating his double paradiddle 6-strokes against his hi-hat and bass drum to get his African rhythmic effects. Undoubtedly, he had his own sound from his drum tuning and from his stick attacks on the rims. He organizes his solos in a series of rudimental and rhythmic themes played at mid to fast tempos.and cut time.with his simple note values being subdivided to add a more complex sound to his playing.

I feel very bad for Ginger because as he fields the audience members' questions a professional healthcare provider can readily hear his poor pulmonary function (shortness of breath). In virtually every photo or video of him, there's the ubiquitous cigarette, either between his lips or in one of his hands. By the time he quit using smack, the damage to his heart and lungs was irreparable. Over the years, heroin weakened him significantly, but chain smoking was his death knell. 😢

If u listened to Ginger talking earlier, he said the drummer is there to compliment the other musicians. The drummer can actually help make the musicians play better. That is exactly Ringo’s style. Ringo was no Ginger Baker, but he understood what his job was in the Beatles. No one at the time could have been better for that particular job. Except possibly Charlie Watts.

As a drummer playing for a very long time , 3 guys influenced me in different ways, Buddy ,Ginger ,and Billy. And i've met and seen just about every great from Bellson, to Roach ,Weckl to Chambers ,Lang to Donati , Tony to Elvin. For me the mark of a great drummer is an original fingerprint ,for certain Baker has always had his own fingerprint. With your eyes closed you can never mistake Ginger for anyone else. The first time I heard him I knew instantly that rock music and more correctly ( fusion ) melding jazz,rock and blues music would all change. This video is wonderful to me , because we hear some of Gingers thoughts and we also hear some interesting observations on why he plays what he plays. His comment about Ludwig drums and Zildjians made me smile ,because I used Ludwig drums exclusively during the 60's and 70's. I also appreciated his take on world beat rhythms, I still love the way he plays to this day. Baker raised the bar during his Cream days ,and even now brings his knowledge and creativity to any music he plays. Viva Ginger Baker!!!!

I have concluded that the fusion genre is a fusion of funk and jazz; fusing together swing shuffle grooves and funk (also called soul) grooves. For me Ginger Baker might have time and swing but is not a funky groove drummer with soul and did not influence the development of fusion

Actually your take is wrong, fusion is 2 or more musics that are joined together. It does not matter if it's flamenco and reggae ,or reggae and latin ,or jazz and ska ,or jazz ,rock,reggae,world beat and samba. Once you fuse things together it's fusion, if funk is not in the music it still can be fusion. And if you take funk and fuse it with reggae, samba,latin etc it is also fusion.As for Baker not influencing fusion, man I suggest you understand the meaning of fusion music. Probably the most important drummer of the 60's because of what he brought to the table.

I’ve seen Ginger play both straight and out of his head and he is just head and shoulders above any other drummer I’ve heard. This video is a perfect example - he is playing several rhythms at once. Incredible. I love. It that he intersperses his playing with talking about his early career with Graham, Dick, Jack, alexis - that’s in my days of living in London and doing all the jazz and blues clubs. Great days.

He had degenerative arthritis of the spine. Probably in the early stages, here, but in his last few years he was in permanent pain. He used to say “God is keeping me alive - and in as much pain as possible - to punish me for my past deeds” I think that had a lot to do with why he was so cranky near the end.

This video is a jewel.If you don't believe that he is the best or you aren't turned on by his playing it all boils down to a personal opinion,which everyone is entitled to and I don't try to change anyone's cause it's not my business.I think this video is very informative and shows a very polite and courteous Ginger Baker that is always overshadowed by his genuine disdain for nonsensical interviews and interviewers with the same questions he's answered a hundred times over.I have yet to see a clip where he has disrespected anyone seeking knowledge about his craft.Let us not forget that his last 10 years or so were days of agonizing pain and illness and I truly believe battling regrets for his reckless years of carefree living and alot of poor decisions which he freely admits.Those who have fallen from the top usually hide and fall into obscurity.Not so with Mr Baker who had no problem telling the world I was broke at the time, or am currently broke.That takes humility and integrity,two words rarely seen in a Ginger Baker story.Frankly I am so sorry I missed the opportunity to get to see him play live or at the functions such as this.One of my regrets.Love ya Ginger and thank you for the music and advice.May you rest in peace.

Witnessed Ginger Baker at MI in '88 or '89. He was a little drunk as he strolled on stage with a bottle of Heineken. He jammed with Tim Bogert definitely and maybe Paul Gilbert? He had a lit cigarette hanging off his lip most of the time and at one point while playing - this left an impression - he spit the butt into the air and tapped it with a drumstick into space w/out missing a beat.

LOL, I was there; graduated PIT in '89. He was definitely drunk and a lot more sloppy than this video. For some reason I remember that he sounded kind of silly explaining to a room full of music students that if you divide a note up into three equal parts it's called a triplet. Was it Paul Gilbert or Chris Wyatt?

Yes drum rudiments was the basis of his overall playing. As a young drummer in the late 60s and early 70s, it took me awhile to figure this out, but I did. Also listening to Carmine Appice was a great instructor also.

@@ufafgd I have the original Carmine Appice book as well as I attended a drum clinic conducted by Carmine Appice..a great drummer in his genre of music. I still use some of his grooves and figures taught to me by my first drum set instructor who's style was very much influenced by Carmine Appice.

His journey overland in 1971 in his range rover across the Sahara to play drums with the Nigerian drummers was truly amazing in itself as was his love of Polo which I love now after watching a game of Polo at Shogram near Tirich Mir base camp the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush. The timing like Gingers was perfect as we had no idea there was a polo match going on and watching elders on horseback charging after the guy with the goat carcass amazed us. Its traditional there and has been going on for centuries.

His analysis was very good. I would have asked him about African versus Arabic rhythms. African makes your hips go forward and aft. Arabic drums make your hips move right to left. Why? Interesting. Should have asked if both bass drums are the same? What did he think of modern double pedals on one bass drum with two strikers?

Buddy Rich was said to be the best technician, ever, but Ginger Baker's play is far more evocative. He takes you places. Not that I'd ever get in a car with the guy.

I thought I would just peek in on this clinic for a minute. 55 minutes later and I’m still watching. I’ve always seen Ginger Baker as a sort of enigma. It’s hard to understand all the experiences that have shaped Ginger, but between the documentary on him (Beware of Mr. Baker) and the John McLaughlin biography (Bathed in Lightning) you can sort of begin to picture how he came into his own. Phil Seamen was his hero, and Phil was known as THE English jazz drummer in the 50’s/60’s club circuit. Phil played Ginger a few African drum recordings, which forever turned Ginger in a new direction. Phil also introduced Ginger to his first shot of Heroin, the same night he played the African records...so, take what you will from that. Regardless, the man was an impeccable drummer, and that shows, considering he never practiced toward the end.

I believe it was Dicky DeVere who first supplied Ginger with heroin, apparently Phil Seaman was horrified. So it says in his autobiog…

Ginger’s time is perfect. I recall an old Rolling Stone Interview where he was talking about recording in the studio with Cream. The recording engineer couldn’t believe that every take of a song came out exactly the same length of time. Like if it was 3 minutes and 10 seconds it would be the same on every take.
