I truly mean this when I say that this is one of my favorite videos that Ginger Root has made thus far. Sound wise I wanted “Only You” to be my last “on the nose” attempt at writing a classic “driving down the highway at night time type city pop track”, but I think it turned out to be something much more than the genre I’ve been so closely associated with. Video wise, I told David I wanted to try to push for something more abstract. I wanted to push ourselves to make something out of our comfort zone. So we filmed it separately in two completely different countries. God I hope the algorithm lets people see this one because if there’s any video I wish people watch from the “SHINBANGUMI” cycle, it’s this one. Of course, could not have done it without GR team USA and GR team Japan. Thank you for taking the time to read and watch.

I'm not gonna lie, something about this video made me genuinely cry. I dunno if it makes sense or if it was the goal, but in my interpretation, this video (especially in conjunction with the plot with the singles of this album so far) is a metaphor for the feeling of being an artist surrounded by your creations -- your pride and joy, your expression of your soul, your culmination of your life's experience as an artist -- and suddenly buckling and being overwhelmed by everything all falling onto you. You've created something beautiful and poignant that means a lot to yourself and a lot of people, but now the stakes people have imposed about it and the consequences on your decisions surrounding it have caused it to turn on you -- making you feel like you're trapped in your own dreams until you feel like it's become a nightmare, and with the knowledge that you'll eventually have to wake up and make a very tough decision that's going to affect you and everyone around you on whether it gets to continue. As a struggling creative trying to make it in the world, dealing with concerns of my ability to pursue my dreams and create what I want, especially under the understanding that there are extremely big people in high places of corporate power who want to do very troubling things to me for my artwork... it's quite sobering to see all those concerns manifest into such a well-made, tense, but beautiful music video. Thank you Mr. Root, long live Ginger Root Productions.

Proud member of Juban Network, the TV station conglomerate of your dreams. But really, this video has resonated with me the most out of all of them so far. It's relatable to have anxiety about making life decisions, especially when it affects others around you, and when it feels like you could be "missing out" on whatever you don't pick. Sylvia Plath's Fig Tree analogy and all that. Also sometimes wanting to chase outside opinions to give you the answer when really you just need to make decisions for yourself. I took 2:58 as an attempt to explore multiple options at once but it turning out to be unfeasible and chaotic. Anyway, that's my takeaway, and late to comment but just wanted to jot down my thoughts. The ambiguity of this video will lead others to have different interpretations, which is partly what's so great about it. I get Charlie Kaufman vibes, which is high praise coming from this cinephile 😅 Really well done 👏
