Tranquilizers are not performance-enhancing for chess, and for almost everyone would be a huge handicap, so there would be no rules against her taking them. Beth is an unusual case because she is addicted to the drugs, has a very high tolerance, and has become conditioned to visualizing the game under their influence.

You don't need to know a lot about chess to enjoy the show. It's about Beth gripping with her demons more than anything else. Also the camera work and acting during the chess scenes makes them really enjoyable to watch even if you don't understand what is happening on the board.

"There's specific rules. How would she know how to play it?" Well, she's extraordinarily smart and she's very observant. So, while she won't get all the rules and certainly won't pick up strategies on her own, she's seen how each of the pieces move and she's trying to puzzle the whole thing out for herself. And the drugs aid her in her visualizing. At least, at first.

Actually, the main actress is blonde - she's wearing a wig all the way through because both she and the director felt the character should be a red head.

So glad you're watching this! Also if you're interested after you've finished the show, there's quite a few videos where chess experts explain certain scenes and the authenticity of it. Definitely look out for the one where Magnus Carlsen, who is considered the best player in the world at the moment, talks about some of the chess scenes.

Chess typically uses contrasting pieces - they don't have to be white and black. When wood is used, sometimes natural finishes are used on light woods and dark woods. Sometimes the pieces are painted (red and blue, pink and purple for example). Sometimes the pieces are metal and may be silver and gold. There are many options. Tournament boards and pieces have to be a certain size. At tournaments you need an approved clock and paper to record your moves (at least you used to - been a while for me). The show will portray the use of adjournments, however these are no longer allowed.

The ability to play blindfolded is common among enough top players that some of them use it as a training exercise. I never was quite that good, so not me, but I saw it often enough.

Beth's mother had a PhD in math - however, she had problems with psychosis when she stopped taking her meds. Alice became suicidal. Alice was from a wealthy family that cut her off because of the mental illness. In the 1950s/60s, mental illness was not accepted in society.

When Alma Wheatly takes Beth shopping and doesn't get her a chess set, I am puzzled at the story briefly. Beth is smart and resourceful. Admittedly, I was born into a poor family and grew up in the late 60s/early 70s, but I remember making a lot of the things I wanted. I used cardboard boxes available free from stores, paper mache, etc. My mother was a seamstress and had lots of scrap material. Certainly Beth should have had things around her to make her own chess set. Plot hole IMHO.

"How come chess is so cool?" Thank you for this delightful comment. I've seen several reactions to this series and everyone says something similar to what you said: "I don't get good vibes from him." and they are all correct in thinking so. Considering you'd seen him for about 20 seconds at that point, maybe that actor should get an award. I am always impressed by great or even good acting because I know I couldn't do it. Rene, the comment that only colored girls work reflects the entire attitude that men worked for money and women took care of the home and family, and not so much the race. This was about the time of MLK and blacks still had to sit at the back of the bus, couldn't get the best jobs so teenage girls that worked were usually colored. Yes it is reprehensible but blacks being downtrodden back then was just everyday life. As a Canadian, I do find America's obsession with race to be quite disturbing, even creepy. Oh, we get it Rene. About the distraction of a period. You ought to try being a man and have the distraction that even marginally attractive women can elicit. Bill Burr does a great bit on exactly what we go through for 60+ years of our lives

Yeah, the period scene also made me worry - idk how people survived that before Ibuprofen. I usually have at least one or two days where I'm just in bed all day crying, and that's WITH pain killers. Never thrown up though. The effects are so individually different... I get horrible cramps and back pains, but rarely nausea. Some people don't really feel anything. Some people get pains so bad they pass out regularly. So unfair.
@jeffreyphipps1507 Жыл бұрын
Beth thinks that the drugs are helping her - that's not the reason she can see the board. She's not mentally ill, she's "gifted". When I was playing piano as a child prodigy I realized that I was memorizing the sheet music - Beethoven's 5th Symphony in Cm was 52 pages and I had memorized them. When I was in typing courses (before computers) I memorized the sheet and didn't have to look again. I never used drugs. It's not entirely unlikely that Beth is on the Autism Spectrum, something completely unknown in the time frame portrayed and still largely misunderstood for women today. Autism is different for women than for men.

People play chess without looking a lot. It's only 64 squares and 16 peices. Most of which are duplicates. It's like remembering a deck of cards and their values. Most people can.

Drugs can push back the boundaries of the mind, she could normally visualize the game as she does, but the drugs affect how easy, focused or intrinsic the experience is. And equally the opposite. But either way, drugs are bad.. Mmmkay.

The school system really botches teaching health, it’s sad. Most people’s periods are around 5-7 days plus pre and post systems. If someone’s period is only 2 days long they are really lucky lol. It’s nice to see you put the effort into learning about it. A lot of people wouldn’t bother. 👍

I have been watching KZbin videos. Many of them are called "Movie reactions" Where people watch films on line and share their impression...of course there are many on the Queens Gambit. These people do not know chess but that is very forgivable. The glaring misperceptions I found amusing are these. 1) viewers assume in the last Episode when Harmon Defeated Borgoff she Became world champion. This was a Soviet Invitational..not a world Championship match. Borgoff would retain the Title until a candidates Match would take place. (Good plot for 2nd Season?) 2) Women should be equal To men because chess is Cerebral not physical. Up to that point women Never had ratings at the Level of the men's game. World champion Bobby Fischer always mentions Physical exercise as Important due to the Stamina needed for Many hours over the board. In those days Men worked out..women Not as much (today Women go to the gym To work out also) *there are many more examples but I'll let you share what you have noticed!

To think we are aware of every eyeball full is myopic. Time is not evenly chronological, not in cinema. Willing suspension of disbelief. Quit over analyzing. You're going to ruin the ride for yourself. Do you always do this?
