Tranquilizers were given to orphans throughout the 1950's to keep them calm as well as making them easier to control. You'll see them pop up through out the show quite a bit. So glad you guys are watching this series, it's amazing!

Benzodiazepines, Judy Garland was also addicted to these. They were given to her by MGM Studios as a means to help get to sleep and then given uppers in the morning.

For people who don’t know what benzodiazepines are, some examples are Xanax, Valium, Ativan, etc. The pills in the show are fake but they were supposed to be Librium like they are in the book

The crazy thing is that people like this actually exist. Magnus Carlsen, the best chess player in the world did the same exact thing (play multiple people at the same time) except with more people. He also played blind and so on. The way these people's minds work is absolutely insane.

@@tink6225 no i didn't mean to bring the show down or hate. the show is so good at making it look cool while making it being very realistic at the same time. i'm just trying to show that people irl can actually do this because for beginners it may look impossible and unrealistic. it's a testament to how humans can reach these levels of intelligence and that's just cool to see

I truly don’t understand how playing chess blind works? How is it even remotely possible?
@cameronjosephvideos5942
@cameronjosephvideos5942 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSofkujepanen It's pretty simple in theory. People call out what squares things are being moved to and all you have to do is remember what piece is on what square at any given time. Now you just need to be really good at visualizing and remembering all that information. Most people get tripped up by those parts. Kind of envious to be honest, I can't even think ahead more than three or four moves playing chess.

They used to tranquilize kids in orphanages to make them easier to control. Also doctors heavily prescribed tranquilizers to women for basically any reason….including on request of husbands or being seen as too outspoken.
@Saphthings
@Saphthings 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, just commented about it. It's more than just orphanages, it went deeper into a whole "give drugs to women so they stop complaining about things" thing.

as seen in BeWitched. Their neighbours, the wife being "off her meds" bc of the things that she sees Samantha doing, is a running joke. She's really infantilized.

In 1962 my mom was prescribed tranquilizers while she was PREGNANT with my older sister! Mom told me my sister slept 24/7 until she was 3 months old. She literally had to wake her up to feed her. She even slept through her baths.

Ah i love the queens gambit, its such an original story. kinda refreshing with all that superhero overload these days scary fact: they actually did give the kids in orphanages pills to keep them calm, so a lot of them got addicted early on. they ofc got banned at some point. Beth has a genius, mathematical mind so we see how she (and probably other pro chess players) goes through every possible move in imagination to decide what to play next

SO happy y'all decided to watch this series. Since it came out on Netflix I've seen it easily 20 times, it's o e of my favourites to recommend to others! As for the tranquilizers in the orphanage - it was extremely common practice for childrens homes in the 40s/50s to medicate the children with tranqs to make them "easier to handle". As it happens in the show, it was banned in the mid-50s. They might have still had them for children over a certain age like Jolene. Enjoy the rest of the series, it only gets better!

Tranquilizers were unfortunately very common in the ‘50s in not only orphanages but also psych wards and housewives. It was a way to keep those above them in control; those ahead of them, truly believed they were saving them from themselves. I got my husband hooked to this show and we love Beth. The actress who plays the younger version of both Beth and Jolene did an excellent job!

Check is when the king is in danger of being captured, but the player has a way to escape/defend. Checkmate is the end of the game because the king is in a position to be captured and there's no way to avoid it. Some chess players will concede a match long before a checkmate actually happens because they know they don't have a way to win.

When I first saw this episode, I thought Beth was going to break in and grab a few handfuls of tranquilizers and shove them in her pockets, to hide in her room. I was NOT expecting her to immediately shove fistfuls of them down her throat. I was like, "Holy shit!" That was so insane.

When this series first came out, I felt like watching it because my uncle always liked chess, but his sons never wanted to play, so once I watched the series in quarantine, I actually taught myself to play a bit so my uncle and I could eventually play and I was tired of seeing him look like the old man from the Pixar short, Geri's Game lmao. Chess is definitely a game not everyone goes to first, but it truly is great for some people with ADHD (like it runs in my family) because we (at least, my uncle and I) can put our focus into a fun game of strategy, even if it's just to forget things for at least an hour. I'm THRILLED to see you guys reacting to this series because it's for sure a personal favorite, something I could find myself going back to to even play in the background. Can't wait to see the rest of this series with you guys, always keep up the great content!

These facts are the reason I find the title of “American horror stories” so interesting, bc so many kids and adults live a reality here that is horrific and we all just assume good is being done and they use that liberty against us.

I'm seeing this 1 year later. Beth did not Become world champion by beating Borgov. She won the Moscow invitational, which would have made her rating soar to be one of the strongest players in the world..Borgov would have had about 2800. Beth would be in 2700 range. To become world champion she would have to win a round Robin tournament and if victorious , she would have to play Borgov in a 12 game match.
