Grew up in the Balt Washington area...I actually played high school ball there and used to play against the extras for their rookie team for try outs at Ft Meade (back when they still allowed that). I was a very good player pre injury and could dunk very easily and had offers to schools...my buddy that went up with me ended up going to Rhose Island U. and was All Atlantic 10 Freshman Team. They would run shirt and skins for a third team. Motta was the coach. By the second or third week the vets would come in and everything would change. It's so weird, you'd think that this would have been the darkest day ever for Seattle sports fans, yet pretty much nobody remembers the Sonics honking a 3-2 lead and losing game 7 at home. I'm a lifelong Sonics fan, I was 14 when the Sonics blew that 3-2 lead in the 1978 Finals. Dennis Johnson going 0-14 from the field in game 7. I was depressed for 3 or 4 weeks after that devastating loss. To this day, outside of the day the Seattle announced the settlement with Clay Bennett and Oklahoma City to relocate, it was, and still is my number one most painful sports memory. The Super Bowl against the Steelers would be the next. The Washington Huskies being put on probation in 1993, causing Don James to prematurely retire in protest to the sanctions handed down by the Pac 10 was another terrible memory. It derailed the start of a dynasty and all the momentum they had from a great 3 year run. 1991 Co-National Champions and a 22-game winning streak. The retirement of Don James along with the sanctions really killed the program....they still won and were good, but it was never the same.

Why did Wes Unseld win the finals MVP over Elvin Hayes?
@Gerkinstock16 жыл бұрын
Amazing that two teams with a combined regular season win total of 91 actually made the finals in 1978. That's because Bill Walton injured himself 60 games into the season, when his Portland Trailblazers were 50-10.

Cinderella playoff runs also were just more common in that era. From 71-81 you had the Bullets in 71, Suns in 76, Bullets in 78 and Rockets in 81.

The Sonics started the 1978 season 5-17. Bob Hopkins, their coach was fired and Lenny Wilkens took over and the Sonics went 42-18 the rest of the season. Lenny came in and changed the starting lineup and acquired Gus Williams from the Warriors. Second year player and future Hall-of-Famer Dennis Johnson was put in the starting lineup with newly acquired Gus Williams and rookie and future Hall-of-Famer Jack Sikma was placed in the starting lineup as well. Plus, "Downtown" Freddy Brown had been injured to start the season and just started playing again. DJ and Gus were so good that Fred Brown who was a starter before his injury, started to come off the bench. So, the Sonics, even though they finished 47-35 that season, they were not at all the same team that started 5-17 and Lenny Wilkens changed 4 out of the 5 players in the starting lineup adding two young future Hall-of-Famers and acquiring Gus Williams from Golden state and putting him in as well. Gus Williams was the leading scorer for the Sonics every year from that point forward for 6 consecutive seasons. He also averaged 29 points per game in the 1979 Finals. So, by the time the Sonics got to playoffs in 1978, they were literally a much better team than their overall record. The Bullets had a veteran team that had been to the 1971 & 1975 Finals, but they got hot in the playoffs in 1978. They were also a better team than their 44-38 record indicated. The following two seasons (1978-79 & 1979-80) the Sonics would win over 50 games the following two seasons going 52-30 in 1979 & 56-26 in 1980. The Bullets would have a 54-28 record in 1979. There was a lot more parity back in the 70s. The top teams in the league were more evenly matched and it was much more competitive back then. So, a team winning 50-60 games back then, were usually little better than their overall record might indicate. From top to bottom the NBA was just more competitive back then. In today's NBA you have Superstars hooking up on the same teams to form super teams which really dillutes the talent for the other teams. Today's NBA is so top heavy. You just don't have as many good teams at the top of the league. In essence, it is easier for a team today to accumulate more wins than in the mid to late 70s when the talent was more evenly distributed....also, there weren't as many teams back then.

I thought Dandridge should have won, but Hayes certainly should have been next. Either would have been more justifiable..

As someone who was born, raised, and still lives in the DC metropolitan area, it makes me happy when I see videos of professional sports teams in DC winning championships. Cause we ain't got that much luck.

I know. But I wasn't alive when it happen. My dad was in the DC area at the time when it happen last and he remembers the atmosphere. Also I'm not really into the NFL. But if the Redskins do well, that's great. But I'm not into them like how I am for the Nats and Caps. And Wizards, I root for them, but it's not like the same level. Ya know?

No Champaign either, owner Abe Pollin got on the team bus, stopped at a liquor store got out his credit card and told the team to buy the biggest bottle of Champaign they could find. Before that they just poured bottles of beer on each other.

@brucedavis76 i understand where youre coming from though. one year of sonics-bullets was enough. but they ended up playing against each other the very next yr!!!!! now THAT series WAS boring. not saying that because seattle won, other than game 1,parts of games 3&4,this series sucked.Game 2 was NOT televised in the Memphis area locally(pre-empted by the CBS evening movie). there was no 3pt line either.
