In the early episodes I've always liked Zenzou as the funny character that delivers pizza and reads jump but in the shogun assassination arc he suddenly became much more and that is what I really like about this series, Sorachi sensei can give every funny side character an important background story, love it

I know! His writing really makes you feel and appreciate every character within the series..Going from not really caring much about their introductions as gags but revealed much later to have a bigger role in the story, it's crazy!

I really like the episode with the little clairvoyant girl in which Zenzou was supposed to kidnap her but decided to do the right thing instead and protect her at the risk of his life. He's a great character IMO and I keep appreciating him more and more with each rewatch.

Definitely. He is one of the more underrated characters in the series and for as little as we see him, Sorachi still makes each of his appearances interesting :)

A comment said Tsukuyo was not originally planned to return after Yoshiwara in Flames. But because people liked her, they asked Sorachi for more, and we got Red Spider. This stood out to me because we get a lot of the Hyakka, who are an unconventional group of ninjas. And then we have the Oniwaban, who follow the ninja creed. In Shogun Assassination, we saw some very detailed designs that were never remembered. Many completely forgot that Hattori’s closest group debuted earlier when Katsura tried to rescue Elizabeth. The Shinigami arc was pushed back and later overlooked because of the change. Asaemon was supposedly the one meant to join the main cast as a regular and not Tsukuyo. This, combined with the former, is making me think of how much better flow the series would have for many other characters that didn't have an identity issue taking over. I'm not saying we would have seen the Oniwaban more so than the Hyakka because they do their work in the shadows. But we definitely would have gotten more than what was shown. And more time for Sarutobi and Zenzo to shine. We didn't need another group of ninjas. I mean, we've seen Sacchan around the Shogun in the early stages of Gintama. Of course, the whole Oniwaban had a small amount of time spent connected to the Shogun, but there still could have been more hints given to make that a more robust connection for the Shogun arc.
