I don’t usually shill my Patreon but ad revenue hasn’t been great lately and if I want to continue making videos, I need to be making a bit more income than now. Anyways, thanks again! *Quick clarification on the video - I stated that Shoyou was killed for “no good reason.” There was indeed reason - primarily because he went against the rules of the Naraku and abandoned them and all that stuff. My point here was that it was all unfair to Yoshida Shoyou the individual and that those rules are arbitrary and stupid, so don’t take my words too literally there.

gintama is a story of an adult man who made mistakes, encountered setbacks, fought desperately, lost everything and got lost in despair, but at the end of the day, he found simple pleasure in simple things and simple interactions,. it's a story of a man who've been through hell and back, not a boy who are just on his way there,. that's why not everyone can relate, becuz not everyone has a deep concept of what this anime truly represents,.

@@sejalb725 It's tough to properly articulate it, but to put it simply. It's basically a very self aware series that is about the hilarity, beauty and tragedy of life. Characters trying to find purpose and make their way through a world that is honestly pretty strange. It's a really large time investment but if stuck with, the payoff is worth it. (Though for anyone starting it, I would recommend starting at ep 3 since 1-2 are a filler special that has nothing to do with anything and kind of just confuses people since the story begins at 3)

You are 100% right about the duality of hope and hopelessness. All villains in Gintama have a fatalistic attitude because of that. They either gave up fighting or gave up on a better future. It is the opposite of what Gintoki represents. Takasugi is obviously the best example of that. But another one who has a very similar attitude is Isaburo. Because he once believed in that anyone can change for the better when they tried enough. However, then when he tried to do something good, it cost him his family, his everything. That's why he stood against what Gintama stood for, against changing the future, building a new life and seeking happiness again. But then, even he, without realizing, build a new family with Nobume. And Nobume gave him new hope when he didn't even knew until later. That's what I love about Gintama. The shows narrative doesn't blame characters for their believes, doesn't just go "they are wrong" for the villains. It gives them depth, he lets them feel what they feel even if they are wrong.

Everyone forgets the Shinigami arc. That's where a part of Gintoki's past was revealed that everyone seems to overlook - He was willing to give everything up at one point. When he beat up that guy that wanted to sell his daughter to pay off his debt. He was imprisoned and hopeless, he didn't care if he died or not - but the old man talked to him, and a little girl talked to him, and they both helped him out. They both helped him to push through and not be suicidal anymore. Then Otose found him in prisoner clothes at her husbands grave, and he promised to protect her.

This duality is even made clear in Gintoki's design. Black undershirt with a white yukata over? Each of his arms clad in different colors (black vs white)? The fact that the black is the clothe closer to Gintoki but the white takes up a greater part of his scholor scheme? The grey/silver hair? I mean come on, this man knew what he was doing

Gintama is like real life. Like some people joke "it's all fun and games until somebody dies". Well, real life tends to be like that. Life it's not all the time a depressing drama, or a sitcom, or an action series, or slice of life. Life is all of that. And the Yorozuya are like real human beings: they are jerks in moments, they are friendly in moments, they are funny, they are serious, and they help each other. Life doesn't have perfect people. Just people.

With the manga concluded, all I can say is that this series has truly lived beautifully until the very end. Just like Gintoki, this manga also has its fair share of hardships. The threat of cancellation and people doubting the longevity of the series are the things that Gorilla sensei face early on in the serialisation but he persevered and after 15 years of serialisation, Gintama has reached its natural conclusion. Now all that remains is the translated final chapter and the eventual release of the anime adaptation of the finale. It has been a wild ride but all good things must come to an end. Thank you Gorilla sensei.

What I've found really wholesome about the Silver Soul Arc is that Gintoki barely does anything. He definitely doesn't get anything done by himself. What I mean is, the climax of the story bring most of the characters we met along the way to help, all reunited to help protect what Gintoki and the Yorozuya protected all along. All there because Gintoki was there in the first place. All of Kabukicho, the Shinsengumi, the Oniwabanshuu, the Joui, the Ketsuno and Shirino Clans, Gengai and the robots, etc. I personally appreciate the moment when the Shinsengumi shows up. It's the only moment in the series (Besides Utsuro's face reveal, I guess) in which we see Gintoki lose hope and give up; he wouldn't have gotten out of this one on his own. The Shinsengumi's giving back the kindness they were given earlier in the series. Gintoki inspired all these people to act, overshadowing anything he could've accomplished on his own. He harvested what he had sown over the years, in a way.

I remember the first time I watched Gintama, it was the time of fansub and since Gintama was not very popular there was only 25 episode subbed and I got hooked immediatly because it was the only subbed show with this kind of humor. Then I had to wait months for a new fansub team to pick up the anime and they would release 1 episode every 2-3 weeks but they were really pationate and did such an amazing job with the translation and the references. I remember downloading the first 2 seasons and watching them again and again on my laptop. I remember finding the manga in a shop specialized in manga and it could only be found in that one shop and nowhere and buying 30 volumes on the moment. Reading again and again every single pages, sharing the manga with my friend. For me Gintama has a special place in my heart, because following this show since nearly the beginning it's like we have grown up togethere and because of that I think it will stay my favourite anime of all time. I hate myself, I'm trying to express how much I love Gintama but I feel I'm not doing enough, because Gintama really has helped me when I was rely low and there is so much more I want to talk about but I'm afraid of talking too much. Alot of people get into Gintama at one point or another. I started watching in 2008 when Yoshiwara In Flames was releasing in Japan. I had no friends and my only knowledge of friendship was being sexually abused. I was alone, and didn't know how to approach people. In high school I was still alone because I was awkward and socially inept. I kept making mistakes and being isolated just for existing. My first friend at 15 was 23 and was a frequent convention attendee. Through all of it, Gintama taught me the life lessons other people wouldn't. I saw the duality of humanity through these characters. I felt the rage of loss that Takasugi felt. I felt the empowerment to be better through Gintoki's strife. Even if I ended up babysitting a bunch of drunk 23-30 y/o's. Even if there is nothing left today, you never know what tomorrow will hold. Gintoki was the friend I always wanted but never had. I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for Gintama. I can't thank Sorachi enough for the world and characters he gifted us with.

I think it is because we are used to dividing the series by styles. Gintama is unique in the sense that we are not following a series with a defined type of style but rather the life of a person and his friends, with the good moments and the bad moments, the ups and downs of life, just trying to be a better person. Whenever someone asks me what I love so much about Gintama (usually those who haven't watched or read it), I always say that it's probably because it's the most sincere and genuine manga/anime that I've seen. I've seen a lot of series with super hype and well-written moments - from comedic to action-packed scenes and everything in between, but for Gintama, I never felt that Sorachi was doing it 'for clout', shock value, to be popular among readers, or to get a specific reaction (I can't find better words im so sorry lol but I hope I got the point across). With so many edgy and controversial scenes and lines throughout the series, I was convinced that Sorachi just write whatever the hell he wants to write. I never found myself saying "that's too cheesy", "oh he's a plot device", etc. He gave the characters so much soul that whatever situation you put them in, I have no choice but to care for them. There maybe some that I'm less fond of, but it's the only series wherein I don't have a character that I hate. Even towards the end with many people doubting his capability of ending the series on a high note, I just trusted the man because I've always felt the sincerity in his writing. I'm just glad that he was able to end the series on his own terms, and he did so wonderfully.

Thank you for this video. I never doubted it would happen once you got into it. Gintama has a lot of heart to it and it takes you by surprise and you never realize when you got hooked. It shows you humanity at its best and at its worst, but it's never preachy. It just tells you that you have to face your pain and your struggles to see the better days. Life is never going to be easy or spare you, but it will also give you joys and sunny days and ppl who love you if you just keep your heart open. Kindness is never a weakness. Be kind and brave, allow yourself to fail, love with all you've got and never give up. Gintama taught me a lot of things, but most of all it taught me that it's alright to be who you are. If you are true to yourself you can accomplish anything.

I could never truly explain why Gitama is my favourite anime of all time, maybe it was because every day at night while eating dinner it would make me cry from laughter concluding an otherwise shitty day on a happy note, or because I genuinely love comedy and the show just struck the right cord. It could have been because my favourite youtuber sang the shows praise and i just wanted to like it or maybe it was because I've nvere related to a character as much as i do Gintoki. Honestly it's like you said these characters sorachi-sensei created feel like family when they were happy i was too when they were in pain so was i. Still i cant tell you when i fell in love with the show. One Piece, easy, Attack on Titan, simple, Your Lie in April, no problem, but this show i cant even properly say why its my favourite.

I've never cried when watching an anime (I have a weird relationship with tears) but when I finished the manga I have an entire mess. Gintama came to my life at a time where I needed something and when it was over even tho I was crying horribly I knew at the end everything was alright and that I was lucky to have enjoyed it so much. Anyways now I have a silver soul tattoo to commemorate the thing that literally gave me the strength to not give it all up. Great analysis!

I've always watch anime for fun.. never have I thought to be this attached to Gintama.. I feel sad everytime I listen to "I wanna be" coz it reminds me of the opening and the whole story of Gintama.. I cry, I laugh, I shout, I mad throughout the show.. Gintama will always be my number one anime.. Sakata Gintoki is truly a masterpiece character.. he has many weakness but a lot more strength.. he has normal lives but he's ready to risk it for the sake of his friends.. I don't think I will ever simp for any character as much as I simp for gintoki.. sorachi really knows how to make best and powerful quotes and deliver it through gintoki's character.. I've such a mad respect for him.. Thanks for including that last quote.. I was waiting for that

I remember two years ago back in 10th grade when I first watched Gintama. I found it a bit boring and dropped it. I began to read the manga and started to slowly fall in love with it. I gave the anime another chance and never stopped. I fell in love with all the characters. I saw a lot of myself in characters like Gintoki, Shinpachi, Sougo and more. The anime had really funny moments(Popularity Poll arc),the action-packed moments(SA Arc)and the really sad ones(Mitsuba arc). When I was approaching my high school graduation and feeling anxious, watching Gintama made me feel at ease. It taught me that I can still be fun, childish and kind-hearted as an 18 year old teenager. Gintama has shaped my high school/teenage years and has easily become one of my favorite anime/manga of all time.

The reason why I love anime is it always makes me wonder and take a deeper look at the characters. In anime world there are no villains or heroes, only humans and history. Directions and choices. Pain and dispair. Love and hatred. Life is life in anime, it's something people no longer try to experience.

As someone who watched Gintama completely blind and expected it to by only comedy I can say that the serious tone near the end gave me the feeling of fear that Gintama will never be the same again, that Gintama won't go back to the way it was before but at ths same time the serious arcs hit harder for me because I didint expect them to be this good on a show mostly comedy *spoiler don't read more if you haven't watched it or finished it* Shogun assassination arc is probably the arc that started me to feel this way, with the addition of Shogun getting assassinated, the stakes get higher as I realize that another beloved character might die aswell On a comepletly diffirent note, only seeing clips of Gintama serious or comedy, even with context is still a down grade on experience I don't think I pulled off that sentence well so I'll give you an example That scene where shinpachi is seemingly forgiving the cat girl for robbing him but then suddenly knock her down for comedic effect Now this scene is funny in it as it's self but when you take into consideration the type of person shinpachi normally is and how most Gintama episodes forgives the villain at the end The scene where he suddenly comically knocked her down is alot more unexpected when you take those into consideration

I cried while watching this. This anime is more than just an anime. I love the characters and the stories so much. I've been so upset that it has ended, especially after I saw Takatin (Hey! Hey! Takatin hey!) in this video, it just made me even sadder. You're right about the short comedy episodes. It became even more precious now after I have watched all the episodes. I love Gin-san so much, I admire him so much. I really want to thank you Gorilla-sensei for making Gintama, I wanted to be as good as him in writing stories and characters. I was just thinking how I feel like I never see Gintama analysis videos here. I think the comedy arcs are definitely just as important as all the serious moments, if not more so, like you said. Gintama is really just one big found family, one with weird cousins, uncles, aunts, step-siblings, etc. I think if someone was to only watch the serious arcs it would be akin to knowing a family's history without really knowing, well, the family. I think Gintama made me realize the importance of getting people to laugh with your characters before throwing them into trouble; if I've laughed with someone it's all the more painful when I see them in pain. You tackled those subjects really well!

Thank you so much for making this video. I have watched it many times and it still makes me cry. That's how special Gintama's soul and heart are to me. The theme of "hope vs. despair" is really nothing new in anime, especially shonen. Gintama accomplished to deliver the message in such a great and heartwarming way because Gintoki knows what despair is. The hero and the villain share the exact same pain and struggle with it. It is so rare, compelling and relatable. Also, unlike many shonen protagonists, Gintoki isn't an idealistic dreamer who preaches peace and love. He isn't a symbol of hope everyone idolizes. Gintoki is a man who went through crap, but instead of feeling sorry for himself, he chooses to treasure what he still has and can gain. To me, that's a true inspiration. I only got to know Gintama a little over a year ago. Now, I wish I had found it earlier. Watching its hilarious craziness, great action and fantastic drama lifted my spirits at times of self-conflict. I don't think I have ever seen an anime that can have funny, exciting, heartfelt and tearjerking moments all equally powerful. Gorilla-sensei is one of the best mangaka ever for this storytelling and characters. Whenever I'm feeling like nothing will get better, I tell myself "Night is darkest before dawn". Because of Gintama, I'll keep going forward so I can see my brightest dawn.

Just finished watching all of Gintama, and I can say it's truly a series that encapsulates everything about life. The episode that personally hooked me in was when Takasugi and Gengai were introduced. It was apparent that many characters introduced would be linked by a strong sentimental thread that affects them one way or another in the present, and thus was very likely going to be an important recurring theme of the series.

One of my favourite characters is Kondo and I think he’s one of the best examples of how Gintama’s storytelling works with both serious and comedy moments. A lot of early Gintama is pure comedy and The impression you’d get of Kondo is that he seems like an idiotic stalker mainly used as a gag character and you’d also probably think that he was a false figurehead of the shinsengumi with Hijikata acting as the real leader, Thad be true in a lot of other shounen, he’d be a joke character that accomplishes nothing but as Gintama goes on you realise how he, like many other characters, isn’t defined by his faults, I think two of the best early examples of this are the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc and the Mitsuba Arc where you really learn who Kondo is as a person and why the shinsengumi follow him and of course later you’d see what he’s fully capable of as both a person and a samurai later down the line. He’s a funny stalker gorilla but he’s also a kind hearted leader who thinks of everyone he cares about first and would put his life down for the things he cares about.

Just recently finished watching trough the whole anime, i've finished the manga already, so going trough the arcs again in the anime, both the happy and sad feels hit so much harder the 2nd time when you have the full context of gintoki's Life. One big example was the Obi Wan Arc, watching gintoki si everything he can, even begging for help, so he can sabe obi wan and prevent shinpachi from a loss and burden similar to his, the desperation of Kagura as she watches her second family seemingly falling apart, it was really effective in the manga as by that point you already know that the yorozuya love each other and stand with each other, but watching it with full context and understanding everything, it was waaay more painful. Love this series, and I specially love the main trio, they have a great dinamic, both comedic and dramatic, and you can really see and understand how much pattsan and Kagura really brought the best out of Gintoki, to the point of having gintoki worry about dissapointing them and trying his best for them

I am in love with gintama... and in love with that last phrase.. it really makes me emotional and hopes... what if sorachi trying to tell as by the story is " people are much freer than what they think they are" as what Yoshida shouyo said when I think about it... a man with a very sad past, working with his friend as odd jobs, at a world full of harsh rules, fighting to live their own rules... yes... I think living life with your rules is really hard... but it feels much freer than living it with other's rules... you made a nice video describing Gintama with the most expressive words.. thank you
@dccalling59603 жыл бұрын
Gintama to me is very clearly a war allegory. Even the extra content--such as the second movie, which Sorachi wrote--is about Gintoki dealing with the fallout of his own trauma. Gintoki is the positive example of this, healing and recovering through his relationships with others. Takasugi is the negative of this, lashing out in anger at everyone and never letting anyone get close. I've also always thought of Sakamoto, Katsura, and Takasugi as foils to Gin. Sakamoto represents his sense of irrepresibility, his unconvenionality. Katsura has a very strict sense of honor and duty, and in his own way, so does Gin, in the sense that he will protect everything "in his country," which he says is "anything within the reach of his sword." Takasugi and Gin share a love of their sensei, and a sense of ruthlessness which Gin works the whole series to leave behind. All three of Shoyo's students love and respect him, but as you say it's Gin in particular who loved not just the man but the world he wanted to create. Spoilers: At the end of the series, Gin is forced to confront the worst moment of his life--Shoyo's execution--over and over again. Utsuro bears Shoyo's face, and even tells him that if he "continues to defy heaven, he would be forced to kill his master over and over again." It operates almost like trauma therapy, revisiting the moment of trauma again and again to acknowledge the event, accept it, and ultimately recover. It just works.

It seems to me that the strength he has to protect this light, was brought about by the darkness that he shined the light of consciousness on. As if he incorperated his dark tragic nature, for the greater the tragedy, the more it can be refined into beauty. Gintoki found acceptence and tries to live a fufilling human life, after accepthing the ultimate change which is death, in the conviction that beauty is eternal and passed along, as the sensei created a guiding light which led to his beautiful conviction. A conviction that seems to me to be; enduring tragedy until one collapses should lead to the most beautiful outcome. "The night is the darkest before dawn," as said in the show. As i see it, Takasugi fell into nihilism because he couldn´t accept the tragedy, perhaps there wasn´t a profound beauty within, or any value to protect something other than his guiding light of his sensei, as if he had not found his own sun within, covered in the clouds; the eternally beautiful home of this soul you speak of, which made Gintoki strong enough to cope with the harsh reality of the world.
