Lead singer Jari Maenpaa is the mastermind of the band. Formed in 2003 as a side project when he was still in Ensiferum, parted from them and focused on Wintersun due to scheduling conflicts between the 2 bands. You have seen drummer Kai Hahto and bassist Jukka Koskinen before, they are both in Nightwish now. Lead guitarist Teemu Mantysari is now in Megadeth. Jari is the songwriter and composer, yep he does take quite a bit of time to get everything together, recording started on this album in 2006, but wasn't finished and released until 2012. Only 3 albums to date, 7 years since the last album and 12 since this record, Time I. The 4th album, Time II, is finally scheduled for release later this year. He also has diminished lung capacity, he contracted TB during his compulsory military service and, as a result , lost part of 1 lung. There's a lot more tracks in this song than 200. It goes well beyond 1000 tracks actually. In a demonstration video he tells that there's over 1600 tracks in the song at that point. The crazy thing is that Jari now has told that he failed with the album "Time I" because he couldn't achieve the sound he envisioned and he had to put out the album at some point. That was in 2012 and in 2017 he released a remastered version "Time I 1.5" which is an improvement but now, in August 30th this year he'll finally release Time II and alongside that there's a completely new mix and master of Time I -album (Time I 2.0) and now it finally sound how it was always meant to be and indeed it's a massive improvement. Last year he was able to get the right sound for the Time II -album (thanks to a new studio and plug-in technology) and mixed and mastered the Time I -album again so it has the same incredible sound as Time II. August 30th will be a truly epic day for Wintersun fans

I don't think Jari said that just this particular song has so many tracks, but he was speaking about the entire Time I album that has over 1600 audio tracks. If you think that I'm wron, please link me with that demonstration video.

31:00 for that massive chorus part Jari actually summoned an ensemble of metal vocalists to form a choir so there's like 10 dudes singing that part, but of course there's layers upon layers over there too. I loved your reaction and I'm looking forward to more :)

I'm so glad that you got to see/hear this. Clearly you can appreciate this so much more than the average reactor and that made it super enjoyable for me. I probably had to listen to it 10 times before catching all that you were hearing but our ears do develop with practice. I think you would enjoy Time from this same recording. It is probably my favourite of Wintersun's pieces.

Considering he does almost everything himself, except composes and plays the drums, he must almost be quite impressive audio engineer indeed. And, well, if you routinely spend 7+ years per album mixing and polishing you pretty much have to be able to do it yourself. No one would have budget to pay per hour for that 😀.

Loved this fantastic reaction to one of my favorite bands. Right up there with Nightwish and Epica. Loved how you got to geek out over the fantastic production as well as the music. This song especially feels like the soundtrack to an epic Nordic saga. The final section take me to rowing my Viking long boat on an epic quest and then I am astride my horse charging across a snow covered battlefield to slay some dark evil force. Next would be one of my favorite Wintersun songs, Time, from the same Sonic Pump Studios performance. The you should follow up with the song Loneliness (Winter) from their Forest Seasons album. The lyric video is the way to go and is hauntingly beautiful. Song was written by Jari after the passing of his father. As some one who grew up in a wintery climate (northern Vermont) the song perfectly captures the isolation and desolation that winter can feel like which is a great metaphor for the isolation we can feel when someone close to us passes. I would then recommend you checkout Jari's earlier work with Enisferum. Wintersun's songs are insanely dense. I feel like this one song has more ideas and melodies than most bands put out in their entire lifespan. I always get the feeling of "ooo, piece of candy! ooo, piece of candy! ooo, piece of candy!" everytime I listen to Wintersun. And I've listened to them quite a lot.

Jari has recently announced that he has created a completely new mix for this album, calling it TIME I 2.0. It will be released together with the TIME II album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKObYZl-f7mtadE It is not just a remaster. He has actually gone through all those tracks again to create a completely new mix, because he now he has more CPU power, better audio plugins, an improved listening situation in his "semi-studio" and more experience in mixing and mastering. It's mind blowing and the audio examples we heard so far are incredible.

Some of the cymbal hits aren't really audible. A drummrer reactor said that it's probably Kai's choice of cymbals, which would get messed when hit fast in repetition and they had to be hidden in the mix. That's how I understood his explanation. There are multiple tracks for all parts/vocals/instruments/synths…Wintersun uses a LOT of tracks (far more than most bands) to layer everything🙂, so that is what I am referring to, not just the fact that the synth tracks are back tracks for the recording/rehearsal. Glad you enjoyed!

And ginx I have to point out some things you said to your reaction to sons of winter and stars. Number 1 did I or did I not tell you would be geeking out? Some would say you were even having eargasms! Number 2 you mentioned in the song a verse that they sung that made you think of a pirate ship. Let me correct you there . Wintersun is labeled as a symphonic metal band like there sister bands nightwish and epica. But technically they are a symptom viking metal band mainly because the use a lot of viking themes in their music such as sons of winter. So from now on instead of thinking of a pirate ship think viking ship. Number 3 go ahead and react next in order wintersun time live rehearsal video at Sonic pump studios in Helsinki Finland. Then wintersun land of snow and sorrow live rehearsal video to continue your wintersun rabbit hole. And a very detailed analysis but I wish you could have went into more detail on the equipment they were using such as the mixer or computer the drummer was using and by the way you didn't notice he was the only one with head phones ? That's because he was playing to a click track. I learned that from tank the techs reaction to sons of winter and stars which again ginx please watch his reaction so you can learn more. And if you want to know the lyrics to sons of winter since it's time consuming for you you can watch on your own time so you can move on to the next suggestion wintersun time video.
