This Fanciulla excerpt is a gem--- so beautiful. And Giorgio Tozzi-- my teacher-- sings this so beautifully.

Wonderful! I had the pleasure of singing with him in the 71/72 Tristan in San Francisco ... Chicago boy George Tozzi !!!

Giorgio was nearly unable to do this role. He found such a connection with the text that he would break down while working on it. He used this as an example of how an artist must not allow feeling to interfere with communication.

One of the ten most beautiful moments in all opera.

Thank you for this! I am so thrilled to have just found a rare 1958 recording (LP) of Giorgio in "The Desert Song"! You can not imagine how wonderfully romantic he is as The Red Shadow!! Once I get the digital conversion done, I will try to learn how to post audio clips here -- maybe some folks would enjoy it as I do! :-)

I've loved this since I was a kid, some 60 years ago The problem is that it's ruined for me all the Jake Wallaces I've heard since. It's so perfect in every way. Gorgeous, sumptuous voice, perfect musicality and deeply emotional.

@Agorante Giorgio's teacher, Rosa Raisa, was the first Turandot - her husband, Giacomo Rimini, the first Ping. Perhaps Giorgio's connection to Puccini is not a coincidence.

I would practically sell my soul for "The Student Prince" recording. Thanks to Sirenadellopera I got some of the wonderful "Desert Song" uploaded. My Boris is Boris Christoff, who I also adore, but the warmth of Tozzi is beyond belief. Happy tears all around. Thanks for commenting, Billy and all.

@Mawrdew I envy you. Would love to have met him. I played this part of the opera so many times it is almost worn out.

Puccini didn't write much for the bass voice - Colline's "Vecchia Zimarra", Timur's death of Liu, and this. As it happens the best recorded versions of all three are by Tozzi. Must be a coincidence.
