It is interesting to me that people say his voice was small-median size. An instructor at my school, Dr. Barbara Caprilli, who sang with Mr. Zancanaro, mentioned to me that he had a large voice in his prime. It wasn't gargantuan, like some of the baritones that were around, but that hardly makes it small, especially when you consider how large most voices are (not very). He is not a large man, so having a voice that is so rich and full is quite impressive. He may not have the weight that some singers can achieve, but I prefer this sound, honestly. His instrument is SO beautiful, and he is so lyrical and musical, on top of being a fantastic actor and interpreter of opera. He is, in my humble opinion, what every baritone should strive to be.

I heard him often - he didnt have quite the magnitude of Cappuccilli but it definitely wasnt small and carried very well with a lot of "ping". When I think back I must admit that one took him way too for granted - myself included.

Do you happen to know who his teacher was?
@acacia-bloom10 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. Whoever he was he must have been very good because Zancanarro sang with that same 'Bastianini Italian sound'. The voice was seamless and totally even from top to bottom.

OMG I could not phrase it better. One of my teachers sang with him and told me that his voice was not big, but that people did not care, since his elegance and style were unprecedented. I wish some large voices took a step back and focused more with lyricism and intention. Orchestras can always tone it down a bit and audiences won't even notice it.

For me, as a baritone Zancanaro is the master. His technique and linguistic clarity are second to no one. It's like a singing lesson, listening to him sing. And his clean, manly voice is superb. A truly great singer. The best of his generation.

Aragon -I was there !!-One strange occurrence was at the beginning of the second act. The conductor was not happy with something or other. The performance was being recorded for BBC TV. After 3 minutes everything stopped. Andrea Chenier ,Placido Domingo looked very confused sitting on his chair , as the curtain went down. The act restarted a couple of minutes later. By the way that's my BRAVO !! at the end of Gerard's " Nemico della patria" The best I have ever heard. And that includes hearing Gino Bechi in the famous 1943 Gigli recording , under the supervision of Umberto Giordano himself. Even better than Ettore Bastianini and Piero Capucilli.

To know really how a voice is, one has to hear it in the theater. This recording is MAGNIFICENT, indeed. But I heard Zancanaro in Viena many times and his voice was beautiful but of small-median size and quite lyric. He didn't have the impact I am hearing in this recording. However, his diction, excitement, line, color, etc. are superb.

This particular moment in Zancanaro's career is incredible! What a glorious sound, a spot on technique, and a killer stage presence! Those F#'s in "io" and "morte" are stellar sounds that we don't hear much these days. He has a beautiful balance of roundness and forward resonance placement, narrows (covers) in the passagio, and the energy in his breath flow informs every bit of it. You can hear how that sound cuts through through the house! Gorgeous!

Oh, I do wish we'd stop commenting on AfroPoli's description (which I happen to agree with) and focus on the clip instead. Giorgio Zancanaro is a great and unique artist. I marvel at how he characterizes the shifting emphasis of the scene, and his singing is magnificent. Carlo Gérard is one of those roles in which he was operating in a class-of-his-own airspace--Luna, Renato and Posa being some of the others. There is no one remotely like him on the stage today.

Thanks for the info on the real size of his voice (or lack thereof). I noticed it even in this video when the orchestra is playing full force (2:45-3:15 mark), as his voice cannot cut through it as well as the giants of the 60's and 70's. But he certainly was a superb baritone, and his voice sounds richer and more beautiful here than in almost any other recording I have heard.

There are people who absolutely love him, as you can tell by the comments. For people who has heard the true baritones of the near passed, he is just a good singer. For me, He was a short tenor with a beautiful center. Like Thomas Hampson and so many others.
