There are 4 juke joints left in the United States. On May 4, 2013, the last one in Alabama was raided and shut down. But Henry "Gip" Gipson, proprietor of Gip's Place, a gravedigger by day and hard drinking bluesman by night, had no intention of going down without a fight.
Directed by Patrick Sheehan
Produced by Melanie Jeffcoat
Awards:
Best Documentary Feature and Best Alabama Film at Sidewalk Film Festival
Best Music Documentary at Indie Memphis Film Festival
Henry “Gip” Gipson passed away on October 8th, 2019.

We sat in his kitchen once and played guitars. After the tune, he said, “You got some jazz in your blues, huh.” I said, “Yeah, I do.” He said, “Yeah, we gonna wash that out.” ‘Great man.

I was a small, miniscule part of his life in 2009 >10. I will cherish that experience for the rest of my time here on this little blue rock. I have photos, an autographed guitar and memories that are the most real, the most surreal and one of the greatest experiences I have ever had in all my years of live music. Miss you, Mr. Gip.

I had a comment with the truth, but of course it can't be up due to "hate speech" and "community standards". But you know what white people/colonizer has done in America, and if you don't research. IT was bad, r@p in g childr en and more. So we should not sit at a table or dance together until reparations are made to black people. I am no c00n
@godjhaka7376
@godjhaka7376 4 ай бұрын
not to mention wypipo/colonizer pushing a fake european standard of beauty when in reality black people are genetically superior according to science. It's all messed up, mental abuse given to blacks. White people concanstly flooding or burning black towns down in hate like Tulsa/Black wallstreet, strealing the land back. No we should not be together, that's like the deer laying with the lion.

So clean, so innocent, so real. America, especially, black America need to return here to reconnect with your roots and restore the faith that saw you through your sojourn in this great land.. That life fulfilled and matured is this good simple man and grave digger by day, worshipper by night. Is Gip. He does not concern himself with high and lofty ideals, but his conversations with his God daily sets him apart.He has life and more abundantly, so pure, so innocent, so true. God bless you, Gip. Watching and totally touched by this gentleman's story from Fiji. Awesome! Amazing. Beautiful. A timely poignant reminder of why America was great and can be again.

This reminds me of my American Experience. Land of the free. Especially when you're walking in Gip's shoes. Just imagine a young man was there in 1952 and most likely it was sparsely populated. By 2013 this old man has spent 61 years there. That's must be like going to jail or having your freedom taken away. Makes one feel like "I haven't broken the law, they made one just for me". That's the American Experience. Bessemer in 1952 is not the same as 2013. I can feel this man's pain. It's like a death in the family. If Gip is still there I'd like to visit him. Gip you are a living testimony of the true South as it changed and grew. You are a portrait of history and culture an original. I gotta check out your collection on the wall and sit in the yard and reminisce. You was doing that before I was born.

There wasn't nothing wrong with these folks getting together. I grew up around folks like this and my mama's second husband used to dig graves too. We'd cook a hog every year or have a fish fry. People would show up and play music like this. What this was really about was the government wasn't getting thier piece of the pie ( $$$ ). Look at Atlanta nowdays. All these Rappers get away with putting thier foul mouth music on the radio, but see that's okay because the government is getting a piece of that pie. What makes me mad about that is those rappers are gang bangers. They bring in the illegal drugs, illegal guns, stealing cars, running prostitution rings and human trafficking and the government turn thier heads when it comes to them. It ain't right. It's all about money, not disturbing the peace. Politicians always lie.
