My husband Robert Ferris started Giraffe with Kevin Gilbert. The name giraffe was a combination of Robert's initials RAF and Kevin's first two letters of his last name GI which put together is GIRAF. Robert and Kevin wrote a couple songs together and then Kevin ended up going on with Giraffe with other players. Robert also worked with Kevin on some movie and TV soundtracks and other projects. Robert co-wrote 2 of the songs on Giraffe's first album "The Power of Suggestion". The songs are "This Warm Night" and "The World Just Gets Smaller." There is a clip of the one of these songs on the website: kevingilbert.com/discography/giraffe/the-power-of-suggestion/ Robert released his own album about a few years ago that was available on Amazon, under the band name "The Trod" which you can see here: www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002UXRA2Q/ref=dp_olp_used_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=used. If anyone would like to buy Robert's album, you can reach out to me at winter642@gmail.com.

You both should check out Giraffe's cover of Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" live during ProgFest '94. It was freaking awesome!!! It's on KZbin. Fun Fact: The video was sent to Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford shortly afterwards. Around the same time, Phil Collins decided to leave Genesis to focus on his solo career. When Tony and Mike were auditioning new drummer and singer, they watched the tape and invited both Kevin Gilbert and Nick Di'Virgilio as the new replacements. Sadly, Kevin died before accepting the offer, but Nick got the drummer gig with them. He was featured on their next album, "Calling All Stations" and the tour to follow. The album was...okay, but the American part of the tour was a failure. They dropped Nick from the lineup after cancelling the rest of the tour. Nick later joined Spock's Beard and Big Big Train. Giraffe's Keyboard player is Dave Kerzner, CEO and Founder of Sonic Reality. He later helped out in building some of the largest sound sample libraries in the world, including the vintage equipment sounds used by Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP and more. He joined a fairly new prog rock band "Sound of Contact" co-founded by Simon Collins, son of Phil.

" they watched the tape and invited both Kevin Gilbert and Nick Di'Virgilio as the new replacements. " eh? Kevin was allegedly offered an Audition by the manager from Genesis.

Calling all stations is underrated in my opinion. A second album with Ray Wilson could've been even better!

If you liked this song or just want to check out the lead singer's other projects, these are also on KZbin: Giraffe - The Power of Suggestion (their first album) Giraffe - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Live (Genesis tribute) Toy Matinee (pop-rock) Thud (Kevin's solo album, pop-rock/prog) The Shaming of the True (prog rock opera)

I am friends with 3 of the members of Giraffe..and a fellow musician. Kevin Gilbert, the lead of the group died back in 1996 at age 29 in a freak accident, and was the boyfriend of, and the guy who co-wrote Cheryl Crow's first album. The drummer, Scotty Smith is awesome, and played on my albums (Kevin used to listen in), bassist Chris Beveridge is awesome, and guitarist Stan Cotey. Giraffe had 2 albums.. first one was called "Giraffe"... the song you play here is from the second album. Kevin formed the group Toy Matinee after giraffe... and a group called Thud... we are all SF Bay Area folks...cheers.

Guys, thank you for this. KG is someone who carried a few of us through our early 20s... and made life bearable. I've met countless friends through KG connections and they have become cherished, loyal friends. While Kevin left us way too soon, it's great that his fellow muso friends are all still out there doing amazing things. Nice guys all around.

Welcome to the world of Kevin Gilbert fandom. His music lives on in our hearts. Watching someone listen to him and Giraffe for the first time brings me back to the first time I heard Toy Matinee and every song he's ever done after and before. Every song of Kevin's twists and turns and makes us all think and enjoy the ride. So grateful you guys did this! Listen to all there is. Your life will be better for it. RIP KG forever.

Glad to see you back on air, boys! ... Kevin Gilbert was on the short list to replace Phil Collins after he left Genesis. He was quite a talent; check out 'LAST TRAIN HOME' from Toy Matinee if you really need more evidence. Lastly, his album 'THE SHAMING OF THE TRUE' is great great GREAT.

I discovered Giraffe back in 2014 i think. I heard the track 'all fall down' and at first i thought it was a level 42 song that i hadn't heard before. I've been a fan of Giraffe ever since!

Good to see the team has been reassembled for a new mission: Code name Giraffe. Good luck men, and may God be with you (for the crossing is cold, deep and wide). Talk about six degrees of separation (Google it). Kevin Gilbert not Kevin Bacon:). Just last week on your JP channel, a fellow Spock’s 🧔 fan suggested I listen to ‘The Great Nothing’ song from their “V” album. It turned out that the song was a tribute to Neal Morse’s friend Kevin Gilbert, whom I had never heard of. I wiki’ed KG and discovered that his album “The Shaming of the True” is considered by many to be one of the best progressive records ever made. What? Why haven’t I heard this before? And...and SB’s drummer, Nick D’Virgilio (now Big Big Train’s) played drums with KG. (And remastered the Shaming album after KG’s untimely death). Plus, and here’s the freaky part: KG, NV...and Big Big Train’s singer...all auditioned to replace Phil Collins when Genesis recorded their last album. I plan on listening to “The Shaming of the True” (how could I not). I suppose there is a cosmic reason I’ve become such a big fan of Spock’s Beard (and Big Big Train’s). The Shrew...er, True awaits. (Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew...goggle it) Ps, Bill Bruford has got to be involved in this 6 degree story somewhere...Yes! BB with Genesis! Google it.

Cathy Wood : Be warned, The Shaming of the True is not for everyone. Like Lamb Lies, it veers wildly between hauntingly beautiful and wickedly bizarre. Best songs: Certifiable #1 Hit Smash//Suit Fuge//Fun. It’s a well constructed concept album.

Woody n’ Sidecar Dog Sounds like I could find something to like on it. I never thought The Lamb was bizarre (except for some of the lyrics).

There were two Giraffe albums (this is the better of the two). Kevin (and his bandmates) was deep in his Tears For Fears phase in the late 80s (which made sense since that stuff was uber hot at the time.) He was also a huge Peter Gabriel fan, which pops up in some of the rhythmic ideas. But be careful about opening the door on Kevin Gilbert. As you've probably seen from the comments below he had a complicated history. Kevin's music is pretty much universally rewarding, but for a guy who's been gone now for 25 years the level of adoration that continues to follow him is... well, it's unusual. Giraffe -> Toy Matinee -> Kevin Solo... It's all worth checking out.
@celestialelixir39952 ай бұрын
Both albums are good. Power of suggestion has a very 80s pop, Trevor horn vibe. The view from here is a maturer record I'd say.

Here's a music and a non-music question for you - have you ever seen an opera live? If so, which? And if you could go forward to any point in your life and ask yourself three questions, what how far forward would you go, and what would you ask?

Good to see you two doing your thing again. Entertaining as always. This song i wasn't getting a prog vibe, sounded more straight forward for me. It was a good song but not a great song, 3.2 rating. I liked some of the bass lines and the guitar and vocals were good. Wasn't sure if Manny was serious or joking around PC ----->Journey--->Steve Perry lead singer of Journey---->I will Survive----> EW&F? That was a crazy sequence LMAO.

Giraffe? Wow, a prog band beginning with G that I missed out on. And...nice late night sounding intro. Definitely 80’s sounding, is that correct? Nice bass and drum interaction. Vocal is very strong and probably more accessible than someone like Derek Shulman of Gentle Giant. Not a progressive tune and not something I would pursue yet good to hear. You are pretty right on about your Phil Collins characterization of the vocalist. Thanks again for another sweet video. Lincoln Park?
