I think its safe to say this is a regular occurrence in Spike Lee movies half way through you end up wondering what the story is about. His plots often times becomes too convoluted.

For sure! You can tell when he inserts random things that he wants to discuss even though they don't go well with the theme or tone of the film.

This was Spike Lee’s worst movie & the best thing about this movie was the Prince songs. Theresa Randle should have had a bigger career.

I just watched this movie about an hour ago and your analysis is exactly how I felt while watching it. To me it was all over the place, I really thought it would have went another direction. Theresa Randall is extremely beautiful and I would have loved to see more of her and her relationship with the other call girls play out, I really liked that dynamic. But, it just fell flat for some reason like I hate the weird tidbits of things thrown into the movie that didn’t make sense or go with the plot. I also hated how she was shamed for what she did And it’s like OK yeah we get it, you love Prince but did the whole entire soundtrack have to be a Prince song?! Spike Lee does entirely too much. It seems like all of his movies are like this. Don’t give me started on she’s gotta have it and she hate me 🙄🙄
@imanithefilmophile
@imanithefilmophile 3 жыл бұрын
YESSSS this is exactly it! I wanted to see Theresa's character and the other women's stories and see how they bond because of their unique job. Spike Lee does this a lot but I think it's because he likes to implement all his thoughts and opinions despite it convoluting the story. He's still an amazing director though but this movie is far from his best work. I also need to watch She Hate Me because I hear it's probably his worst film.

Yeah I think that's the problem with spike lee movies sometimes he takes his story's line all over the place and it's confusing I wish he would just keep it simple,do the right thing jungle fever and clockers is my favs by him the story's get straight to the point!

1:15 this makes me wonder what the limit of cameos are? Can it get out of hand? #ComingToAmerica2 went all out with this approach. I think they definitely wanted to make sure the movie had other appeals if the story itself was a critical flop.

@@marchie2 Yeah I felt bad for them too. I especially love this part of the movie because that subject has a lot of nuance. On one hand, it's Sals restaurant so he can put whoever he wants on his wall. On the other hand, history has shown that a lot of the times when non-black owned businesses reside in black neighborhoods, they don't even like black people. They just like the black dollar.

Clockers wasn't the only good Spike Lee movie, Crooklyn was good, Malcolm X was his best movie, in terms of production quality. He Got Game was a good movie, in terms of the story, even though the NBA player who played Jesus Shuttlesworth, could not act, to save his life. My main beef with Spike Lee movies, is the long ass movie credit intros. If you've ever seen clockers or Mo Better Blues, you know what I mean.

Its boring because its the equivalent to a slow burn but gives a more black feel to it that applies to black communities as far as chasing fame or just trying to get by in modern day society from a second person point of view relating to African americans in the acting/somewhat sex business basically explains the pros and cons of it for women and how you can let it kill your dignity while trying to have self morals and self-respect that can be embarrassing if confronted for a idol dream or opportunity. Btw spike lee didnt write this movie he just. Produced and directed it movie was written by suzan 😉 Iam 23 years of age right now and when i say young women living in poverty needs to see this movie it is a must it definitely is showing whats going on in black communities right now dealing with social media and professionalism

This movie wasn't the best but it was still pretty good. My feminist gf loves this film. The Woman protagonist isn't that great but at least Spike tried to write one with some depth even if he ultimately failed. More than can be said for Martin Scorsese or Copolla or any of the other Black directors at the time. This movie is stylish, funny, tongue in cheek and just overall a good time when watching with friends.
