A nine-year-old girl panicked after realizing her seat wasn’t buckled on a fair ride in Mobile, Alabama. In an interview with WKRG, a director for the Greater Gulf State Fair said the “primary safety device” was engaged, but the safety buckle was not. Ride operators will receive additional training following the incident.

Just so you know the seatbelt really isn’t necessary you can ride a rollercoaster that has the same type of restraint with the clicking system and go upside down on it because of the restraint each restraint has two fail safes and the seat belt is just to make riders feel more safe and comfortable it does absolutely nothing

For the uninitiated, the seat belt is not the only thing keeping a rider in the seat. The seat belt serves two purposes, 1. to be used as a measuring device to determine if the rider can safely fit in the seat, and 2. as a redundant safety mechanism in the extremely unlikely event that the main safety mechanism (most likely either a hydraulic or a ratcheting system) fails.
@Thatdamnsmith
@Thatdamnsmith Сағат бұрын
Redundancy than an engineer or process owner thought was required. Regardless should have been on no matter how unlikely the chances of failure. In the engineering world we call this a stupid operator that needs to be fired.
@thepuncakian2024
@thepuncakian2024 35 минут бұрын
@Thatdamnsmith (Most) over the shoulder restraints like this have their own redundancies and fail safes inside the mechanism itself. As a matter of fact their are several large roller coasters such as VelociCoaster at Universal and (most) B&M hyper coasters that don't have seat belts at all, just a lap bar, and there have been no deaths or injuries on any of them. The seat belt also helps make some guests feel safer, when in reality it is really not adding much extra safety. I get adding redundancies, makes perfect sense, but at a certain point it gets ridiculous and you're just getting diminishing returns.

happened to me once, it was a different ride that just went in fast circles, but I was 6 and my 4yo sister was next to me. once the ride started going, I noticed the bar that should've kept both of us from flinging off the ride wasn't actually locked in. I held down onto that bar for dear life so that my sister wouldn't get shot out off the seat. it was so terrifying.

No it’s not, this person was fine, the main restraint is held by extremely strong hydraulics and the seatbelt is to make you feel safe. Unfortunately when the seatbelt is forgotten, ignorant internet people with no clue about what they’re saying act like it’s unsafe when there are rides just like this without that redundancy because it DOES NOT MATTER AND DOES NOTHING TO MAKE THE RIDE SAFER.

I know, pretty awful of this mother to traumatize her kid over something so inconsequential isn't it? Those restraints are aircraft-grade hydraulic cylinders. For the restraints to fail, both of those cylinders would have to give out at the same time which is virtually impossible. Your chances of dying on the drive to or from the park are substantially higher than a restraint failure. If that were to happen, that shitty seat belt is not keeping anybody in. They're not meant to be a restraint, they're meant to make sure the rider isn't too fat to fit in the seat correctly.

this is a real problem. the workers won’t pay attention to real screaming or won’t stop the ride bc they just assume someone is scared and not actually in danger. when i was in 5th grade they let me on a ride that i was tall enough for but just way too skinny to ride. there was a lap bar but the sides were open. even at the lowest the lap bar was too high and so i started falling out but the guy next to me held onto me while we screamed for the employee to stop the ride but they never did. i owe that man my life for his kindness but we seriously need to fix this.

@@DrAngelKins yes but i was a very skinny kid and had no idea that i would have any issue in the ride as i had no prior issues on rides. the operator should at least attentive enough to check that children are safely secured in the ride. additionally they should always pay attention to the ride that is being operated so they are ready to stop the ride if necessary.

@@cementmixer13many times the operators on these rides can be as young as 16. I'm sure they try their best but they're not professionals and many of them are teenagers. They can only do so much tbh. Just coming from someone who used to work at a medium sized amusement park. They don't generally employ adults to do this because it doesn't pay an adult salary, so it's a little sad but we can't expect them to have our safety covered 100% of the time. This is why children should go on rides with their parents if they are particularly small so the parents can make sure they are safe- I would not put their safety solely in the hands of teenage minimum wage park employees
@TheCompdept

There's no problem. The workers are fine. The seat belts don't do a thing. Not one thing in the whole entire world, all the lights on the operator's console or green for go because the safety of restraint was in its proper position. The belt doesn't do squat. You should really do a little bit of research on it and you'll realize how pointless it is

When I was a little girl I went on one of those caged rides that goes upside down because I recently at that time became just tall enough, somehow my belt came undone while going upside down, I was lucky to be sitting next to a teenage boy because he noticed while the ride was going and placed his arm over me and held me down keeping me safe. I will never forget that moment and will be forever grateful to him and only hope he’s doing well in life. Edit: for those who read this comment the ride isn’t the zipper. It was yellow. Happened to my sister years ago, we were screaming begging the ride operator to stop, I remember repeating over and over that she wasn't latched in while I had moved to hold her in place. Other people were screaming too and we were ignored until the point where the ride tilted and he finally saw her actually falling out while I was holding her to keep her from hitting the ground {Luckily on this ride it would have only been maybe a five foot drop but I imagine she still would have gotten hurt had she taken the fall} The guy actually still let the ride finish since by the time he noticed it was almost over. He attempted to yell at us for messing around, but the other people on the ride screamed at him. Nothing ever really came of it that I know of, other than my sister to this day will only get on kiddie rides.

The ride doesn’t start unless all the restraints are locked. The “seatbelt” isn’t any form of restraint, it’s a measurement to prevent guests that are too large to safely ride the attraction from riding. Still scary asf if you don’t know that and see the belt unlocked, but the belt being buckled or not has nothing to do with the kids actual safety

Edit: to everyone saying the boy I mentioned was way overweight… so what. #1. Most teenagers make terrible mistakes that they hopefully live and learn through. #2. The operator had a job to do. @@mykdoug748 Yep. I don't recommend looking it up, but then again I can't really tell you what to do. My curiosity got the better of me but I wish it hadn't! For those who are curious but don't wanna see the video (if you don't wanna know at all, just don't read past this point): A teenage boy fell off a ride similar to the one in the video (or that exact ride, I'm not sure) and fell to his death. He was too large for the shoulder restraints to be pushed into secure position, but instead of telling him this and having him exit the ride, they just let him ride without the restraint all the way down. The ride went all the way up, and as it dropped back down, it stopped like 20 or 30 feet in the air and he slipped out. Someone outside the ride was recording and it shows just that: the ride dropping down and stopping, showing him slip out and fall. I can't remember if the camera person never pointed at the ground, or if they did, but the view was obscured, I just remember that you can't actually SEE his body hit the ground. But you can HEAR it. That is a sound I probably won't ever forget. If this video is in fact the sane ride in Orlando, then they really need to review employee training on ride safety or something. Because this can't keep happening. I think the boy and his loved ones would have much preferred he leave the ride a little embarrassed than be gone forever.

I was holding the arm brackets closed and hainging from them when upside-down pressing my feet on the floor to keep from coming loose Very lucky I didn't fall out. From my understanding the seatbelt is just to make the rider feel safe and is often not necessary and just a back up for a back up in case the first 2 back ups in the harness fail, which is very slim. It also serves as a visual aid for the person checking to determine if the person sitting in the seat can actually fit, example: the plus sized child who recently lost his life because he was too big for the ride and the harness didn’t latch, nobody checked him, and they didn’t do the buckle test. I say all this to say, though the seatbelt is often a 3rd back up, or a visual to see if someone fits, I’d still be screaming and losing my mind if I was both the child or the mother 😢.

Omg that must have been horrible 😢 Something similar happened to me when I was a teen. I went on a ride with my cousin. The restraints weren't individual ones. It was just one restraint for two people. This was a problem, because my cousin was very big and overweight and I was small and underweight. So the restraint secured her well, but not me. The people that worked there didn't pay attention, so I had to take the ride like that, without being held by a restraint. The ride was horrible. I was almost falling out. Thank God my adrenaline kicked in so that I had enough strength to hold at the restraint and not fall out. My hands and arms were hurting after the ride. He didn’t like rides, but wanted to joined, so I comforted him the whole time while the ride started to move. Once the ride started to speed up, I noticed I started to slip out over the bar, and I’m 5’2 and weigh lighter than him: more than half my body was flinging in the air and I held onto him for dear life. First time I screamed in genuine fear, and the ride had no seat belts.

Your husband was not a hero lol these seat belts are not designed to be restraints. They're designed to ensure the rider physically fits in the seat. Unless your daughter is a 400lb whale, they didn't need to use the seat belt to verify she fit because they could tell just by visual inspection. The restraints close under the power of dual hydraulic cylinders. That seat belt is about as useful of a restraint as a used Kleenex

This also happened to me! Was on a choir trip and got on the drop ride, Scream at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. I can be shy in large groups, especially in high school, and it was hard to speak up but I knew I had to. The bottom of the shoulder safety restraints went over twice as high as everyone else’s, about to my neck. I was a veteran of the Dungeon Drop at Six Flags Astroworld at the time, so I was familiar enough to know something wasn’t working the way it should. I patted the leg of the girl next to me and said that this isn’t right, as I raised it to show how high it went. She freaked out and started screaming to stop, and then the other 2 people on our row did too. About a quarter of the way up the guy noticed and was annoyed at first but once he shielded his face from the sun and actually saw, he gasped and I could just tell by his overall reaction that it wasn’t good. He nodded his head as he darted to bring it back down. I am still shy sometimes but I definitely speak out when safety or other basic needs are at risk.

Even if the belt is just a extra safety thing it should ALWAYS be checked and if you are unsure of where you started go another lap and check it twice. Safety always goes first no excuses!! Sounds like what happened to your cousin wasn't the same thing at all. Those seat belts don't do squat to hold you in place. It's the shoulder harness that does all the work. If the kid was coming out of the chair then it was because he chose to get on a ride. He's too small for and probably faked his height or size or a moronic employee allowed him on when he was too small. But that seat belt wouldn't be the reason whatsoever. It doesn't do anything. When I was ten, me and my brother (12) were on this roller coaster together called Blast Off at Six Flags that’s kinda like that ride and when the staff lady was checking seatbelts, she COMPLETELY skipped over my brother and pushed my seat belt in to lock it. I was safe but he wasn’t and we both kept trying to get her attention but she just walked off to check the other people’s seat belts. Rides like these feature a physical buckle as a redundancy/ back up in case of mechanical or hydraulic failure which is what hold the over the shoulder restraint locked this doesn’t make the ride any much unsafe. Someone already mentioned it in the top comment, but rides like these really do need some kind of system that prevents it from starting if it senses even one seat belt unbuckled. You can't always trust that all ride operators will check or double-check and lord knows what would've happened if they didn't see it nor hear the mother. The primary belt is the main thing that holds you in place, yes, but the secondary belt is there IN CASE it fails.

The safety buckle does nothing . As the shoulder harness does all the work, it secures into place when the ride begins and safely secure G force movements of people up to 200kg. The safety belt is more of a psychological measure as people are used to using seatbelts. It can work as a back up if the shoulder harness fails which is extremely rare, a 1 in 750 million chance according to IAAPA. @@ygs497 that is a very sad and tragic situation, however in such a case it is the operators responsibility to identify that the individual in question was unfit to ride. The manufacturer should have clear guidelines on who is unfit to ride, such as being to large, small, tall, short, disabled etc. If the manufacturer did not specify that the man in question was no suitable to ride in their guidelines, then they should be held fully accountable. I understand most ride operators are usually teenagers and young adults ( I was a manager at Disneyworld for a few years ) and therefore shouldn’t be expected to have to identify. risks outside the rulebook. No one should ever be injured, let alone killed, whilst just trying to have fun. Especially when young kids or in this case a disabled veteran may be victims, and could leave families and witnesses with serious trauma and PTSD. I know for in my case we took ride safety VERY seriously at Disney, and in the rare cases we had incidents, no matter how small, there was always a massive investigation and lots and lots of paperwork to ensure it never happened again.

This happened to me at 6flags on x2 like 7 years ago! The chest part that goes down over your shoulders wasn’t clinked in tight and they didn’t check. But I was terrified so I had my arms crossed across the outside of the safety bar and when we went on the loop part, the pressure of my arms against the bar clicked it in place when we were upside down. Otherwise I probably would’ve slipped out and hit the ground like an egg ! Thank god for fear that day 😂

I remember me and this little girl not much older than 6 went on this one ride, she had been really small and so am I as a 4’11 thirteen year old. When we had gotten on and latched in I had realized the latch was broken.. making us unable to protect ourselves from hitting metal bars and the roof of the ride. At some point it spun around constantly flipping us upside down and right side up over and over again, I had held the little girl in my arms while also trying to hold my self in place. I had busted my head open from the metal of the cage and the little girl was safe to say traumatized. Not to mention me and the girl had hit our heads many times on the top of the cage, which was poorly padded… by the time I left the carnival my head had been throbbing and bruised with trickles of blood running down the back of my neck, which I had not realized until my boyfriend (now ex) had pointed it out laughing. Once i got on a roller coaster when i was about 5 or 6. It was an old amusment park, and I was about an entire foot too short to ride the coaster. The guy let me on anyway, and i didn't know better at the age. On the first drop, were were about a hundred feet in the air when I almost flew out of my seat. Thankfully, the person next to me held me down and kept me from falling to my death. I can't imagine how my family would've felt if i fell out and died all because of the guy who didn't follow the precaution. I thank that person who held me on to this day.

Remember, people hired at these parks are not "eagles." They are minimum wage employees, some of them lacking proper training or common sense, on drugs, etc. People should keep this in mind when they go there. I got on a county fair ride with a random person when I was like 14. It was the whirl a tirl or something like that where you seat 2 people in a cart and it spins around really fast. I had to hold down the poor young girl the whole time or she would have been flung out. They didn't buckle her in correctly and she started sliding upwards and out as soon as it started spinning up quickly. I had one arm on the side of the cart and one arm holding her down. She was crying and I was freaking out but I'm just happy I was raised on a ranch and strong enough to hold her down. The ride operators said they buckled her in but it malfunctioned and they said "what do you expect...these rides are built of a truck? It's at your own risk"

We all couldnt believe she was alive and in class a few weeks later, she constantly had movement problems way after recovery deep into her college years 😢

In 8th grade, I was on this ride with my older sister and it had a seat belt around your waist and over your shoulders. A couple seconds after the ride really starting going fast and turning a lot and going up and down, the shoulder seatbelts of my older sisters seat unlocked. Because of the speed, she flew forward and couldn’t go back. I was panicking and grabbed her with one arm because my other arm wouldn’t reach over and my fear gave me more strength. I pulled her back eventually and we both struggled to put the seatbelt back on and so the entire time, im keeping one arm over my sister and we’re both panicking. We ended up being fine but it was terrifying.

I was on a similar ride and my buckle wasn't latched as well. The ride operator didn't catch it. There were these 3 young boys, about 8-10 years old, who were on the ground behind the fence that saw it but the ride when up anyway. I remember going up and screaming back down, enjoying myself with my little sister next to me. When the ride dropped completely down, I was greeted with the faces of the little boys with shock and horror as if they saw a ghost. They alerted me that my buckle was undone. Good thing these rides have the overhead restraint because that is really what prevented me from flying off. I feel for those boys those because for those seconds, they felt like all doom of me being killed was on their shoulders. The ride operator was never alerted which I should've told them. They never came by to check after the ride came back down.
