To Build A Home
Written by Arielle O'Keefe
To build a home,
To hammer out a frame and put up walls,
To wire and insulate,
To roof and spackle,
To place the furniture and pick the paint,
To close the door at night and feel safe
There is a process,
And it goes one, then two, then three.
There's a manual
Passed down as legacy.
It says, "Hold this nail right here,
Line these boards up straight,
And don't forget to leave room for a doorway."
And in my body
I have been an unquiet guest,
I stomp around, insult the architect
'Cuz I ain't got no respect.
And I love to complain,
I curse this place and, though I do remain,
I am never home
And I never feel safe.
And my process
Looks like two, then six, then three.
And a manual
Is completely lost on me.
I think when they were building my place
They left off a room or so,
But at least they built me one gigantic window
So I can see all the things I like the most.
But then I learned
A baby girl inside her mama
Has grown all of her own eggs by five months,
And for four they lie in wait inside their grandma --
How about that?
So looking forward
Maybe I can start to understand the process
And process the importance of the framing
And then frame it all like something good.
Yeah, maybe I
Can dare to hide some beauty in these walls
So the woman down the line who takes my place
Can close her door at night and feel safe.
