When you said meat has a masculine connotation I screamed bc you HAVE to read The Vegetarian by Han Kang, it is literally about this exact topic and she recently won the nobel prize!!it’s crazy good and deals with the gender dinamics of both meat and flesh.

Yellowjackets is also very influenced by ancient Greek Bacchic rituals involving women driven to frenzy by Dionysus who tear apart animals and humans believing them to be animals. Lord of the Flies is also inspired by the Greek tragedy The Bacchae but there are some really good articles about the ancient Greek parallels in Yellowjackets
@bdm4833 күн бұрын
#JustGirlyThings I hadn't thought of Lord of the Flies in the Bacchus context, but I can see it now that you suggest it. I think we concentrated more on Simon's 'situation' as Christ-coded when I studied it, so the mob was less central. I love learning something new, so thank you

I just finished reading The Secret History so The Bacchae was all I could think about during that portion of the video. Glad I'm not the only one who thought about that!!

This was such an interesting video as someone who took psych 101 and learned about the football team that committed cannibalism to survive, it’s made me wonder often what we won’t do to continue on. So to see this from a female perspective, that I have never considered, is so interesting. Love the amount of discourse your channel brings!

hot take: I don't think it should be a big deal in situations like the Andes crash, The Donner Party or Yellowjackets, if it's for survival I'm totally ok with it, I would probably be the one to bring it up first in these situations tbh
@redlikeroses10627 күн бұрын
Especially if the people die naturally- it’s just a body in my opinion and if you need to eat then you should. It’s where it’s murder and not necessary it becomes sketchy and wrong.

For those who might be interested: Julia Ducournau also has a short film about puberty, that would fit squarely into the "Monstrous Menstruation" category. It's titled "Junior" and it also stars Garance Marillier. I've always viewed it as Julia's spiritual precursor to "Raw," (except it's adorable) 21:29

Your video reminds me of another video I saw recently from Princess Weekes: Why we love monsters. I recommend that video to anyone that hasn’t seen it. I do find our morbid fascination of cannibalism so interesting. I really like that there’s a lot more movies kind of exploring deep topics while using cannibalism as a sort of metaphor. I was pretty young when rock came out and I saw it and that movie definitely shocked me and made the gay panic in me just amplified.

As a trans masc person, I love and relate to this metaphor within horror so much, simply due to the female socialization and sapphic aspects of romance. Yet, as a gay MLM person, it is also very foreign to me, partially due to the lack of socialisation as a male presenting person and the masculine traits one would expect within a romantic relationship.
@crashb8006 күн бұрын
I've thought for a while about how gendered expectations of how men are the one's desiring and women are the one's being desired isn't really quite accurate towards reality, but I was not expecting to find something in the cannibal women video. Interesting video, glad I watched.
