The first thing I'd like to say is, how the fuck are so many of you critical of this girl who is learning to skateboard. Making assumptions that she doesn't want to even be there or is doing it for attention is absolutely ridiculous. Do you guys not realize that this video was made on the same day as her first video? She is interacting with and being put on film possibly for the first time ever doing something she's new to with people she's also most likely interacting with for the first time. Of course she's going to seem nervous. As this video progresses you can see she is getting more comfortable in her interaction and her confidence. Maybe the guys in Braille could have taken a different approach with teaching her some more basic skills even off camera but most of the comments on here are so fucking discouraging for any girl who may already feel alienated by the obvious sexism displayed in this sport.

Yeah, sure. But I don't think you can argue that it wouldn't make a better video if she was trying harder. Of course she can still learn eventually, but I don't see her as the best subject for a "learning skateboarding" video. She's not willing to fall, so she barely even tries. If she really doesn't want to fall ever, maybe she shouldn't be doing this. If she's worried about looking dumb if she falls, it looks a hell of a lot dumber when she never commits...
@lydie99927 жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying, but on my first day of learning how to balance and ride I definitely couldn't start doing tricks comfortably
@JavierBacon7 жыл бұрын
Of course. So is it really that great an idea to create videos on someone's first day of skateboarding? I'd say it might or might not be, depending on the person. In this case, her issues with commitment are just frustrating to watch. This is a video posted on a popular channel, and it must be judged as such. If people find it to be a waste of time to watch, they're allowed to say so. IMO they could have gotten away with this on braille army. It doesn't come close to matching the entertainment value of braille's other videos, even their other "learning to skate" videos. Pointing that out shouldn't be a problem, no offence intended towards the girl. It's just not entertaining.

Some of these comments are presumptuous as hell. As I see it, she cares, she might just be frustrated and somewhat insecure being watched not only by people who can nail these tricks almost like it was nothing but by people on youtube who leave insanely judgmental comments. Learning something like this can make someone feel incredibly insecure and it almost feels like there is something wrong with them when really the hard part is gaining the muscle memory to do these tricks on command. Honestly, I really dig this and hope they continue consistently and she becomes a remaining part of braille. These will be the videos that encourage people to take on skateboarding when they felt like they couldn't before.

Constructive criticism: First; tighten trucks. Your ankles don't seem strong enough yet. That being said, find your balance. You seem to be leaning forward in preparation for where you think the board is going to go, instead of keeping your balance aligned upright. Try riding around in a squat and stand up slowly to feel your center of gravity change. Second; work on separating the motions of your legs to two different routines. For instance, hop on one leg while kicking the other in various directions. This should help you pop with one foot while sliding with the other. Finally; try to have fun, build confidence, and don't try to force the trick to happen. Let the trick happen. Take a ride on some snake runs and float around the park. Sometimes treating the skateboard as a snowboard, longboard, surfboard, etc. helps to inspire you to let go of the idea that your are total control and to just go with the flow.

Amazing! When I used to skate as a teen, I ollied all over the place. Had the 180 FS ollie, the fakie 180 ollie, the kickflip, but somehow, could never get the shove it. I think the jumping is really important part of the ollie. I learned it after someone told me that I need to jump before the tail hits the ground so you are giving a push to tail so the board actually jumps instead of just brining the nose up and down. That was the most important information I needed. I think the tail pop and foot slide comes naturally after you realize how to make the board jump.
@nrmnrmnrmnrm7 жыл бұрын
Putting a decent looking girl on a channel with a predominantly teenage male audience is a recipe for disaster as far as comment sections go. Cool video, I hope it'll help to encourage girls who want to skate to get out there and try it. My constructive criticism to Courtney goes against the normal way of teaching, and that is to spend some time with mostly focusing on the pop and less focus on the drag. If you can learn to pop whilst simultaneously jumping as high as you can (I.e. get to the point where you balance on the skateboard is as good as your balance off the skateboard), that's when you'll be able to start doing decent ollies. Dragging will level out the board and make your ollies higher but as a newbie your priority needs to be the pop + jump combination. If a normal ollie lasts 0.5 seconds, a newbie ollie usually lasts like 0.2 seconds, and the reason is a lack a balance and comfort in the jump. If you feel like you're about to fall while you're popping you won't jump as high and you'll immediately slam your feet down. Get comfortable in the air, and get good at popping the board. THEN Incorporate more of a drag until you're successfully leveling out your board.

By the end of this year, Courtneys gonna rock! It does seem like she isn't putting %100 into this, she is hesitant to bend her legs too much for example, maybe dressing in something that isn't skin tight will make it easier to learn. If you read this Courtney, keep it up, ride off camera too and get comfortable just balancing and casually riding around, it would be really cool to watch you progress this year and see you accomplish some awesome things. I stopped 3/4 through the video and went outside. I've wanted to skate for roughly 15 years but didn't. three weeks ago i bought a skateboard and have been cruising a little, but not spending enough time on it. Tonight I ollied for the first time. Then I thought to myself "Why not shuvit?" - ended up poppin the shuvit.

OK, firstly I have absolutely NO IDEA what I am talking about and for many many reasons I will never be able to skate but I really enjoy watching all the Braille Skateboarding videos (and most of the Braille Army ones too). I was watching this video and thinking of the others that I have watched. It seems to me that one ofthe steps that you don't talk about in your very early stages of learning is the act of just landing your feet in the various places on the board. I would imagine that practice in getting your feet into exactly the right place for your trick is the first step for each trick. It looked to me as if Courtney wasn't sure of where her feet needed to be before or after the ollie or the shove it. I was thinking that it may be a good idea to have colour coded spots on the grip tape for showing where the best place is for your feet for each trick. Something like the pitching training balls they have for baseball. The problem I was seeing with the ollie was that Courtney's right foot (front foot) was needing to come back towards her left foot before it rubbed up to the front of the board. It may be better to practice the first part with her feet a lot closer together. Basically having her right foot near the bolts of the back wheel. Aaron and Nigel both started each ollie with their feet a lot closer together than Courtney did. These videos are fantastic. I really enjoy watching them. Please keep them coming. I most enjoy the "worst board in the park videos" but they are all great.

I remember being 7 years old, bombing coffins down steep hills, using a thick stick as a brake at the bottom, and hoping it would catch fire! I remember trying to tic-tac back up the hill spending more time going backwards than forwards. I remember how much fun riding on one knee was, right up until you hit a rock and literally ate the bitumen. I remember trying to mount curbs and taking the skin off the top of my knuckles as the board kicked out from under me. That was over 30 years ago now and a lot of it has faded in memory, but the one thing I do remember is the importance of those developmental years. If this girl wants to enjoy skating take her out to some small hills and let her get used to going faster. She will hate skating if the only thing she can do is not land anything.

CONSTRUCTIVE Yeah, it takes a bit more knee bending and jumping. I think a non-board pop practie might be worth it. Stand in the edge of the sidewalk, one foot goes over the edge, hangs in mid-air. Bend both knees, stump down in the street side and try to jump as high as possible. From a short contact pop, not a press-down kind of jump. This can then be taken to the board, to get the pop and the jump at the same same time. I never thought about the slide, I just ollied but kicking down and jumping (a bit). For high ollies and flips I'm sure the precision of foot sliding is key.
@cardigansarecool7 жыл бұрын
The problem a lot of kids have is illustrated well in this video. They don't even know how to really ride a skateboard yet they're sending in videos asking how to kickflip. Getting comfortable on your board the only thing you should focus on for the first couple of weeks, I'd say. Don't try to ollie if you can't even roll down the driveway. I don't say this to be rude, just friendly advice. You have to understand that once you're comfortable on your board, you will learn tricks much faster because you can focus on only the mechanics of the trick instead of worrying about the mechanics AND your balance. It seems boring maybe while you're doing it, but you'll save yourself so much frustration.

I guess Aaron's intent was to show that girls can skate too, he looks like a legit guy about that whole teaching/learning stuff. But it obviously looks like click bait "OMG GRILL HAVE TO CLICK", too bad really. (As somebody else stated, it would be much more fun if she looked like she actually wants to skate)
@TheZigglez7 жыл бұрын
I think from watching this video that this girl, Courtney, is doing good for her first try at something completely new. That being said, she still has a lot of practice ahead of her and has to commit to it to progress. My main problem i see is that she's not bending her knees enough. She needs to practice incorporating bending her knees with jumping with the board. And once you understand what's happening through the whole process of an Ollie it is easier to actually put it into action (The tail creates a pop which brings the wheels off the ground, your foot slides up the board to balance it out in-air as you jump off your back foot) once you have that pop/slide motion down you basically have it.
@NBHKILLSwitch7 жыл бұрын
I don't wanna hate but i feel like shes here for the camera. No commitment to the tricks which is a bit painful to watch. People saying its click bait... i don't agree with that but that fact that she a girl shouldn't matter. This series should be about teaching newbies who are actually here to learn and not fluff around so they can pretend to be an edgy sk8er chick.

On the contrary, she was very committed to the tricks. Her persistence with the Shove It really paid off. She kept trying and trying. Even after she hurt her shin from being whacked by the board, she never gave up and managed to stick the trick in the end.

Right so the thing is, here I am just started skateboarding, and I'm trying to do stuff on the move, problem is my pop foot, (the one that goes on the back of the board) is not my pedal foot (the one that pushes when I ride) so basically I ride goofy but do tricks regular. Should I try and do pop shuvits etc fakie? Or should I try and learn to ride switch? Which is easier?

I watched so many of these videos when I finally got a skateboard I got my ollie in like 10 minutes (‘:
@iliasarroyo5 жыл бұрын
For me It’s all about first knowing exactly what to do and watching film. Then going out there and trying to emulate the skaters I’ve been watching. Once you do that and start landing tricks you should mess around with your foot position your arms and overall style and that way you can find the most comfortable position for you, which may even make the tricks easier to do.

***** As of right now, I can ollie, shuv, pop shuv, fs 180, and all the nollie and fakie versions of those tricks, all both regular (goofy) and switch, so I am by no means a great skater... yet. But I can say I have friggin great ollies for my experience level. They're high, consistent, well tweaked, and poppy.One thing that I discovered by accident that really helped me learn them is to ollie without the board (jumping with only your front foot, tilted, knee to chest, following with you're back foot, and starting to bring your front foot down first) and doing the EXACT same thing with the board (plus a little more slide), practicing ollies with slippery shoes (mine were an old pair of Pumas), and popping the tail with just the back foot and with the front foot on the ground, like to pick up your board, and doing that same pop while rolling. Another thing that helped me really get a feel of what worked and what didn't was getting everything as good switch as it was regular. I'm pretty much the only skateboarder in northern Indiana, so I've had to teach myself, and this is what helped me. It may help you guys to teach others as well. Also, you should do a stupid skate with the trucks facing the wrong way. I got bored and tried it one day... it hurt. Love your videos -Cameron "Wolfy" Woolf
@cameron1is1my1name7 жыл бұрын
Also, props to Courtney. She makes my first like month trying to ollie look like a walk in the park. I looked like a complete idiot and fractured my wrist (before I knew how to fall), and it was awesome. The sheer embarrassment made me want it that much more. But I think she'd do even better if she was more comfortable on the board first. Im impressed at her determination though. Despite the male dominant culture of skateboarding, all her friends being better, AND being on camera, she tried her ass off and kept trying. That takes guts. Keep that shit up Courtney.
@jasonadams79917 жыл бұрын
Putting girl in the title seems stupid and just there to get people to click the video. I bet if it was a boy they wouldn't put boy learns first trick. Why not title it "New Skater Learns First Trick"? Nothing against her at all she seems cool and I love watching new skaters progress.
