My Brothers Band used to open for her when she was in "Lela and the Snakes" at the Mabuhay Gardens in SF.In 1977 .I Being younger brother had the honor of backing my old truck full of gear down the crappy alley next to The "FAB MAB"..and slugging cabinets through those side doors.

Excellent!! I saw them in about 1978 at the Whiskey A-GoGo in Hollywood, when they were the headline group and opening for them was The "Mystic Nights of the Oingo Boingo" (starring Danny Elfman)!!! believe that !!!

loved Pearl and the Explosions. At the last Leila and the Snakes show..Keystone in Berkeley. In the middle of one of Pearl's dance tunes, Leila stops the band insists on NO MORE disco ... in seconds she and Pearl are wrestling on the stage... no one new if it was part of the show or not.. 3 days later PEARL announces she has left the Snakes, taking the Stench Brothers with her.. Great to see the video. my favorite album form the punk era and the days of the FAB MAB in north beach.

It's so funny to see people like Neko Case getting a lot of hype today, but Pearl's record Don't Follow Me I'm Lost Too (prior to Driving) was classic alternative country back around 1978!

Saw them at the Mabuhay Gardens in SF around 1970 or 1980

I've been looking for a video or info about Pearl for years now. Thanks for posting this. I saw them in Seattle back around 78 and nothing since. I still have my ticket stubs. So much energy and talent, they deserved much more success than they got. You had a great tv show, It's great that you have the tapes. I love it. Thanks again

I saw them playing backup with Talking Heads in Seattle in the late 1970s. What a great show! The guitarist had a great unique funk style that was very tight rythmically. You can't really hear it too well in this video unless you really pay attention. I wish I still had their album. It was truly "all killer, no filler"!!

Awesome to see Pearl and the Guys! They were ahead of their time, far too cool for the Rock and Rollers--however, how could you not like them! I loved this band . . .

Love Pearl! She played at the Palms in San Francisco a lot in the late 70's/early 80's. Miss that time. Is she still in LA?

Gr8 band from back in the day when girls were stealing the show (Pat Benatar, Blondie, Joan Jett, etc.) Pearl E. Gates was the hit. I remember being a fan and watching them in San Fran several times. After the band broke up, I remember seeing the Stench brothers playing in a bar band at the ol' "G Room" in Fairfield. I hope they read these blogs and know that their music and style was appreciated by many. I agree with what was said earlier, they deserved much more exposure than what they got.

I worked with bands there back in the day, The Visitors remember them? In fact Hilary Stench played with them as well and cut there album "No sign of Intelligent Life on Airstrip records. Remember the Squares also? lol Good times in 80s SF music seen. Im not recalling your bands name. But then again it was the decade of excess

Amy Winehouse had nothin' on Pearl. This was a GREAT Band. Pearl, Peter Bilt, and the notorious Stench Bothers, Hilary and John. Loved them!

First concert I ever ushered for Bill Graham was at the Fox Warfield. Pearl Harbor & The Explosions were the opening act for The Talking Heads. I worked the top of the third balcony and there were *two shows*. After clearing the house and seating everyone for the second show I was told I could go *anywhere*.... well... there was a bank of seats in the front row empty (because the speakers were right there)and I walked right up and sat. An usher tried to usher me away but when I showed my badge I got to stay for the whole second show! Let me say that this was probably the best concert I've ever been to. The Talking Heads are without a doubt my favorite group... and being 10 feet away from them was amazing. I had never even heard of Pearl Harbor & The Explosions before but they definitely rocked it! Great group, great songs, great energy!
