Quite so. What the Net does tho' is give *everyone* a voice that is, largely, without consequence, so that tiny percentage of people that are {expletive deleted} get to be heard by everyone and never get the punch in the bracket they deserve. It's taken me a decade but I have finally reached the point where it only takes a single post and response for me to be able to 'let go' of a conversation with one of those people; whereas in the past I would go back and forth trying to argue in good faith when all they want to do is wind you up. One thing I have learned is to have a quick look at their profile before responding to a 'hook' comment and if it is relatively new and has no content on it then that is a good sign that it is a 'burner' and you're dealing with a Troll.

There was a reason that we have a separate hot and cold tap , back in the day, hot water was supplied by a storage tank often placed in the loft. It would heat up the water over time, so it would never be as fresh and could get contaminated during the process. Hence, it was decided to keep hot and cold water separately in order to keep cold water safe to drink as the cold water came from the mains =-0

Each has been hammered into an arc of the complete circle. @18:48, in a previous flat my washing machine was in the bathroom and that was a conscious decision since I was renovating the place from scratch. Having the washing in the kitchen is actually pretty "gross" since your soiled clothes will contaminate the air where you prepare food. However, the truth is that British homes are small and having a washing machine indoor is a relatively novel thing. The housewife either did it all by hand in a zinc tub or with the coming of the laundrette, a once a week trip up the high street.

How to get rid of heat on a hot day? Try this. I went to Guadalajara when they were having a heatwave. The room I booked had 'air conditioning' but when I got there the air-con turned out to be a fan. At night, even with the window open, the room was too hot to sleep in. I tried drawing the cooler air in using the fan but it made no difference, I was still sweating like a pig. Then I found the solution. Turn the fan around so that it points towards the window, move it a metre or so away from the window and blow the hot air out. The room started to cool within seconds.

Very funny video! I love that you don’t take yourself too seriously. I have a few observations: First of all, I have friends from the UK who have lived here in the US (one has been here since she was 17 - almost 20 years) and they still have their accents. Or at least enough of it that people will recognize it and ask where they’re from. I think it’s great because it is a piece of who they are and where they come from. Second, growing up in New England (US) where there are many old houses, I am familiar with separate hot and cold taps and I LOVE the look of them, especially the pretty ceramic ones. Unfortunately, they are huge water wasters because you either freeze/burn or you have to fill up the sink. Not very Earth-friendly. Also, dish pans (which I believe are the equivalent to “washing up bowls”) are used here in the US but you really only find them in the kitchens of older people. I think it was prevalent in previous generations but has gone out of style for whatever reason. I think they were a good, water-saving option for those who only have a single sink as opposed to a double sink. Lastly, I think it’s a sad commentary on society as a whole, no matter what country you are from, that people feel comfortable making hurtful/judgmental comments from behind a computer that they would be reluctant to make in person. Keep doing you! It’s great to watch and I really enjoy your candid observations of both countries.

First of all, I really enjoy your channel! As an American married to a Brit (hehe) for over 20 years and having also lived both places, I can really relate to the interesting and amusing differences between the two countries. And yes, I can remember feeling culture shock over separate hot and cold taps. These days I just smile and say to myself, "It's not right or wrong. . . just different." Keep doing a great job. And from one currently living "stateside," enjoy all the best the UK has to offer. I can't wait to move back some day.

The thing about people who defend separate taps is they're just insecure and embarrassed because they haven't modernised their bathrooms or kitchens for a long time. No-one who has experienced mixer taps would voluntarily choose separate taps, given the choice. That's not to say they're bad, necessarily, just mixer taps are better. Some people need to stop being so thin-skinned and taking everything, especially trivial things, as a personal attack
@davegoodwin195022 күн бұрын
Mixer taps are pretty standard in most homes so I don't get any of it lol
@davidbutler76023 жыл бұрын
I am sure someone must have said this, but the reason a lot of homes in the UK have separate taps is due to the hot water system not always having mains pressure hot water systems. If this was connected to a mixer tap, you would struggle to get hot water. Newer homes have pressurised hot water.

BTW, the reason we have separate taps in the UK is because traditional British houses used to have hot water in a separate tank (usually in the loft), sometimes open to the elements, and is not safe to drink. By having hot & cold as entirely separate, it means there is no chance of cross-contamination. A lot of houses have been upgraded to combination boilers now (with no tank), but the tradition remains.

Yes, but our work water expert said he would never clean his teeth with cold water that was not straight from the mains. It isn't just the hot tank that isn't safe!! He said have a look at yours if you have one.
@BordersJamboКүн бұрын
@@kathrynhills7174 Cold water is nearly always from the mains. It's the hot water that collects and ferments in a tank.
@kathrynhills71742 минут бұрын
@@BordersJambo Not in the UK. Many houses still have CWSTs, so only the kitchen water is straight from the mains. Our house was built 1996 and has a cold water storage tank.

I’m a dual UK/US citizen that has lived extensively in both countries. Many places in the US don’t have A/C, so it’s not a British thing. After 37 years in the US I still have a British accent. I don’t use a lot of British words because they are redundant here. I don’t agree with people leaving hate comments. I moved to the US before the internet so there weren’t a lot of resources on US culture. Many people believe what they see in TV shows and make assumptions which is a terrible guide. It takes time to blend into a new way of life.

The tap thing, a lot of older properties only had one tap (cold) fed from the mains which was usually in the kitchen and sometimes the bathroom all the rest were fed from storage tank in the loft (attic) which could be contaminated as it was standing water and fed both cold and hot water system and in the UK our tap water from the mains drinkable unlike some places. Saying that if you live in Scotland, Wales or north of England the water in central England and further south is crap..

Mixer taps and hand washing : I remember in the '50s there was a lot of propaganda against wasting water. (England doesn't have a lot of it.) Washing hands under a running tap was often given as a bad thing to do. My objection to a mixer tap is that you turn it on and out comes cold water, so you move the lever, put your hand under the tap, and suddenly it's boiling hot water. Ouch!

I agree that opening windows in a heatwave doesn’t help, what helps are closing windows and using blinds, awnings and shutters like they do in continental Europe, same in a car, shut the windows, close the roof blind and use the fantastic a/c, Its so good I will be getting a portable a/c unit for the house this year to cool the rooms before bedtime.

You were on about separate taps well there is plug in all sinks and basins, all you have to do is put the plug in then turn the hot tap on by the time it's half full the water should be the right temperature as when the hot water takes time to heat up so for the first 15 seconds it cold then it's heat up so the water is not hot enough to burn you.
