Quite so. What the Net does tho' is give *everyone* a voice that is, largely, without consequence, so that tiny percentage of people that are {expletive deleted} get to be heard by everyone and never get the punch in the bracket they deserve. It's taken me a decade but I have finally reached the point where it only takes a single post and response for me to be able to 'let go' of a conversation with one of those people; whereas in the past I would go back and forth trying to argue in good faith when all they want to do is wind you up. One thing I have learned is to have a quick look at their profile before responding to a 'hook' comment and if it is relatively new and has no content on it then that is a good sign that it is a 'burner' and you're dealing with a Troll.

There was a reason that we have a separate hot and cold tap , back in the day, hot water was supplied by a storage tank often placed in the loft. It would heat up the water over time, so it would never be as fresh and could get contaminated during the process. Hence, it was decided to keep hot and cold water separately in order to keep cold water safe to drink as the cold water came from the mains =-0

I’m a dual UK/US citizen that has lived extensively in both countries. Many places in the US don’t have A/C, so it’s not a British thing. After 37 years in the US I still have a British accent. I don’t use a lot of British words because they are redundant here. I don’t agree with people leaving hate comments. I moved to the US before the internet so there weren’t a lot of resources on US culture. Many people believe what they see in TV shows and make assumptions which is a terrible guide. It takes time to blend into a new way of life.
@michelledaniel1233 жыл бұрын
Very funny video! I love that you don’t take yourself too seriously. I have a few observations: First of all, I have friends from the UK who have lived here in the US (one has been here since she was 17 - almost 20 years) and they still have their accents. Or at least enough of it that people will recognize it and ask where they’re from. I think it’s great because it is a piece of who they are and where they come from. Second, growing up in New England (US) where there are many old houses, I am familiar with separate hot and cold taps and I LOVE the look of them, especially the pretty ceramic ones. Unfortunately, they are huge water wasters because you either freeze/burn or you have to fill up the sink. Not very Earth-friendly. Also, dish pans (which I believe are the equivalent to “washing up bowls”) are used here in the US but you really only find them in the kitchens of older people. I think it was prevalent in previous generations but has gone out of style for whatever reason. I think they were a good, water-saving option for those who only have a single sink as opposed to a double sink. Lastly, I think it’s a sad commentary on society as a whole, no matter what country you are from, that people feel comfortable making hurtful/judgmental comments from behind a computer that they would be reluctant to make in person. Keep doing you! It’s great to watch and I really enjoy your candid observations of both countries.

BTW, the reason we have separate taps in the UK is because traditional British houses used to have hot water in a separate tank (usually in the loft), sometimes open to the elements, and is not safe to drink. By having hot & cold as entirely separate, it means there is no chance of cross-contamination. A lot of houses have been upgraded to combination boilers now (with no tank), but the tradition remains.

You must be doing something right, with so many followers. I find that you are very even handed in your discourse, and insightfully amusing. Washbasin taps may need rethinking here, but we have grown up with them, and even we sometimes burn our hands under the hot tap. I love how you get so much joy out of travelling in the UK, as Brits we don't appreciate it enough. Even the British born get things wrong, when I moved to London from Glasgow 60 years ago, I lived in the South east for 40 years, when with a large group of my English friends, I silenced a room by calling my trainers sanies: in the late 50s trainers as a description was not used and were called sandshoes in Scotland, so I referred to the trainers I was wearing my sannies to the English people in the room sannies meant sanitary towels, so I got looks of amazement.

The thing about people who defend separate taps is they're just insecure and embarrassed because they haven't modernised their bathrooms or kitchens for a long time. No-one who has experienced mixer taps would voluntarily choose separate taps, given the choice. That's not to say they're bad, necessarily, just mixer taps are better. How to get rid of heat on a hot day? Try this. I went to Guadalajara when they were having a heatwave. The room I booked had 'air conditioning' but when I got there the air-con turned out to be a fan. At night, even with the window open, the room was too hot to sleep in. I tried drawing the cooler air in using the fan but it made no difference, I was still sweating like a pig. Then I found the solution. Turn the fan around so that it points towards the window, move it a metre or so away from the window and blow the hot air out. The room started to cool within seconds.

American homes and some I’ve seen in Germany have a basement area where washing and drying is done, newer houses in Britain often have a separate utility room which is ideal to keep clothes away from the kitchen.

I enjoyed this and i'm glad you didn't take their comments to heart. 🥰🥰 Ps I never noticed the you over using "like". Pps. Two taps was originally to stop the spread of bacteria in your drinking water (bacteria from the hot tap/plumming). But, we just kept on using them even after they were no longer needed. I think newer houses are going towards the mixer taps 👍

I find your videos informative and entertaining. It's interesting to me to hear about an American living in another country. I feel like British people would be happy that you are trying to inform others on their cultural differences from first hand knowledge of possible faux pas that you may have committed. You can't make everyone happy though. Keep up the good work. 😊

I am sure someone must have said this, but the reason a lot of homes in the UK have separate taps is due to the hot water system not always having mains pressure hot water systems. If this was connected to a mixer tap, you would struggle to get hot water. Newer homes have pressurised hot water.

The accent thing is interesting, I don't think my accent would change if I moved to the US - however if you watch Amanda Rae's channel her accent is approaching half-and-half, so I guess it depends on the person. My step brother spent a couple of years in Connecticut and came back talking about 'wader' instead of 'water' and trash instead of rubbish....
@GirlGoneLondonofficial3 жыл бұрын
It's all pretty fascinating! The "trash" vs "rubbish" debate is well-known in this house! My accent hasn't changed, but I do say a lot of British English words like "bin" - I don't think I've said "garbage can" or "trash can" in a very long time. Though "rubbish" is a bit far for me and doesn't come as naturally!

The fact that a friendly American choosing to live in the U.K. is recieving such negative responses is Definatly the most shameful thing about Britain. Please look past them and ignore any negative remarks you recieve. Nice to have you here.👍👍👍🇬🇧🇺🇸 Ps: the word “ like”gets over used by every English speaking country! Not just America! Forgive these uneducated and rude Brits! Keep up the fun videos!

I keep the curtains closed on the sunny side of my house when it's blazing. I also have the windows shut if it's hotter outside than in, which it often is thanks to having good insulation; no point in letting hot air into a cool house.

In my (British/English, but lived in Wales for 5 years) experience, English people don't care if you call us British or English; but Welsh/Scottish/Irish nationals prefer to be referred to as their individual nationality (the English screwed over most of them at some point in history, so I can't blame them).

With regards to sinks I have to comment, as a Brit of 56 years (no it isn't an insult) I have not used a separate hot and cold tap for at least 3 decades. With regards to washing up, is the plate clean at the end? if yes then you did it right.

So a Brit who's never heard 'crimbo used', probably not surprising. For a relatively small country there's a myriad of regional sayings, slang words, or just plain abbreviations. I'm in the north west, Merseyside, and crimbo, pretty popular here. And it's been around as long as i have, and that's a long time :)

I've lived in the states for over 25 years, I will NEVER and have never lost my accent, I'm a Slough boy through and through, to talk American would not be authentic to myself. You should always keep your accent, it's part of you. I call myself a Brit, so confused by that comment, haters are everywhere. I find these comments hurtful, try to focus on the good ones.

Thank you for watching! And good for you for keeping that accent! Do you find yourself saying American words like trash car or trunk or...any of the countless others?

@@GirlGoneLondonofficial There are certain words I had to change, tom-ay-toe/tom-ar-toe for instance, I often have trouble with 'water', but my husband translates lol! When I speak to my family in the UK, I never use Americanisms or I get teased. My hubs is from upstate NY and now says words like bin, rubbish etc. He's also a well versed tea maker and an Eastenders fan, I've created a monster : )

I love your videos. Being a British ex-pat in The Netherlands, I love hearing about the unique elements of British life from an outsiders perspective; something which I have experienced with the Dutch way of life. Originally I am from the Liverpool area, and we say ‘like’ there a lot, too. And non-mixer taps are useless.

@18:48, in a previous flat my washing machine was in the bathroom and that was a conscious decision since I was renovating the place from scratch. Having the washing in the kitchen is actually pretty "gross" since your soiled clothes will contaminate the air where you prepare food. However, the truth is that British homes are small and having a washing machine indoor is a relatively novel thing. The housewife either did it all by hand in a zinc tub or with the coming of the laundrette, a once a week trip up the high street.

After moving away and living in France, Germany and Canada for a few years, when I came back to the UK and bought a house, the first thing I did was change all my taps to mixers. I also miss air conditioning in summer (mainly from living in Canada...less of a thing in France and Germany). Having a utility room for doing laundry would be nice too and a lot of new build houses now have them actually. I don't know why people get so offended by some of these observations. It's OK to admit that some places do things better.

The tap thing, a lot of older properties only had one tap (cold) fed from the mains which was usually in the kitchen and sometimes the bathroom all the rest were fed from storage tank in the loft (attic) which could be contaminated as it was standing water and fed both cold and hot water system and in the UK our tap water from the mains drinkable unlike some places. Saying that if you live in Scotland, Wales or north of England the water in central England and further south is crap..

I agree that opening windows in a heatwave doesn’t help, what helps are closing windows and using blinds, awnings and shutters like they do in continental Europe, same in a car, shut the windows, close the roof blind and use the fantastic a/c, Its so good I will be getting a portable a/c unit for the house this year to cool the rooms before bedtime.

I love your accent and your channel. I’ve been bingeing on your videos for hours. I am Spanish and living in UK for 30 years ++. English husband. It annoyed me for years that I never lost my (mild) Spanish accent, mannerisms and body language. After the debacle of Brexit and naturalisation, I am actually quite proud of it all. It is who I am and my life journey. Haters gonna hate, but it is easier to ignore them as the ignoramus they are. I have some American friends and some Israeli friends that I think are quite similar in their high self-esteem. It can be good for the mental health!

Mixer taps and hand washing : I remember in the '50s there was a lot of propaganda against wasting water. (England doesn't have a lot of it.) Washing hands under a running tap was often given as a bad thing to do. My objection to a mixer tap is that you turn it on and out comes cold water, so you move the lever, put your hand under the tap, and suddenly it's boiling hot water. Ouch!

It's refreshing to see someone so erudite and down to earth who doesn't try to extol the virtues of one country over the other (most of the time) and gives an honest opinion. Who cares about the accent or the odd "wrong" word to describe something, neither are a crime are they? I'm ashamed on behalf of some of these "so called" people who don't seem to happy unless they're belittling someone over something trivial or absolutely nothing at all. Keep being you and forget the trash talk that passes for the comments section.
