A large chunk of the tourist entry charges at St Paul's go towards repairing the damage done by...tourists, plus pay for the additional staff, H&S/disability requirements, toilets etc (not easy to achieve in a Grade 1 listed seventeenth-century building designed by Sir Christopher Wren). If there is any spare, it goes towards ongoing repairs and maintenance and the ministry of the place itself, eg enabling it to offer free or low cost events to educational groups. Do they imagine it goes into some secret clergy slush fund?

These are hilarious especially the torture criticism! 1) People criticising these amazing museums pees me off when you consider that in a lot of places in the world you have to pay to go into every museum. 2) Why do people visit famous touristy places at the most touristy times and complain that it is busy?! 3) I do think a lot of criticisms like these arise because people visit places because they feel they ought to and not because they want to. When I visit touristy/historic places I will often see families/groups quickly walk around the whole thing with bored expressions on the face barely looking at anything. I'm convinced that they just visited so they could tick it off their to-do list.

Big Ben ( The Bell ) is the second bell to be made as the first one developed a large crack during testing so was replaced . After being installed in the Elizabeth Tower this Bell also developed a crack but was repaired , the tone changed slightly as a result of the repair. The origin of the nick name Big Ben is disputed , it may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall who oversaw the installation of the Great Bell or after English heavyweight boxing champion Benjamin Caunt . The Bell first chimed in 1859 .

Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and various other royal residences have, at different times, been bequeathed to the Country in lieu of tax. The privvy purse typically pays staff wages in the various palaces and for security.

Yeah so many people are not cut out to be tourists, many seem to just go on holiday just to brag about having been on holiday and would have happier staying at home watching TV. Years ago I remember being on a coach tour which visited Monaco one of the days. Loads of the group did nothing but complain about the historic locale, with the "Boring" nothing to do crowd in full force. In comparison a day was not enough for me and in a subsequent holiday near the area took a day to travel by train into Monaco to go see the parts I had not had time to see the first time. On a different Italian break people complained on visiting Venice - it is hard to stay positive about humankind at times lol

I think it's because of the advertisements in travel books, magazines, and on TV. They're like trailers for movies, and look so exciting but may not be like that when you see it yourself, just like some movies. With buildings and landmarks, they are mostly for sightseeing. Parades won't suddenly come around the corner. Like some people expect that going to London will be similar to going to Disney World. People need to decide what it is that they actually want to see from another country, if they just want to see people get tortured (for example) they should just watch a documentary or film about it. Far cheaper.

I’m a Brit living in the US and in summer 2019 I spent two weeks in Manchester and London showing a friend (who lives in the US too) around who had never been to England before. I laughed so much at your response to the one star reviews, because you’re right! My friend and I each purchased a London Pass before travelling to London and we saved so much money by doing so. My only disappointment about the London Pass though is you can only visit each attraction once. I really would have loved to have gone back to Saint Paul’s Cathedral as it was just so spectacular. Despite the no photography rules in Westminster Abbey I was a bit cheeky and took a couple of photos with my phone as I first walked in. Before I moved to NJ I used to visit London once or twice a year for a weekend shopping trip. When I was a child my mum and dad took me to London every year and we would stay with friends and get to see the sights. London is such a great place and I was so happy to go there again after almost 22 years.

Good feedback, many Visitors do zero research, they walk into buildings because it’s on a tick list. Take a tour of the state rooms at Buckingham Palace, the rear view from the lawns is of a completely property, like an English country house, the later added front elevation doesn’t help. The War Rooms are excellent, a period 1940s restoration of the bunker where the Cabinet would meet, power plant room, gift shop and cafe, the a/c on a hot day is nice.. This is where Trump was interviewed by Piers Morgan.
@danielferguson3784 Жыл бұрын
Big Ben is the name of the huge Bell which rings the hours, named from it's architect, NOT the name of the Tower, which is the Elizabeth Tower; or the Clock. Buckingham Palace doesn't belong to the Queen (King) but to the country, so the State has to maintain it, after all it is an office. It was built mainly for Queen Victoria, so is not so old as the more ancient Hampton Court, or St James Palace.

Should have gone to St James Park which has a bridge over a lake with ducks as featured in spy thrillers.

Something to mention about prices and entrance charges, most attractions and venues have patron reductions we call them concessions, for young, senior, unemployed and a carer, proof of age is unlikely to be asked for.

If people do their research before going to these attractions they would know there are loads of ways to get discounted entrance to most of these places of not all of them. The London pass is a great way to see over 80 attractions at a huge discount.
