So I liked your comment a couple of months ago because it was true at the time. But I revisited the whole no raw oils and no raw butters method and realised I'd made some mistakes. Turned out all the products I already had were fine for the detox. The second thing was shampoo. After the first clarifying shampoo, I should have found a more moisturizing shampoo to use instead. Now I don't clarify unless I need to. Personally I've never liked Shea butter because it felt heavy on my hair, and I didn't really use anything on my hair after washing and conditioning. That meant my hair dried out real fast and was impossible to seal with when I tried washing it because there was nothing to wash off anyway. So now I use a leave in and flaxseed gel. Tbh my hair is smoother now and flaxseed gel really hydrates my hair. I mostly do twists and the curls are popping. I'd recommend that you try it again and find a mild shampoo and great gel + leave in. You might actually like it this time around.

I wash my hair every two weeks with a sulphate shampoo which I apply from scalp to strands, use either a rinse-out conditioner or deep conditioner (not both) mixed with fresh aloe vera, apply a leave-in, curling cream and seal with a little olive oil. I don't use gels or mousse. I dry my hair with a hooded dryer. My hair remains moisturized and defined for 2 weeks without refreshing. I wear wash and gos mainly which I just fluff and go in the mornings and twists occasionally. Minus drying time from wash/detangling to styling is 2 hours max. My scalp starts feeling itchy close to wash day, like Day 12. I can't go past two weeks or my hair will start drying out. I have medium porosity, medium density, 4A hair. Hey, so I was honestly really intrigued by this new way of caring for my hair. I even bought some of the recommended products and honestly I didn't like the feel of my hair. I think the biggest takeaway for me is just ensuring you reset your hair by going in with a good clarifying shampoo to get rid of the layer of oils and butters. However this way of styling is really best suited to people who wear the hair out and especially people who do wash n goes. I don't wear my hair out, I hate wearing wash n goes, my hair is in twists 90% of the time and I take down my hair for a 1 day twist out at the end of the week. I tried the foam only for twist outs and my hair was dry, I tried the curly magic gel for twist outs as well and I really did not like the results. High key regretting because I went out and bought these products but again this is really for people who wear their hair out. No point of ditching my butters for using a gel to put my hair in twists lol it nuh mek sense.

There was a time when I stopped using my own homemade butter and bought some store bought item and my hair suffered for it. I ended chopping off my lifeless hair. But this trend will only work for low porosity girls. I need the heavy products, I need my emulsified shea butter with low oil. I even use silicon and henna in my hair. Every time I don't use henna my hair becomes difficult. Each to their own. Ps. I only use raw castor oil on my scalp when it feels extra dry.

If you lightly scratch and rub the sebum down your hair shaft it will coat the hair and soften it up and moisturize it. Its called preening the hair. It take time to coat the shaft but it will help if you rub your hair ends on the scalp and pick up the sebum.

I can't see myself giving up on oil completely but I can use less butter and I can get rid of the butters since my hair isn't a big fan if heavy butters or grease. However, I absolutely hate gels. Most of them. I hate. Don't like foams either. I don't use stylers much. Not sure if this is for me. I believe we all must accept that everyone is different and that there are numerous good methods out there. There is no one true method.

this is a great video! I've started washing my hair like this for almost a year and i believe the main take away is that this isn't a method, it's the basics of haircare and hygiene based on biochemistry/hair science😂. while everyone's hair IS different, it's not as different as a lot of naturals are made to beleive. Like us 4c girls, although our hair gets perceived differently in society, don't need a completely different routine laden in oils/butters just because our curl is tight.

One last time, it took a whole month for my Hair to get used to no oils and it was a struggle but on the 4th week I washed my hair and it was soooo soft before I even put the conditioner on. So it took some time for my hair t9 get hydrated after so long of a time being smothered by oils. Once my strands were free of oils, it just soaked up the water so quickly.

My question is the recommendation of specific products and methods that are not cost effective. Erebody can't/don't want to invest in a overhead dryer and/or high end hair products. I am erebody! And all the stuff I have seen is with WNG. What about other styles?
@TheTriniempress3 жыл бұрын
Guurrrrrl I'm erebody too. In my country we have small black businesses that make hair products and they work extremely well. The beauty about it, is that you have many to choose from, so if one product not working on your hair you can try another product. I put my money into their business instead of these brand name hair products.

There’s probably some second hand ones online as well. I got mine a few years back for 9 bucks and it’s still going strong. I totally agree with your comment though just wanted to throw that out there.

Use other products and do the styles you want. It works for other styles and it can be more affordable once you learn and understand how to pick products better rather than doing trial and error. If you're regimen is perfect then you don't need to try it. But for those who need help learning the basics of haircare it is beneficial. I would recommend Innersense hair line instead of Ouidad. I love Ouidad and that was the first higher end brand I used after going natural but that line has silicones! However the cleansing oil shampoo is my Holy Grail and I keep it in my shower to use occasionally. I just can’t let her go:) also try Ouidad’s custard for your wash n go. Another gel I recommend is Uncle Funky’s gel. You can still put the foam on top if you want that fluffy look!

I've been following this regimen since early December. I see a stylist in Tampa and she follows the Black Girls Curls methodology. I was instructed to start running my fingers through my hair while I am shampooing but I actually detangle with a detangling brush with my wash out conditioner. I was also instructed to only clarify when it is needed. You shouldn't be clarifying every week. I usually clarify once every 1-2 months. I can say that my shedding is very minimal now and my hair maintains way more moisture due to the high quality gels I use. A cut also helped with the detangling part. A hooded dryer is a game changer with the longevity of your wash and gos too. It will look just like it looks when you first set it with gel. Much more hang time. I have 4C hair as well.

I used to be a scalp greaser I didn’t think I could live without my oils, butters and hair grease but I was wrong. The scalp produces its own oils. I am on both virtual platforms…. hydrabar virtual salon and black girl curls. Hydrabar salon has a new product called Nurture its a gel that does not require a base or topper. Hang in there. The longer you do it you will see your curls become even more defined. I don’t use the products that you are using though. If you want a list of the recommended products let me know. I have been doing this method fully since May of this year and my hair feels so good. My hair is very similarity yours, my coils are tight like yours and my Afro is just like yours. When you keep doing this méthode weekly your hair changes and your coils and curls keep getting more defined on their own and your style will last longer then the week. Using a botanical gel like Uncle Funky’s Daughter helped with retaining the moisture from the water in the hair. You wouldn’t think with only using gels but my hair feels so soft all week long.

I was hesitant too. Three months later and I am super active it makes sense. Because my WNGs aren’t foolproof I do T/O when I’m going somewhere “important”. But I only use a leave-in or my favorite Curls Blueberry Bliss Twist and Shout cream. I use Melanin Oil on my hands to take my hair down as it’s not a RAW oil. The professional natural hairstylists I’ve been to in the past wash twice, don’t deep condition and use one (maybe two) product to style my hair. No RAW oil and it still shines and last.

Let me start by saying I’ve only been natural since last year. love this technique/philosophy. I thought I should put thick, creamy, oily products on my hair because that’s what black hair needs. At least that’s what we’ve been taught. Took me a few months of struggling and bad hair days to figure out I was wrong. My hair loves water, conditioner and mucilaginous gels - think kinky curly and uncle funky’s daughter. I’ve got the technique so on lock that it’s part of my shower routine. I’d say it adds 20 minutes to my shower, tops. That twenty minutes includes styling. And, because my hair loves moisture and because I love day 1 hair, I wash and go every day, sometimes every other day when I’m being lazy. My hair is moisturized and thriving. It’s so shiny I no longer think about dying it. No oils and butters has been a winner for me since October 2020.

Love the video. The miscommunication is that you can’t use proudest with oils and butter in them which you can just not high in the ingredients list. I use ouidad gel which has Shea butter. You can adjust the products you use. Just no raw oils meaning no oils from the cooking aisle of your grocery store. No butters that haven’t been created for the hair. The idea is to get products with oils in them not high in the ingredients list. Not cutting out oils completely
@Silvursmiles3 жыл бұрын
I got my hair done by a curl specialist a year ago who advocated not using oils or butters and I have to say my hair feels and retains moisture so much better. As for your wash and go, what my stylist recommended and what I use is Uncle Funky's Curly Magic Or Camille rose curl maker followed by a Innersense I Create Hold Gel. What works for me is applying a small amount of leave in, followed by one pump of Curly Magic to soaking wet hair and raking it in. I then mist my hair with water again and apply my gel to one entire section. Once the section is coated, I go in and work with smaller sections and fully define. Also, I sleep in a bonnet, wake up, shower a cap, fluff and go. Good luck!
@nicholehamilton58443 жыл бұрын
Hey Jenn! I have hair just like yours. I'm on week#2 as well. It takes me 4 hours total wash day, too and I keep my hair in sections. My hair is softer, but my scalp is the same, a little itchy. I use a leave in ( has oils in it, but not shea butter, castor, or coconut oil in the top 5 ingredients)gel, and foam, but I did a braidout. It didn't hold past my bathroom. I watched Jennifer Rose NYC and some older Kimberly Cherrell videos where she didn't use oils and butters for a year. She calls it moisture training the hair. I'll see how this braidout comes out. Here's to continuing the journey. If I continue to do this, I have to give away some products I've never used or barely used!

Also wanted to mention that this is not a trend, it is a basic haircare routine that curly hair specialists have been using on all types of hair for years. They've been outspoken and pushing back against the idea that we need oil, butter and cream to moisturize & grow our hair. There is also the issue of naturals turning to KZbin where KZbinrs are being paid to convince us of this false idea. When I big chopped 3 years ago, I went right to KZbin. Started coating my hair with a ton of different oils, homemade concoctions, and creams. I honestly believe that I would have healthy hair past waist length right now if I hadn't listened to KZbinrs and found a stylist instead😌

These specialists will be out with their own product line or expanding their businesses soon. Once they get enough people on the bandwagon. I’m not much interested in what a stylist has to say about my hair. I don’t do stylists. You gotta pay an arm and a leg just to sit in their chair. If there is valid science behind this trend then let them write and publish a book about it and I’ll read it and consider the information

One way to get decent definition on 4c hair is shaking it while its weighed down with water and product Anthony Dickey style 😉 the key to success with this is making sure its a bit detangled before shaking it so the coils can easily find each other and clump beautifully way faster than shingling each clump of coils out one by one and still awesome results 🤗

IMO, This ‘lifestyle’ (The Cleanse, Condition and style) is clearly for people that love to wear their hair out in defined states, even the curly cuts that the BGC stylists recommend are obviously for people that wear their hair out, imagine getting a blunt bob cut, just to put your hair back into a protective style 😵💫. If you are strictly a protective styler, please stick the using of your oils and butters instead of bashing this lifestyle. I’m not trying to sound rude or anything 😭

Now this is the video that people need to watch. Honestly, there are so many things that aren’t regulated by the FDA. A lot of those things have really allowed POC to thrive for years. The main thing about this method that needs to be understood, is the cleansing step. So many times people want their hair to be buttery smooth after using shampoo, and that’s not really realistic. Also, they don’t wash the full length of their hair. I still use my creams, butters, and leave ins. However raw butters and oils do have their place. I’ll always use a DC, but I’ll always clarify my hair before anything. I’ve also stopped prepooing and I still don’t know how I feel about it yet. It’s been interesting these past 4 months.
