Good to see you on the Wye and in my home county Becky. Hoarwithy is not far from where I live. ‘La Horewythy,' named such after 'willow tree boundaries.' I know well the whole stretch you canoed and have even swam it - well my whole life. I agree it is beautiful is the Wye with many more secrets than this. It's why I've hiked every single river from source and call my channel Wye Explorer. You've known of it for a while I believe. A good spot there - I see you passed Coldwell Rocks to. Ray Mears had a camp nearby - he's a fan of the river. Well, the pace looked sublime as did the conditions - I imagine you got back sufficiently relaxed. Here's to the Wye the river that gave rise to modern tourism in the UK. All the best. Mark P.S if interested in the Wye feel free to check out some of my hikes and camps on the channel. There are some gooduns there. Lastly I must point your attention to the plight of the river. It's in a bad way at present suffering from high Phosphate levels because of chicken demand of all things. It is dyeing slowly. So please do support the campaigns to save it - yes literally save it. Just look for save the Wye campaigns river action or others. Peace.

I paddled Glasbury to Monmouth last summer. Despite the fact that the Wye is in really poor condition right now, due to the runoff from chicken farms upstream, it is still comfortably the best river in England & Wales for multiday journeys. In summer there are so many beaches offering great campsites, the river doesn't pass through many towns or villages, and there is rarely a road running alongside, so it always feels rural and quiet. It gets a bit trickier to camp down by Ross and into the AONB, as the beaches are all expensive fishing concessions and bailiffs patrol them, but you can still find places. I loved the video, which captures the peace on the Wye, and the pretty campsites. Great to see you had good weather and an enjoyable trip

Nice one Becky. Great adventure for you and The Jakester. The Wye is a fantastic river meandering, as it does, through some fantastic landscape. When I was at school in Derby, we had an extensive canoe section in the Sports Department and a regular annual feature, was to embark on a 2 week canoeing/camping trip down the River Wye. We started at Hay-on-Wye and ended at Chepstow near the Bristol Channel. I did this trip twice and, honestly, they were the best holidays of my life, I absolutely loved it.

YOU demonstrate a 'new to me' Winnerwell stove model: LOVE the extra top surface and oven space. The lower profile seems to be a 'plus' as well! LATER, you got 'BUSHCRAFTY' with the scrapings and I expected you to CAREFULLY gather them and CAREFULLY insert them in the open firebox door. INSTEAD, you dumped the precious lit bits unceremoniously down the open fireplate😊!

Is anything being done to curb the excessive pollution in the river ?
@therogers44322 жыл бұрын
@Dan Townsend Sadly I don't think anybody's doing much at all, which is frikkin criminal... The Environment Agency are way less than useless and only interested in awarding themselves generous pay-rises every year and building more "flood defences", which as we all know just shift the problem downstream so that they can build even more useless/counterproductive "flood defences" and perpetuate the problem until all our precious waterways are concrete-lined from source to sea, instead of working on ways to dredge the rivers without releasing all the pollutants/contaminants that have been "safely" trapped in the silt since the Industrial Revolution. There are several ways to do this successfully, but they refuse to do anything because they know they've got a bottomless-pit of public money to keep helping themselves to for as long as we "need" their flood "defences"... Added to that, Severn Trent and Dwr Cymru (Welsh Water), along with all the other water companies, pump millions of litres of raw sewage into the Wye and the Severn every year when floodwater overwhelms the (minimal, because you know... Profits... And shareholders' dividends...) capacity of their taxpayer-funded Sewerage Treatment facilities and whine that "There's nothing we can do because the rivers are so silted-up and keep flooding...", yet somehow they very rarely, if ever, seem to get fined for these environmental disasters that mysteriously occur 2-4 times every year...? I kayak the Wye and the Severn (among others) as often as I possibly can, and in the early Spring (after the floods of February and March every year) the stench and sight of human waste and all the associated toilet paper, wipes, sanitary products, etc is both overpowering and stomach-churning, but nothing is ever done about it (because you know... Profits and shareholders' dividends...). The levels of Phosphates (and other horrific chemicals) that wash off the adjacent farmland are monitored at E.A. testing stations every few miles, but nobody seems able to prove who is responsible for these pollutants because that would involve people getting off their backsides, leaving their nice warm taxpayer-funded offices for once, and doing something proactive like sampling runoff from farmland, but "unfortunately" Health And Safety prohibits this from happening, and it is also (and I quote...) "prohibitively expensive" (because you know... Profits and shareholders' dividends...). Oh yeah... I should probably mention that the water companies give their managent-level and above employees Share Options every year as part of their generous employment packages, so there's not really any incentive to change anything, is there? Sorry if that turned into a tedious rant, but nobody seems to know anything about these taxpayer-funded self-serving scams that are destroying our waterways, so I felt compelled to say something to raise awareness of exactly what is going on, while they post ridiculous leaflets about their "Environmental Responsibilities And Promises" through our letterboxes along with our ever-increasing bills...
