Up until sixty years ago, men had the right to put "their" women in an asylum under any circumstance so long as the men who she belonged to agreed. Say, if she didn't want to marry or if she cheated on her husband or if she masturbated. Her father would have this right as well as her husband if/when she married. Men on the other hand were only admitted if they did suffer mental disability. This song is about the fact that women who weren't mentally ill were hospitalized not that men didn't.

This is such a good song, but some of the people are really missing the point. It's a bitter satire about sexism and mental illness. People treat women and mentally disabled people like freakshows only there for their entertainment. Comments like RainbowCookie's and PyroWing's are infuriating to me, because RC is romanticizing mental illness, treating the 'inmates' described in this song as if it's quirky to have an inhabilitating mental disease. PW, the point of the song is that ladies AREN'T there for your entertainment, and mental illness isn't just another cute aspect of a girl that you can claim as your "type." A small instance of cisnormativity. Girls aren't determined by their bodies! In any case, though, this song is great.

CJ D I know this comment is really old, but I'd like to point out that cisnormativity makes sense in this song. Girls aren't determined by their bodies, but misogynistic assholes think they are. It's also very likely that they would think transwomen "aren't real women", because, well, they are misogynistic assholes.

No, this song is NOT supposed to be taken seriously. I see a lot of girls on EA's songs saying that they suffer from mental illness and find her songs hilarious. I'm inclined to agree. I have severe depression, BPD and schizophrenia, and I'm chronically suicidal. I've been institutionalised three times, and Emilie's songs really cheer me up. The phrase "if you can't laugh, what can you do?" is so very true. If Emilie didn't make these girls (and boys) laugh, I'm quite sure a good proportion of them would be worse off than they are now. Also, the line in 'Thank God I'm Pretty'; "It's lucky I hate to be taken seriously" proves that this is all satire, and if people don't get the joke, then there's really no hope for them to ever have anything other than a dull sense of humour. On a side note, there really is a bloody pill for everything nowadays. xD

It's funny because it reminds me of the diagnosis of hysteria in the late 1800's where women who were dissatisfied with their husbands, bored, depressed, anxious, ect... were basically prescribed medically unethical treatment and the song is sort of a satirical salute to that.
@eykyra10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the story behind the album is based on an asylum in the 1800's, where many girls were taken against their will, and practically tortured but it's presented as medicine and science and seen as good for the society and a sign of progress. As Emilie said in an interview, the Victorian era is often seen with very good eyes, forgetting that there were many horrible things, and this album catches it all very well.

When she says protect your child sir, don't you just see a lobotomized traumatized women gently reaching out to a small child after being robbed of her own and a man hurriedly getting in between them and with a disgusted look on his face rushing the child away. Don't you just see the girl who had madness "thrust upon her" waking up screaming from night terrors of something she wish she could forget. There are women in institutions today living lives not so different
