Bonus fact: All STUG units were part of the artillery not the panzer arm. And all crews were volunteers. STUGs were also great morale boosters for infantry units during WW II.

Petra Meyer self propelled artillery such as the StuG quickly proved equal to the tank role. Being cheaper, StuGs increasingly served with the panzer units as an alternative. Towards the end of the war they proved adept in the ambush/defending role. The Swedish Strv103 tank was built on the legacy of the StuG.

It is not true that StuGs were operated only by the artillery arm, this was only at the start of the war. As the StuG was developed into a tank destroyer it was operated by Panzerjäger units (which were part of the infantry divisions). Many were also operated by Panzer divisions or by Panzergrenadier divisions. Sometimes entire battalions in the Panzer or Panzergrenadier division were made up of StuGs instead of the Pz.IIIs or IVs they were supposed to have. The StuH was a development from the StuG intended to perform its original role of infantry support and bunker busting, it mounted a 105mm howitzer. These were provided from what I can tell exclusively to Sturmgeschütz and Sturmartillerie units within the artillery arm, alongside StuGs they also operated. The StuG was the most numerous AFV Germany produced, so it stands to reason it was operated by artillery units, tank and mechanized units, the infantry in anti-tank units, as well as in the Waffen-SS. If there was a unit in the Wehrmacht, they probably had some StuGs.

its cheaper to make it without turret,also you can fit bigger gun on chassis if you dont add turret (standart panzer III could only use 50 mm ,stug could use 75 mm anti tank or 105mm howitzer) Turrets are more difficult to make ,add alot of weight and make the tank taller

Which makes me wonder- WTH didn't the Japanese import and copy StuGs and 75mm guns instead of trying to ship a Tiger 1 in a U-Boat??? If their 47mm Anti-Tank gun can punch holes in a Sherman turret at 500 yards, 75mm PAKs might perhaps do better. They can do away with the turrets of their medium tanks, go full assault gun. Useful in the wide open spaces of China too, as it shouldn't really increase weight. And give them a fighting chance against Soviet armor.
