For those curious, what the girls were doing was called Mental Abacus/ Mental Arithmetic. Basically, they imagine an abacus in their mind and calculate using that. There are, if memory serves me right, 8 levels. I've completed them all but I'm now nowhere near as good as I used to be.

But in asia it's very common to not allow the usage of calculators even in the toughest of competitive exams i.e. the ones requiring really complex calculations(for the most part). So learning such calculation techniques is beneficial. P.S. I understand that it's useless in advanced maths, but definitely useful in larger calculations utilizing basic operators.

Yes it's mental abacus with finger symbol methodology. I'm from India. When i was in fifth grade 2005, it was so famous and it's true they can beat the calculator so easily. There was a competition between schools and my school got nailed on the head on the competition. Of course i couldn't even get a normal multiplication right on pen and paper and for that reason i took so much pleasure in seeing the wise-ass math whiz kids in my class and school getting owned ;) yeah and the winners where the second graders of that other school... Just need to find the missing number 10 - 7 = 3, so 45 × 3 = 135 If 45 × 10 is 450, then the solution is 450 - 135 = "315" that's the answer Multiply: Edit: I said Division. 999 ÷ 3 = ? 3 × 3 is 9 so "333" is the answer Another example: 1459 ÷ 160 If, 160 × 10 is 1600 then minus it to 1459 1600 - 1459= 141, so it doesn't enough, so the answer is "9 remainder. 141". Men are at the top also in profesional mathematics. The best mathematicians alive and the best in history dead or alive are men. Ofcourse there are good and even awesome female mathematicians, and even a few legendary among them who could be in the top 100 in hostory; but men as a group are a whole other level very separated from females. That could change though, since a lot of programs to promote and support women in stem have been created while no extra suport for men, so men in general are now more prone than women to not go to university and not be given any extra suport.

Most women back then never got the same opportunities as men to pursue an education in scientific fields and never had the proper resources to get to that level of thinking. Even now despite the gender gap being much fairer, men are generally seen as the 'breadwinners' and women as the ones who would manage household affairs. So despite their educations if they choose to get married they are encouraged to not have demanding jobs so they can place more importance on taking care of the family. I would truly wish for more women to be able to place more focus on themselves and their careers without having to worry about all of these other factors

@@belgiumreal even if they do, it won't change a damn thing. Women are good at things that requires a lot of learning like biology and chemistry. Whereas, men on the other hand are good at advanced maths and physics(that doesn't have any number). You do realise that girls are getting better education facilities than boys now, atleast at my country. But it hasn't changed a god damn thing. Boys are dominating in maths and physics and i rarely get to see top doctors being girls.

@@belgiumreal I do know in person a lot of female mathematicians. They are not oppressed, a lot of them come from privilege. some of them earn good money and access to grants exclusive for female mathematicians. Some of them have enough money to pay a babysitter for their children and progressive husbands that also give care to their children. Even then they are average mathematicians, nothing outstanding. You can not excuse THEIR performance by the oppression suffered by women from the PAST. Those women I am talking did not suffered that oppression like in the past, they are privileged. And if maternity load were the main factor or explanation for their development then the logical thing would be that their arrive to greatness would just be delayed by 10 to 18 years being still more or less inevitable since they would still be in the pro math game even if at a slower pace. Professional math is a loooong game, it does not end at 65 years old, so parenting can delay professional development but not cancel it if you keep yourself working even at a slower pace, is not like in sports, you are not done once you are 30 nor at 40, assuming that you have a job as a mathematician. Is funny how most educated people are willing to accept that hormones have a huge impact in human physical abilities, and that as a consequence males and females have different physical abilities, BUT some people have a hard time accepting that hormones could make a difference in mental abilities also, as if the brain was an isolated organ not in touch with hormones. It happens that hormones ALSO affect the brain, conduct, life view, preferences, and many other mental things. This is expressed in EVERYTHING that we do. I get that is hard to accept for a lot of people because they interpret it as if we were saying women are inferior, but we are not saying that, I say they have different abilities than men. For example, Women have the ability to create new humans inside them, that is absolutely amazing, like a miracle!! Do I feel inferior to them for not being able to do that? No, I just acknowledge them and I am amazed by what they can do, that is not to say that their worth lies only in their ability to give birth, please do not twist my words. A woman has value even if she chooses to not be a mother and not every woman is cutted to be a mother even if she has the biological capacity to do it, I KNOW. And again, there are some amazing female mathematicians in history and in the present, but they are by definition exceptional among the top 100 or top 1000 mathematicians in history. I respect any female mathematician that has done all the needed thousands of hours of math work to become a professional mathematician, they are admirable just because of that and I look at them as equal partners or colleagues, they are special among women and I wish them to develop their full potential.
