My first low tech planted tank had athernanthera reneckii mini just take off before anthing else (except guppy grass lol). It's now my favorite plant ever. In my first betta's tank it would hide and sleep in the "red forest", not touching any "betta friendly" plant or betta beds i would put in there. There were so many times we thought he jummped out, but was just happily nestled in and under the leaves.

I have a HUGE java fern in my 20 gallon tank, yet I have never given any form of root fertilisation. It is planted in a thin layer of gravel.

I really like corkscrew val (if it grows too tall I can just trim it at water level)... I have it across the back of my 20 gallon tank that has platies, albino cory catfish, red cherry shrimp and a mystery snail. I have guppy grass in my other 20 gallon tank that only has blue neo shrimp and a mystery snail. I have to remove lots of guppy grass regularly but it's not hard and the shrimp love it ... it helps remove nitrates. Both my tanks are Topfin and just have the lights that came with them. I don't add any fertilizers.

Hi Irene, not sure you're covering this in one of your other videos but having a 4-5 hour break time for your lights can do real wonders concerning algae on Anubias and Java Fern. It's like an imitation of a tropical midday rain or overcast sky that aquatic plants can really easily deal with but that algae hate. What I do in most of my tanks is 4 hours lights on, then 5 hours lights off, then again 4 hours lights on. It works wonders!

I got myself some hornwort for my tank, and that stuff GROOOWS. I love the plant, but it’s a huge upkeep plant, at least in my tank.

Shrimps are truly one of the coolest animals. The way they move/swim , eat and also the way they rest is really fascinating to me. I hope i can build this amazing creatures a habitat they deserve.

Java moss has to be one of my other favourites! Not any cons I could really think of, other than the fact that it grows pretty slowly

I have a dirted tank so these might not work so well in an inert substrate but limnophila and pogostemon quadrifolius (often sold as P. stellatus 'octopus') have been lush and fast-growing - in fact i need to trim them quite aggressively. Spiky moss grows well too, as do anubias. For floaters, i've had success with frogbit. I really like how pistia looks but i'm having a hard time providing it enough nutrients.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said. all the same problems I have had. especially with the wisteria/sprite. not quite sure witch one but only grew when floating. I pretty much only keep cryptocoryne now. and a couple off fast growing stems and floating plants for excess nutrition uptake. but it sure cost a few quid getting there 😆

With the water sprite what I found worked for keeping them in the substrate is put a little dab of cyanoacrylate glue on a washed pebble and stick the roots to that not had an issue since even with apistos and pelcos darting about near the roots

If you change out your water once a week no matter what they will do good unless you're putting chlorinated water in your tank. An air stone in there also will help

The genuinely easiest plant I think is hygrophilia polysperma/dwarf hygrophilia but I hear it is banned in the US, or at least in some states (I'm in Canada). Not surprising because it is a beast lol.

It must be our water. I have the same water as you - super soft with artificially high pH. Our municipality makes the pH higher so that the water doesn't erode pipes. I have nutritious substrate, I fertilize with all in one Tropica fertilizer, I have decent lamps (Twinstar B series). Still my crypts and swords are barely alive, only the tops of water wisteria look fine and valisneria nana also is barely holding to its life. I can just grow loads of cabombas and anubias nana. I now even use GH/KH shrimp salt as I got amanos. Still plants look sad.

I can't keep anything but Java Moss alive. Anubias, Java Fern and Val have all let me down. Or I have let them down. High light, low light or no light. Ferts or no. Cold water or warm. Hard or soft. I've tried it all. It doesn't matter, it all dies. Java moss, I can grow in a mop bucket in the closet (not really but close). That said, I'm trying again. I got some Java Ferns and Val from the Co-op. I am stubborn. It has been a year since I last tried plants aside from Java moss. We shall see how it goes.

so did the testing of your water not work out for you? Maybe too many variables to pinpoint the problems. I used to buy plants that I thought were pretty but my water is not good for aquatic plants and I wasted so much money. However, like you indicated, I eventually landed on the ones that would hold up and I make sure first off if the care is still for beginners as so many don't do well for me and/or they need co2. Strangely any stem plants I have tried all die and even floaters too.

Don’t plant java ferns in the substrate, it needs the nutrients from the water, so u can only put it in between cracks from rocks, also the same thing with every type of anubias

My favorite beginner plant is a bit less common: ludwigian natans super red! It turns very red even in my low tech tank and it grows tall but has small leaves so it’s perfect for a variety of tank sizes. It grows faster than any other common beginner plant in my tank. Here’s the catch: When you first receive it it probably won’t be fully acclimated to submersed growth, so float it until it starts growing roots, stick it into the substrate and when you get some new growth, cut off that new growth and immediately replant it because the old growth may decide to randomly start melting. Then new growth can be propagated just by trimming and replanting, no floating or waiting necessary!

@@plantedlife Red root floaters are great too! Just make sure to add iron to the water and get it really close to the light and they’ll turn pretty red. As I’ve told someone else, I add Flourish root tabs for all my stem plants so maybe that contributes to the redness of the ludwigia natans super red, but it’s definitely the reddest of my plants by far, especially the top leaves! The closer it gets to the light the redder it becomes.

I’ve only been in the hobby for a year now and I’m just a kid, but here’s some great plants in my opinion. (Btw my tank is high lighting and has co2 injections so these might not work perfectly for low tech) 1. Tiger lotus: they take a little while to take off but dang when they do they get huge. The leaves are really beautiful covered in red spots and some leaves even have a red tint or are red entirely depending on the iron level and light you provide. 2. Monte Carlo: it carpets very fast, It’s really green if you get the conditions right, and it can do well with lower lighting 3. Vallisneria: I have mixed feelings about this one. it’s pretty nice, but melts easily and can take over your tank when it does do well. Good for low lit tanks tho. 4. Bacopa: at first mine were doing really bad but just keep in mind that a lot of plants must melt before they get better. Do not cut the melt off whatever you do, they’ll fix themselves eventually. I did that and almost lost all of mine. I think a way to get them going in a new tank is to leave them floating until you see at least an inch or so of new roots before planting down in the substrate. :)

The easiest is Anacharis or Elodia or whatever it’s called in the store. Drop it in and walk away. Plant it if you like. Want more, cut it in half and plant that. Wash rise repeat. Plants for days.

Anacharis is probably my favorite aquarium plant for that reason. I got it in my tank June 1st and it was maybe 8 inches long? Now it's well over two feet and growing along the surface of the water

I personally love Bacopa Caroliniana. It grows fast and tall, it works great in and out of substrate. It's the one plant I have that never fails me. Duckweed on the other hand! I can't get ride of it!

I like the Monnieri. Wierdly enough, my duckweed does not reproduce that fast. (I do have a bit of surface movement due to fans blowing on the water to chill my tank for my axolotl, I suspect that's why my duckweed hasn't exploded)

My watersprite is interesting. I bought it and it looked ok but then it started to rot and I thought it was the end but the it kind of split into many smaller watersprtes and I planted one of them on the side of the tank that faces the window and it's ansolutely thriveing.

I have two Aponogeton "Betta bulbs" in my 40B and at their biggest they nearly filled the tank. Some species have a dormant season and die back periodically. I recently added hygrophilia (aka water wisteria) and it's been a lot of fun watching the submersed leaves forming!

Tank update my 15 to 16 gallon tank is crystal clear the miniature catfish kept on eating the plants so I moved them into another five gallon tank in the mosquito fish kept on fin nipping my betta fish so I moved him to another tank that's pretty much 20 gallon bucket and yeah my betta fish he doesn't do much I wasn't expecting him to be overly aggressive but I think some level of aggression would have saved his fins from getting nipped

It feels like the only thing that really grows in my tank are floating plants. 😂 I try and get only water column feeding plants and I run into the issue of potassium deficiency. Getting potassium fertilizer when I'm able to go to the fish store thanks to your advice. Hopefully, my plants will thrive better.

I dont have much luck with rooted plants either. I might suggest guppy grass and moneywort. Moneywort can be planted (i just wedged my roots under a long piece of driftwood) and it grows straight up towards the light. I then used those vertical stems to stick my guppy grass onto. They work great together and I have high pH (8.2) and high TDS (~280-300). Aquarium Co-Op has a good video on moneywort as well where he actually uses it as a floating plant and it looks fantastic that way as well.

Here are some others I've had success with. (1) Helanthium quadricostatus. I have it in inert gravel without supplements. It has done very well, stays relatively algae-free and sends out shoots. (2) Cyperus helferi. I plant it in the back of my aquaria. It doesn't grow like crazy, but it does well and doesn't seem to attract algae. (3) Bucephalandra sp. "red". I stuff it in holes in dragon stone. It doesn't grow fast but it stays healthy and looks nice. It attracts some algae, but not a lot. (4) Eleocharis montevidensis (Giant Hairgrass). Looks similar to Cyperus and does as well. My water is pH 6.8-7.2, so relatively low. I have no floating plants, but I limit my artificial lighting to about 6 hours per day. I don't aim to get a lot of plant growth, but rather to maintain healthy looking greenery and minimize algae.

One of my favorite beginner friendly plants is Java moss. I love it for it's look and function but I also find it hard to keep green and healthy at the same time. I've had mine turn brown over time yet I have found that if you keep some of it just above the surface level of the water, it takes on a interesting new form and then you can break that up into little mini moss balls. I would love to read your thoughts on Java moss.

Does java moss require soft water? My java moss turns brown and dies within 2 weeks in southern AZ hard water. Experimented with over $50 of moss plus another $50+ of various plants foods plus $50+ of water treatments. Only the aubias and guppy grass have not died. Any suggestions other than silk plants?

@@emihayashi7725 I will have to do a bit of research, I can honestly say that my water is also very hard and even though most of my original moss has died or turned brown, I still have healthy clumps that formed around the surface area of the water from a branch. I broke off some segments and basically wedged them into the branches of some driftwood. I'll let you know how they are doing and what I learn about the water hardness for moss.

This was an excellent presentation. I went through everything that you did in finding the plants that would do well in my tanks. Anubias nana petite does the best. Cuttings from the two original ones I got almost 3 heads ago are all over the place now. Java fern has always been a bust, but Java moss does great. I bought a brownish mess in a bag, and now it's all over my driftwood, really thriving. My platies love it.

6:06 I actually never had my Cryptocoryne being that lush for some reason. Had a dirted tank with extra root tabs, they got long leaves but not that packed and lush. Anyone got an idea about this? I always want to achieve this on my crypts, since it's one of the only plants that worked for me besides Dwarf Sag and Hornwort

I tried and tried to grow water sprite (bettas looooove to play in it), but it always eventually melted away. 😭 Java fern and anubias I have had the most success with, really have them in all my tanks because of propagation. Had the same experience with crypt wendtii--OG plants grew lush and full, pulled them out to propagate in other tanks, and those did great, but replanting those originals did not. My other plant gripe is floating plants. I think they need ZERO surface agitation or they just melt away. I've failed at red root floaters and frogbit several times. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think of all the beginner plants, anubias is the best one around. While yes, they can be algae magnets and certain anubias will melt easily, I’ve had a lot of success keeping them. I think I have at least one in every tank I own. Also I’m not sure if this classifies for a beginner plant, but I’ve also had a ton of luck with ludwigia! They’re definitely background plants, but have lovely colors and grow well in mid to high light. I really love them!

Thanks so much for this video Irene. So far the plants that have worked for me has been Anacharis Elodea (incredible fast growing plant), Brazilian Pennywort and Java Fern. My Anacharis and panda platy “Polly” have been bffs since day one♥️ they definitely have each other’s back since Polly is a great gardener and the Anacharis provides a great sleeping space for her.

I killed the first anubias I bought, the instructions on the package said to bury the roots in the substrate. Oops. I bought a second and it's still alive. I have a java fern that is doing pretty good, and something I'm not sure what it is that is thriving. I have something I think is called cardinalis. That looked rough for a while, and I thought it wouldn't make it, but it's looking much better. I'm not great with plants in general, but aquarium plants are even more challenging for me lol.

Anyone have any good but relatively cheap recommendations for Nutrient Rich Substrate? I've been using sand for years and my plants have only declined over time (presumably from taking any stuff that was naturally in the sand.) The continual cost of root tabs sounds awful. I've got Aqueon Leafy Greens but I'm learning liquid C02 isn't enough for root feeders (A no brainer, I don't have any excuses lol)

I managed to get a beautiful planted tank first try while using just gravel and sand as a substrate lol, I didnt even know there were aqua soils at the time so my strategy was to just not gravel vac and let a soil build up. It helps I had a huge log in it and stocked it low in the start though, the only rooted plants that could get enough light though were the vallis since I couldnt keep crypts alive. Currently its mostly anubias, a lot of java fern, bobitis, and a little buce with vallis growing from the bottom. Though I had a lot of issues with lighting in the beginning since its a 40 tall so I had to have a lot of light on it to get light to the bottom but then the plants on the wood closer would get too much so I had to use water lettuce, water sprite, and pennywort to shade specific areas. I also have super soft water so I had to put oyster shells to buffer it, worked well since where I live they are all over the place.

Are you still have gray algae like really bad I moved that tank to direct sunlight and all the algae changed to green algae I think it was like trying to pollinate within the tank but after that I just got a snail and the snail ate all the green algae so I recommend if you ever see gray algae in your tank putting the tank under direct sunlight if you can

I've seen it done before the tank is actually set up. Like, they lay the substrate and just a tiny bit of water and then grow the carpet with moss. Once they have the coverage they want, then they fill the tank with water and begin cycling.

I'm having trouble getting plants to stay alive during this heatwave. I had to research plants that will tolerate a consistent 82°F tank because everything was melting. (Currently the tank is at 90... yikes. This heat is a little much for my fish.) But I've had Cryptocoryne and Nymphaea (dwarf water lily) survive this. I just bought Vallisneria and Myriophyllum (parrots feather) and java fern, so I'm hoping these guys make it, since they're more tropical. Alternanthera (scarlet temple) is extremely unhappy in my tank. And by my research, I'll never be able to do carpeting because those plants are too delicate for this heat.

I keep standard Java fern/Trident Java fern, Anubias barteri var. nana, Vallisneria Torta, Marimo moss ball and finally floating Hornwort. All these plants grow like mad in my tank! Hornwort is best floated and has never shed needles for me other than when it was first introduced. I do dose API Leaf Zone which works well for these low tech plants. P.S. I have ordered some Water Sprite to float because like you originally it didn't really grow in the gravel but I do like the look of it floating!

My favourite is cabomba. I'm not sure why people classified them as intermediate plants. They just took off and took over my betta tank! Another favourite is vallisneria, they also grew well for me. A plant that I don't really like but grew like crazy is Egeria densa. And a plant I heard grows crazy fast but isn't doing so well in my hands is pearlweed. I like hornwort, but I can't get it to stay in the substrate

I agree! The plant you showed as Water Wisteria is not. It is probably a Hygrophila of some type. Maybe Temple Plant.

I had to move the miniature catfish out of the main planted tank because they were eating the plants I have a rainforest plant that has survived multiple Winters it's actually kind of one of my prizes possessions
