The best grooms are the ones where you remove enough fur to make a plushie the size of the dog, and the dog still looks just as poofy as before 😂 As a Finn I knew that these puppies shed ridiculously (a neighbour has one and hair is always floating over the fence to our yard), but there's shedding and then there's Ilo producing a second Ilo without even losing any of his poof! I had a finnish lapphund a few years ago, literally the nicest dog ever you can own. They are such delight! As I am from northern Sweden, the finnish lapphund is quite common there alongside it's swedish cousin: the swedish lapphund. Mostly their coat color being the differentiating factor. The name lapphund means "sami dog", samis being one of the indigenous human populations in sweden (+ finland and norway). The lapphund was bred for multipurpose use, but mainly for herding and protecting rain deer. This makes them very smart dogs, able to learn and do anything. Their coat is so thick, allowing them to withstand essentially any amount of cold. Minus 30 celsius (-22F) is literally like a cool summer breeze for these dogs. The dog is also a very healthy breed, like most northern european spitz breeds they can easily grow to around 15 years old. Mine became 16 years old. The lapphund is also a perfect family dog, being so gentle and caring. They are able to relax so easily, but still really enjoying an active lifestyle. Some lapphund facts for you people :D Edit: I thought he wasn't a pure bred lapphund mostly because of his droopy ears, but I've been told below they can have droopy ears. But first time for me seeing one with it, droopy ears are definitely not common!

My grandparents used to have a Finnish Lapphunds for like 40 years. I have very fond memories of getting licked in my face whenever visiting my grandparents when I was a kid. My grandparents are gone now, and so are the dogs. They had always had one, but the last one was the best dog. He was called Jaakko and he was the best dog ever, super smart, super obedient and such a nice dog all around. When he died of old age after a very happy life of farm work and being pampered to pieces my grand parents just never got a new dog, they were so fond of Jaakko. No dog could ever fill the void that he left. A few years after the passing of the dog, both of my grandparents died of natural causes (they were well in their eighties at this point so it's fine). I like to think that they are somehow together with the dog they and I loved so much.

i'm finnish and i had a finnish lapphund called sani who sadly passed away in the summer of 2020, on the day after her 14th birthday. i still often cry when i talk about her bc i miss her so much. she was the absolute kindest floofball and loved all humans and dogs she met. i really love this breed, finnish lapphunds are often very healthy and live long lives, and they're very sweet. can also be loud as heck and extremely silly, lol. they also shed like no tomorrow (we could've built several lapphunds from all the fur sani shed, lol).

I have a 15-year old Finnish Lapphund. I wish you could wash and brush him, because he absolutely hates brushing - the same reason as you said on the video. The undercoat is amazing. He loves to sleep outside even in - 20 C. So you can just imagine how much there is brushing now when the summer is coming to Lapland... But what a lovely breed, there is no friendlier dog than this!

To anyone who thinks of getting such a dog: keep in mind that their breed is used to extremely cold temperatures. -30° to 15°C (-22° to 60°F) over the year. So it is not good for the dog to keep them anywhere south.

do you think the South of England / North or Center of France would be appropriate for such a dog ?

@moimoiGirlFin3 жыл бұрын
@@billy_romeo I would also like to say that during very wet rainy times you should take extra care to make sure their coat dries all the way since it can be so dense it takes a long time to dry and be dry to touch but still damp next to the skin(learned this during a very rainy summer). though if it doesn't get super cold they may grow less undercoat.

@@billy_romeo Thats fine. As long as you don’t live in a super hot place you manage with it :) we had a super hot summer in finland, so i only went on short walks with my dog during the day and long one at night. Finnish Lappunds are really really sweet dogs! In fact, I feel like the dog breed reflects the people here in Finland, generally pretty calm, kind, and all around welcoming and warm even if they are a bit quiet. My brother in law owns 3 of these beautiful dogs, and I adore them so much.

That is, if the dog gets trained properly. I grew up with one and our dog was just like Ilo, big and fluffy and so well behaved. Fast forward to someone I dated for a couple of months; their family’s female Lapphund had absolutely no basic training, no self-confidence, and she was kept outside on a super short leash all year round. Her family didn’t even want to take her for walks because she was so problematic to handle. It broke my heart.

Aw, the "After" shot at 3:41 is the best ever! He's too perfect! I would love one so much, but sadly, I live in a sub-tropical climate, so it would be mean to make one live here. He'd have to be inside all the time & walks outside would be miserable for him. I did about 3 seconds of research and turns out Finnish Lapphunds are sensitive to heat because of their extra-thick coat, but they have a lot of energy & need lots of exercise. :( He sure is beautiful.

@@Obeach18 That might be, but up in Sapmii they can actually thrive outside. They love snow and sleeping in it. As dogs for Samii, they walk on thundra and love every second of it. I get that you love your dog, and try to do your best by the puppy. But being comfortable inside does not equalize being comfortable outside. Especially with breeds like this that was made to live outside with a lot of activity. About a quarter of my family are Samii and live with reindeer, their dogs refuse to come inside during the winter, and temperature can be as low as -40C.. but in the summer they will come inside to cool off as soon as it gets to 20C.

Finnish Lapps are some of the most amazing dogs - easy to train, loves children and meeting new people & has so much love to give no matter what. This boy is gorgeous, very pretty white flanks. Mine is all black and my grandmas is a cute lil girl w a white heart shaped butt. The breed is wonderful so I can dearly recommend it, even tho it’s hard to get your hands on them outside of Scandinavia. If you want a cute and easy going dog that’s not a husky or a Pom Pom, then this double coated, shrill barking, blue skinned baby is perfect. Even for new dog owners as long as they keep up w the fur maintenance to avoid matting on the stomach and chest. I can sometimes pull out clumps of hair when it’s shedding season. Very very satisfying. Too bad my old man hates it but tolerates it because he’s that good.
