Most dog breeds are fairly intelligent, just different.

If you want to get a sighthound, there are so many things you have to know beforehand! They need martingale collars because their heads are too small and will slip a regular collar. They need a quiet environment. Their feelings are easily hurt so they don't respond well to raised voices or harsh commands. They have such a high prey drive that they can focus down on whatever animal is attracting them and ignore everything else. I love that borzoi are getting so much attention right now, but you have to know what you're doing when you get a sighthound.

@Mightydoggo Yes, it's true! You need to do research before taking any dog home. But there's been so much internet buzz around borzoi recently. Yep, they are VERY firmly not an off-leash type dog. So unless you have a fenced-in yard that tall enough that they can't jump over it, they'll have to always be leashed up when they're outside. I'm not sure about the intelligence studies on dogs, because they're obedience-based. It's not the same breed, but my greyhound (similar to borzoi) was very intelligent. He didn't care about commands however, and only listened to the few who gained his respect. He understood full sentences and seemed to grasp the idea of being asked to make decisions. If I ignored his request for dinner or to go out (ADHD oops), he would grab the most valuable/dangerous object in the room and take it to his bed to pretend to chew on. He'd pop up and leave the object as soon as he was asked what he wanted. I really miss that crafty imp 💔

Don't have a borzoi but two Caucasian shepherds. And everyone said before we got them that they are not very smart and just brainlessly defend their territory. Also that they show absolutely no affection. And that is such bullshit. They are extremely intelligent but if they think your command is stupid they will just ignore it. I would even go so far and say that they are on the level of border collies with their intelligence. They just have a very different way of thinking. And their main priority is simply not to always to please their humans. And that they don't show affection is ridiculous too. If they are shown affection they will return it double. Back in the 70s I shared my life with a Borzoi who excelled in AKC Obedience trials. He became a Companion Dog and then a Companion Dog Exellent. His average score for each of the two degrees was 195 out of a possible 200. He won many silver trophys and ribbons for his almost flawless scoring. He was never stubborn and seemed to love the exercises he needed for his obedience achievements. 🐾

This is very unfair and yes, I agree that intelligence tests are based on obedience. I have a greyhound who is the closest relative to borzoi, he is calm, smart, affectionate, friendly to people and other dogs, very careful with puppies and understands two languages. The fact that he is independent and sometimes does things on his own terms tells me that he is more intelligent than many other breeds.
@KARMAZYNA Жыл бұрын
Same can be said about cats, rabbits or rats. People assume that because they aren't as obedient as some dogs, they aren't as intelligent. But they're actually smart, they learn and draw conclusions, they figure out stuff on their own. And they form strong bonds with their humans.
@danascully7358 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Humans that are independent and think for themselves, we don’t label them dumb. Is Steve Jobs dumb? No. He just didn’t want to follow the rules. Sight hounds are the Steve Jobs of the world.

When I was a vet nurse back in the 80's, one of these would come in occasionally. He'd come in and put his head on the vet's desk, and his back end would still be out the door. He'd lie down in the waiting room, and be longer than it. I should add the practice was mainly sports medicine....racing greyhounds. The grey hounds would give side eye to a dog that that was taller, skinnier, but somehow hairier than they were.

My Mom has 2 borzois. Their prey drive is insane. They constantly injure themselves chasing squirrels. They are absolute LOVES!!! The sweetest, most snuggly giants. They shed like crazy and need a lot of grooming. They also jump on top of the countertops to get food. Very stubborn. A dog for a more experienced dog owner for sure. Also Zaro, the male Borzoi, is huge. I am 5’6 and his nose reaches my shoulder standing next to me on 4 legs. Not jumping up. Absolutely love this breed ❤❤❤
