Years ago, I had a Samoyed. When I watched TV in the evenings, I would sit on the floor with him and comb (yes, comb) his fur. He loved it, and because I did it several evenings a week, he never had mats. He would lay there and soak up the attention. When I finished one side, I would roll him over for the other side. He was absolutely beautiful and one of the happiest boys I've ever had.

Tried to do the same with my cavalier, but on his blanket on the sofa. Hoped doing a little brushing every day in a chill, cozy setting would make him like it. As soon as the brush comes out he looks like he's about to be beaten, so didn't quite work out 😅

This has always peaked my curiousity. I've never used one so I don't know what it's like, but the groomers near me sounds terrifying from outside. It is just an endless cacophony of barking from numerous dogs. I'm surprised any dog can stay calm and quiet in there.

As a groomer who works in a quiet shop and does only one dog at a time, I 100% agree. I wish busier groomers wouldn't resort to suggestions like "shave or sedate" when a simple "I'm not the groomer for you/a quieter environment would be better for him" would be so much more helpful.

Absolutely! Huskies simply are very chatty dogs, aren't they? At first I also thought my own Husky was growling, but those are so gentle that he's basically just "talking" to you. I am not expert (social scientist, not dog groomer, just dog lover) but my impression is that some groomers have issues with certain breeds, and they tend to displace their own anxiety onto the animal. Of course the animals sense your anxiety, and things can escalate. Any parent understands this process; it’s similar to how toddlers respond. They are SCARED. It is normal for them to respond aggressively when scared. The groomer must be the adult and try to soothe them. Apparently, many can’t be bothered as it is just a production line to them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yeah that 'growling' was really a kinda grumble groan talk that's like a modified yodel howl that malamutes and huskies do sometimes. The sound emits from higher in the throat with less vibration and you will see the dog is relaxed and the body language is not threatening. It's used for complaining and talking and even throwing a tantrum but is not meant aggressively. At first it can sound similar but she rightly observed the dog's body language and demeanor was friendly the whole time.

I came to say that. A family member is a pet groomer, and I hear the private thoughts sometimes. She doesn't want her own business, so she's at a shop. She's not taking any job that seems dangerous, which I agree with, but she's also refused to take most big breeds for awhile, sight unseen. I work as a CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) and videos like this are so interesting to me. Any time you have an animal who comes to you with a negative reputation but they behave very well with you makes me think of the residents I care for who have a reputation with coworkers as being difficult or even verbally aggressive, but are only ever "rude" or even plain nice with me. It doesn't mean the other people deserve the bad behaviors (although some of course do), but sometimes it really just takes a little extra kindness, patience, and compassion to take the edge off. I don't know if that made sense haha, but I think about it every time you post a video like this.
@persephonehades7547
@persephonehades7547 8 ай бұрын
I had the same exact thought. There are other groomers on this platform (won't name who) that would've just skipped straight to shaving Loki rather than be kind and patient, and you can really tell how their attitude affects the pets they groom. Here, you can tell that the groomer puts so much effort into caring for their comfort, provide positive reinforcement, etc that it turns all of the "problem" pets into pets that can be groomed. Loki was obviously on the much more well behaved side, but I can't think of a single case on this channel where a "problem" pet actually lived up to their reputation wholly. Maybe Mayonaisse.

Wonder if more care at home and separate appointments for feet, brushing, etc would make this more manageable so this sweetiie doesn't spend all these hours in a single session.

23:23 definitely true! My boy Loki once got some big cuts on his legs that needed stitches. The nurses called me back to help because he was FREAKING OUT. Which is odd cuz he’s normally the most chill dog ever. I immediately realized that all the fuss is because he wanted the muzzle off. I asked the nurse if I could take the muzzle off and just hold his head, and she reluctantly agreed. He immediately calmed down and let the nurse stitch his paws with no fuss beyond a bit of whining.

As a dog groomer myself I refuse to put muzzles on dogs unless I genuinely believe the dog is going to give me a puncture wound or bite my face because if you think about what putting a muzzle on dog would be like from a human perspective the best example I can give is imagine you went to go see the hairdresser and they pulled on your hair in a way that hurt just a little bit to much for your liking and you told them to knock it off (the dog equivalent being a growl or a light snap towards your hand or the object in your hand), and then immediately after that the hairdresser stopped what they were doing and suddenly grabbed some duck tape and wrapped it around your mouth before going back to what they were doing. You would start stressing and freaking the hell out as well! If I am uncertain of how a dog is going to react or they do bite a little bit to hard for comfort I will where protective gloves and continue the groom. And with the dog biting the gloves I don’t get hurt and the dog (if they aren’t just extremely stubborn or terrified) eventually realises biting isn’t making me go away or stop what I’m doing and will at some point give up and the second they do I give them a break and a lot of extra love to let them know that when they stop biting good things happen like getting off the table quicker which is usually what the dog wants more then anything when their behaving in that manner.

@@dollsunitedcovenofkingssec6558 sedation has its dangers. Something could go wrong and end up hurting the dog and the coming out of it isn't great either. For any being, there's a limit amount of times in a certain span of time where you can be sedated. Sedation is still a form of drug use. Sure it is under medical attention, but it is still using drugs to knock you out. It should ALWAYS be a last resort thing. Dogs anxiety is usually due to something that can be resolved and changed, if the owners put in the work and if the groomer is willing to acomodate the pup. That sounds like a better option than just knocking out the dog everytime he needs to be bathed and brushed.

And having a high velocity dryer at home helps keep their fur in check between grooms. That and brushing several times a week. Brushing often prevents matting and keeps the excess fur from entering your home. That being said….get ready for a ton of fur about twice a year when they blow their coats naturally. Under that wooly fur, I’d guess he’s quite fit and not overweight like many large breeds. Hopefully they’re giving his joint support and standing on four feet is easier for him.

😂 I loved the happy hoody on him and the little tongue, so adorable! I think your calm but in charge demeanor helped you groom him better than other ones who turned him away. He was actually checking your facial expression and your body language when you said no, stay and “we can do this without dramatics” I found this line so cute and funny! 😂 And he was closely watching your reaction when he tried to react to his paws being touched. As soon as you appeared to pass his “trust test”, he listened to you. 😊

Your hairstyle is EXTREMELY cute in this video. So was Loki's smushed face and eyes in the happy hoodie. :') What a soft giant. I'm surprised he hasn't sat even once, which I think is outstanding for a dog his size and in such weather. This fluffy cloud looks adorable. The gooddest of boys.

When I was younger I had an Irish Wolfhound. She would sometimes let out little cries when I brushed her. I realized very quickly that sometimes it hurt her. I spent a lot of time apologizing to Cass, while I brushed her. Her matting wasn't bad, but every now and then, the brush would pull and she let me know. She never barked or bit me. I love your channel and how you treat the dogs and cats as individuals and your "let me see for myself" attitude.❤

Cass was a doll then. My current is a rescue so I don't have his history but sadly he is a biter. If you snagged a mat and Cass just whimpered she totally trusted you.

@@pigglepugglegoing right to sedation is dangerous. If the dog is stressed because he wants to bite/ fight, I get it. I've seen too many brought into emergency vets from groomers because of temperature regulation / dehydration secondary to sedation.

Aw! Beautiful Loki. He was certainly a handful to groom but such a good doggie. I think you are an amazing dog groomer ! I like you had German shepherds. I’m old now and although they are still my favourite dogs I cannot manage all the excersise they need anymore .I had shepherds for over 25+ years my last girl passed two years ago now . I love watching your Chanel . If I lived in Canada I would have defanatly brought my two German shepherds to you . I’m in the Uk . 😊🐾❤️🐾

Normally I am a strong advocate for sedate-and-shave when a fellow professional says so, but NOT for Loki! His coat wasn't even in terrible shape. He just needed a serious blowout. You did excellently with him, and he did excellently with you!

Yes! There is a difference between a fluffy malamute needing a good brushout and a malamute with serious matting which need shaving. I had a malamute when I was a teen and I could brush him out most of his life, but later years his fur just got too matted to do anything with short of shaving.

Some groomers use it as a easy way out. I am very doubtful of how good they are when I hear that they need to be sedated. I got a Boxer and a long haired Yorkie... The groomer may be good but may also have a fear or fixed view on breeds to...

I have had groomers tell me back when I had my little blind dog that she needed to be sedated, and I did that once and then I don't know how, but I found a groomer who could do her without any sedation. I think she just let her know what she was doing and would show her tools to her peripheral visions which is all she had. She was a great groomer and she would come and pick up all four of my dogs every time it was grooming day.

@@RiverWoods111blind pups just need some reassurance! I also had a blind dog, a spaniel mix (he looked mostly like a working cocker spaniel) - he had PRA, fully blind by the time he was 7, but he lived to 16. There was a groomer where he came out wagging his tail and stayed happily when I picked a cologne for the final touch, but when she moved too far for me to take him safely, the change in attitude with other groomers was far too obvious. He was scared with them, they didn't give him enough time before they started grooming him or enough reassurance during the groom. Honestly 5 minutes before the groom and talking to him would've been enough to get him comfortable, but they weren't going to waste any time on him. He never bit or growled in his life, but he was constantly shaking and trying to get away when they turned their backs for one second. They didn't even groom his feet the last time! So I just started grooming him at home. The only thing that was hard was cutting his nails because he dramatically pulled his paws without notice, so I started putting him on my lap paws up to file his nails using a pet nail Dremel, which went great. He was a champ for the rest of it. It made no sense to sedate him.
