@@carolesumler7986 I've been grooming, brushing and combing these big lovely dogs lying on their sides, tummied and back for 18 years. Both on table and floor. They really appreciate the soft hand. I bathed them after, made drying and final grooming much easier. Always kept the blow dryer close to the skin which bothers them less. Same for the shower head. Onto the skin. On top of the head so the water drips down while protecting ears, eyes and noses.

I had a Great Pyrenees, and she was sleepy during the day, but at night she punched in and went to work. She patrolled the perimeter of the property, raising her head in a thundering bark at any sound, and wore a nice path through the woods. It must have been really heartbreaking to part ways with this sweet sleepy guy but I really have to applaud his previous companions for putting his needs first. It can be really difficult to admit that you don't have the capability to properly care for a pet anymore. But that admission is really important to their health and happiness and its on us to let them go on to better things.

I agree. I have a friend that has a mixed French bull dog that she clearly can't take care of. Poor dog is in cage all day due to her being at work, her place doesn't have space for it to run around, and it barely gets taken out for walk because after work she's "exhausted" and only wants to stay home. Since this dog was a puppy I had told her repeatedly (after it was obvious that she couldn't train it) to let the dog go, but she refused. In my country there's no organization or laws to protect pets, so I really can't do anything else beside trying to convince her.

It's always hard to let go of a family member. Several of my childhood pets were rehome from folks we knew. One was a dog whose owners were moving from Florida to Alaska and they were worried about her adjusting to the climate. They loved her and had since she was a baby. We had her for the rest of her life and she was one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. Loved everyone and would probably try to make friends with a dead tree stump and succeed.

@@HelenMcCallister That's honestly so sweet. Especially considering how prevalent it is to shop around. It must have been wonderful for them to know that they went to a loving home afterwards. Because you really can't guarantee that if you surrender them to a shelter. And then being left in shelters can be really traumatic for them because they don't know what's going on. Transitioning from one home to another is much less stressful. Especially if they were neighbors and they already sort of knew you. I think it's lovely that your family has taken on multiple rehomes. 🥹

His sleepiness isn't all that surprising XD a lot of livestock guardian breeds display nocturnal or at least crepuscular activity, because it's more often at night when they have to worry about predators coming for their herds. It's common to see them lazing around during the day, especially when the farmers are out working around the animals, and then hear them barking up a storm at night to let predators out there know "hey, this territory is taken"

You also want them to be pretty low energy most of the time, so they don't kill the animals they aren't meant to protect. Toby Dog vs. Abby Dog, if you follow a certain farm channel. How adorable. I have learned that most livestock guardian dogs are very chill. That's part of their breeding. They need to be calm around their charges. Even when in super protect mode, they are not really hyper spastic. They are a true working dog with a job to do. I love that you said, bye, I'm leaving and he was completely uncovered and just melted farther onto the floor.

It makes me so sad that people don't seem to even try to inform themselves and understand a dog's body language and symptoms. So many dogs feel stressed at the groomers because a stranger is touching them with weird tools with scary noises and scents! Some show it by panting a lot, licking their mouth , yawning, snapping, biting, generally being nervous, drooling, etc. Go to your local dog trainer and they'll tell you the same thing if you don't want to look it up yourself!

Dogs like this are why I get upset reading comments about rehoming pets. So many people are so judgemental, how dogs are a forever commitment, how you’re a terrible person for rehoming an animal. Friends of mine had a wonderful mutt. He was a little bit of a scaredy cat but otherwise just a good dog. Friends got pregnant and all was fine. No problem. Then, labor and delivery and things went sideways. Baby spent weeks in the nicu. Mom almost died. Dad was spending loads of time at the hospital. Then comes home with bedridden mom who really can’t do a ton. After a few weeks, baby comes home and baby will never make a full recovery, baby is special needs. It didn’t take long before the dog started peeing inside and was getting a little aggressive… because suddenly his family didn’t have time for him. A few weeks later they ended up rehoming him. Not because they stopped loving him. They loved him enough to know they couldn’t give him the life he deserved.

That's a very difficult situation, and I hope they are all doing better. I have a special needs child too, it's not an easy life. There situation is very different. Sometimes rehoming is a true kindness, but probably 7/10 times it's a selfish act made by people who didn't do their homework, and realized they should not have a dog, or they chose a dog not right for them.
@carolinacoreas7716

I had the opposite story, but the same recommendation of rehoming. My eldest sister had a shepherd mix since he was a puppy. A parent brought two pups and she got to choose one after a parent teacher conference because she was a teacher, but she knew nothing about dogs. They used to actually take him everywhere and walk him at the beach whenever they came around to Galveston. However, they stopped caring for him when they had children. They stopped having quality time with him and they would leave him in a kennel almost all day. This continued for almost a decade. Every time I'd be a guest in their house, I would watch how they barely gave him any attention and would yell at him to shut up because he wouldn't stop barking, especially when the kids kept teasing him by rolling balls or throwing toys near his kennel. The kids would get a habit of doing this that they would play in front of him, however, they were too scared to even approach him because he was big. My sister and her husband didn't bother trying to teach their kids how to behave around the dog or even to help care for the dog. They just kept him in the kennel because they were too scared he would be aggressive even though whenever he would be out of the kennel, the boys would tug his hair and slap him hard. The poor boy, he was so patient, he wouldn't move much and he rarely ever growled at them when they were overwhelming him, instead he would keep walking away to stay away from them. There was so much potential for them to integrate the dog into their family in a healthy manner, but instead they isolated him and never taught their kids manners. I would try my best to care for him whenever I was there. I would take him out to the restroom more often, I would go on walks every morning or late afternoon around the entire neighborhood, always changing which streets or what direction I took so he wouldn't get bored. All in an attempt to try to get him tired enough to not bark at 3 am and to eat more because he was so depressed he stopped eating. They shaved him down, saw how severely underweight he was, and accused me of starving their dog even though he was already like that before I came. They thought me not free feeding them like they did was starving him, but my intention was to put him on a schedule to build up his appetite while combining it with more exercise. This is a diet, but to them, a diet is only to lose weight even though that isn't correct. I bonded so hard with this dog he ended up being my soul-dog. I was also severely depressed and passively suicidal and he had helped me get mentally better. I cried a lot for him, I would beg my sister to consider neutering him because that was one reason why his behavior was too much for them, they refused because her husband felt too bad to take his balls away because it would've been like taking his own, which was stupid because it wasn't like they allowed the dog to even take out his pent up sexual frustration. He wouldn't stay away from female dogs so he'd turn too excited that he could possibly lunge or hurt other dogs and people. He resource-guarded hard, but I was the only one who could convince him I wasn't going to take away his food, or if I was I offered him treats and toys. I trained him, but because no one else participated, I was the only one he listened to. I begged my sister to convince her husband to just rehome him, I even gave her links to rescues and told her I'd help with the process, but she claimed she loved him too much to let him go. She claimed nobody would want him because he was aggressive and old, even though being around me, he showed me the contrary. He eventually developed severe arthritis in his paws and hip dysplasia all while fighting some form of leukemia. The last few times I saw him, just seeing him made me cry so hard. I begged her to just put him down at that point because he couldn't even sleep. He was in so much pain that he couldn't even lie down since it hurt him so much to stand up. So he'd refuse to lie down and would try to sleep while standing, but his body couldn't even hold him up for too long, so he'd constantly be stumbling and getting back up. They finally allowed him to get put down two months ago. My heart hurt so much, but I knew he was better off gone than being alive under their neglect. They even shaved his double coat every single time because they always complained they didn't have time to brush his coat, so his coat was so bad when it grew out, it didn't matter at the end of his life because he lost all of his hair to whatever he was fighting off. It is something I will never forgive my sister for doing, they stole his dignity and let him live in so much pain and illness for several months. The dog was even still so loyal to them two, he would get so excited to see them and would go to them before he went to me, despite the fact they barely ever gave him attention and whatever attention they did give him was just to tell him to shut up. I almost called the police on them for animal neglect, but I felt indebted to them because they were the only ones who could get me to my college and I didn't have anyone else I could live with while I was waiting for the trip up to college. And they also had kids, so I was scared it would be too much for their family. I couldn't take him with me no matter how much I wanted to because my campus only allowed ESA and service animals, which he wasn't qualified for either. Plus I was also poor and couldn't cover his vet bills. I still have a note on my notes app which recorded how much time he spent in his kennel on a daily basis because I wanted to have evidence just in case I did go through with reporting them. The average time he spent in his kennel, excluding the times I would walk him and take him to the restroom was 22 hours a day. I wasn't allowed to let him out of his kennel, because the kids were always around. Now they pretend that they gave him the best life they could when it was a complete lie, and now my nephew is brainwashed to think he was their everything when he could see his parents barely ever gave him attention (not my nephew's fault, but it feels like some sick form of manipulation from his parents). To this day, I am very very strict about the idea of pets. I will not get any pets until I'm sure I am financially stable and save up at least $3,000 in a rainy day fund just in case of emergency health issues. I still do not have a dog or cat of my own and I'd like to keep it that way until I'm ready. Fortunately, I live with my other sister who does take care of their two dogs, and even sold her car to cover one of the dogs' $14,000 vet bills for their torn menisci in both knees. We constantly love on them and keep up with their training, and try to take them out for walks when the weather permits, although it's been too hot and also raining too often as of late, plus the mosquitoes have been relentless and even if they are on trifexus, we still don't want the dogs to have so many bug bites (they're very short coated). So I'm okay mentally now in terms of animals, but I still miss my soul-dog and I still occasionally feel the guilt of not doing more to save him.

@@carolinacoreas7716 Aww! Poor boy! I love dogs, but I prefer not owning one or two until I have a family. Right now, I’m content with staying with a couple who have dogs and visiting my parents who have two dogs. Don’t feel guilty. You tried your best with him and I’m sure he appreciated all that you did for him. It is heartbreaking to see dogs in pain and in their last moments. I still remember the first dog I had when I was a kid. Still remember her last days vividly. Still remember when we had to put her down. We were all there for her. But after that, the dogs we had later, only my dad brings them to get put down. I don’t live with them anymore. They had a wiener dog named Brandi. She lived to be 14 and was doing great for her age until she fell off the bed and hurt her hip. Then everything went downhill from there. She started going deaf and blind and would just stand in a spot and stare into space. She’d perk up every time I called her name, though, and when it was time to let her go, I couldn’t be there for her in her last moments. My dad told me she was scared when he brought her to the vets to be put down, and it broke my heart. Then our lab, Kisha, who was my baby, lived to be 12. She was fine, but while I was visiting, we left to go to a cousin’s wedding reception, and while we were gone, she kept throwing up all her food. When we came back, she could barely move. It was very hard seeing her like that. I couldn’t be there for her in her last moments either. I always feel guilty for not being with them, but I always hope they know that I do love them. Sorry, I’m crying just thinking about them…

EDITED for clarity. I was not the dog's previous owner. I own/operate a rescue/re-homing program that specializes in the LGD breeds. I re-homed this pup to his new farm. A lot of people think that an LDG is a nocturnal breed however that is not why they are heard barking a lot at night.. The LGDs that are out with their charges spend their time keeping predators away. Often times, the predators see that everything at a farm goes quiet and dark at night when people are not out an about. They will take advantage of this and try and steal livestock as a food source. As such, the LGDs bark a lot during the night if they sense any predators are in the area. Thank you for being so good with him. 🥰
