This Route Guide for road cyclists sets out from Girona and heads for the hills, taking in the astonishingly beautiful and dramatic landscape of the Susqueda reservoir. The 75km (46 miles) route is fairly challenging, with 700m (2,300 ft) of vertical ascent, some of it on pretty steep, although short, sections of road. There's plenty of opportunity to get warmed up on the flat run out from Girona to the town of Angles and the mountain village of Osor. Heading for the Susqueda Reservoir, things get a little Alpine and slightly wild, but the effort is rewarded with stunning landscapes and amazing views of the reservoir, the dam and steep wooded valleys. This route is a good illustration of how much variety of terrain is available to cyclists using Girona as a base as it heads for the volcanic Garrotxa region - which is a big contrast to the more benign landscape of the Gavarres and the Emporda areas. This is a great ride which offers a bit of everything.
