What NOT to Do in Girona, Spain
The Don'ts of Girona, Spain. A great day trip from Barcelona, Girona gets a lot of day trippers that enjoy the museums, the cathedral and taking in the whole ambiance of the city. If you are a Game of Thrones fan you will notice a lot of spots in the city that show up in the TV show, so keep your eyes open. They love their sardines and wine here, though it is not on the beach, it is still close enough to the Costa Brava to enjoy.

Last year I had taken the train to Girona and was waiting for a bus to get to my hotel about 2 hrs away in a coastal town. While waiting I met some locals who invented me to the bar to drink, and then convinced me to ditch my hotel and go to the town festival with them. I spent the night and will always be grateful for the lovely and welcoming people of Girona and neighboring Sal :)

It looks like you were there during Temps de Flors, which was the busiest time of the year for visitors when I lived in Girona. If people want a quieter trip, plan around this festival. Cant wait to visit Girona again, thanks for the video Mark.

The video was filmed while "Temps de flors" was taking place. That's why there's all the flowers and street decorations and so many people in the streets on a Sunday.

Great vid. Bummed we missed that you were in town. Recently moved here. Big fan of your channel. As a heads up, we learned G is pronounced as more of a J sound (from Catalan..like in the word "justice") rather than typical breathier Spanish g.

That’s a good idea, but spending only one day in Barcelona is way too little time. You will need maybe two or three days to get a good glimpse of the city, it has a lot of things to see. But if you only have one day, you can’t miss the Barri Gótic (the old town, with Santa Maria Del Mar cathedral as the main attraction) and do a small Gaudi route, with Casa Mila, Batllo, Parc Güell and Holy Family Basilica…as I say, a day can’t be enough ;)

Visited is April 2021 and actually found it warmer, since it was inland. Barcelona & the towns along the Costa Brava were much cooler (and more comfortable for me) since the cool breezes were coming from the water. Girona is also a good base for day trips to nearby towns from the bus station, behind the train station.

Yes I absolutely love this town. It’s so beautiful and the food was really great. Also the views from the wall in early March were amazing. Snow Capped Mountains and all the greenery I found just amazing. It was quiet and not overly crowded by tourists. It rained but I was ok with it. The cathedral’s was one of my favorite places to visit. The list goes on. However I did in counter a bad restaurant in a courtyard coming off the wall. The food was not at all good. It was by a library or school. Don’t go there. Yeah just don’t stop there. I did however have great wine, pastries,Gelato and food in this town. I actually experienced the best Gelato I’ve ever had here. Sorry Italy!!

In Spain we have many types of omelettes, not only the potato omelette (which by the way is not called Spanish omelette), so you can find aubergine omelette, spinach omelette, spinach and white bean omelette, courgette omelette, etc.

It's not pronounced "he-rona" but "Gee-rona", or even "je-rona", at least by the people who live here (I do). It's a great city to visit, especially out of season. Also worth mentioning that you can buy a train ticket for all the regional trains (these are "Rodalies" and "media distancies" not the expresses) for €20. This ticket will cover ALL trains in Catalunya (bar the expresses) for a 3 month period. So, even if you don't live here but intend to come back within that period, your ticket will still be valid, and there is no limit to the number of journeys you can make on it.

My son and I will be in Barcelona in July. I'm torn between doing Girona on our own or a tour that also includes Pals and palafrugel. As much as om not a fan of not having time for emptier streets, I don't want to miss the medieval village at Pals. Has anyone done a combo tour?
@balsera04

I worked at Costa Brava a while ago, Pals is really spectacular. And maybe you can go see the Roman remains in Ampuria Brava and take a coast tour, it’s just stunning.
@janewright315
@janewright315 Ай бұрын
@balsera04 that is awesome! Thanks for the reply. We historically do trips on our own but I was not sure if in this case an all in one tour may be good. It will bother me to not cover everything (and of course this never ends because there will always be another nook or cranny haha), but this is the end of a long trip and I thought it may be easier than planning a ton of transit. On our own we would likely not get to Pals
@balsera04
@balsera04 Ай бұрын
@@janewright315 I would recommend you to stay for some days at Costa Brava, and go to the beach if you want to, or do some daily excursions to Pals, or Cadaques (where Dali was born) . Barcelona needs at least a week, last time I was there I stayed for six days and missed lots of things.
@janewright315

@balsera04
@balsera04 Ай бұрын
@@janewright315 ok, it was someone else who would go for a day trip to Barna (Barcelona is also called Barna here in Spain). There are some things you can’t miss: the Barri Gótic (the oldest part of the city, with the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Mar), the Ramblas and Mercado de la Boqueria (you can do that in a day, between morning and evening). The Eixample, with Modernism buildings by Gaudi, and the Palau and Liceo de la Música, there are guided tours there, and Parc Güell, you should get there by bus. Also, Montjuic has some great views and it’s an interesting place to go, and of course take a tour through the port of Barcelona in a small boat, I suggest you to go at sunset, it’s gorgeous. Hope these suggestions are useful :)

Girona is certainly one of those destinations I'd like to visit someday, I always felt it was Spain's answer to Bath in the UK, a historical town that managed to maintain a long outmoded bath house, it's fascinating stuff! On the subject of nationality and history I did have a potentially sensitive question. If there's any Gironí in the comments how do you feel about the labels "Spanish" and "Catalonian"? If I ever found myself chatting with locals in the city is it a safer bet to ask whether you identify as one or the other, or should I stick with one over the other until corrected? I'm somewhat aware of Catalonia and it's cultural/political distinctness and I'd be a bit nervous casually bringing it up.
@Ilar-en7lg
@Ilar-en7lg 21 күн бұрын
First of all, Girona is not at all an answer to Bath in the Uk, I don't know what you're talking about. Girona has existed for many, many centuries, so it's not a copy of anything least of all the Uk (who the heck thought about the Uk centuries ago. Besides it's not Cataloniam, it's Catalan.

@@woltersworld There were a lot of people there that day because there was a festival called Temps de Flors (Flower Time), not because the city usually has so many tourists. That is also the reason why there were so many flowers even hanging in the streets, not because it is the usual decoration of the city. You should have informed yourself a bit better, because in the video you are recommending people to look up to see the flowers when they go to the city and that is not going to happen unless they go during that festival. Didn't you suspect that something strange was going on in the city that day with so many flowers in the street and so many people?
