Thank you for this fascinating post again, Navarre. The second interpretation with Baryshinokov, is my father's staging, directing and choreography, for ABT, he created arounf 1967/8, to world acclaim, along with his 'different approach' also to world acclaim, Swan Lake. David Blair, wasn't just a great danseur noble, he's often been forgotten about his amazing, this choreography too. He tragically died aged just 43 years, (three years after he retired at 40 years at the top, as he's wished) at Covent Garden, dancing Colas, in La Fille Mal Gardee, that Ashton created for him and the superb, much over shadowed as well, Nadia Nerina, as Lise, in 1960. He retired in 1973, dancing 'Fille' with the lovely Merle Park. Nerina decided to retire, due to Margot not to retire, and the crazy 'media circus' and well as the awful politics that came with the defection, of Rudi, in 1961. I thought all three of these dancers, and the different aspects they all bring, were just wonderful to see, thank you.

I adore the 1977 version. Their interpretation is pot on - her “dead” arms and his love/regret/exhaustion. The softness of his landings and the fluidity of the steps...

Baryshnikov is truly amazing, it is the best Albrecht variation I can think of - even though I love Bruhn and Vasiliev in that role too. What a treat it must have been to see this in a live performance, with La Fracci on top of that (my favorite Giselle ever). Polunin on a good day reminds me of him, with less elevation maybe, but a somewhat similar dark-ish energy and the same natural elegance.

@@pucapuca7385 But Baryshnikov combines this dark-ish energy with nnocence and tenderness to Giselle.

Lavrovsky's choreography is different from Ulanova's 1956 Giselle, the double tours are missing, but beautiful use of the upper body. Vogel is almost too "romantic" for me, his gestures are very broad, but his is without any doubt a romantic interpretation. Who would have guessed the roots of Baryshnikov's rise in elevation toward the end go so far back? But this detail and the theatrical fall on his back at 9:13 always marked his interpretation as a Romantic one for me (not necessarily the same as "romantic") You're right about the abandonment and self-destruction, he wants to die and doesn't beg for his life, he acknowledges Myrtha's power but that's all.

+Navarre Brixen What do you think of the brises? Lavrovsky does only one diagonal, very slowly, the others do two, Vogel seems more "gentle" in his approach.

+Navarre Brixen Going out on a limb... Vladimir Vasiliev was clearly one of the greatest dancers of the 20th Century... but I hate his Albrecht variation (he changed it a lot). The steps are horribly linked together, and the gestures are jerky and totally out of the realm of romantic era ballet. It looks like grafting Basilio from Don Q into Giselle and it's bizarre. The Bolshoi went slower and slower in the 70s to accompany bigger and bigger gymnastics and gestures. The arctic pacing of so many Russian ballet variations (Mariinsky and Bolshoi) is annoying and, IMO, often ruins the impact of the composer's intent.
