I have played this video many a time, because I think it’s really the only full Gisele with her. I did not realize how much I love her genius interpretation, and still one of the prettiest and most cinematic faces in the entire history of classical dance, easily. The way that she gives that first act solo to us and the way that she bows made me physically emotional. Her mad scene was chilling the way that she looked through him I just lost myself a little bit. Her second act epaulment was like she was a woman in a dream of a woman who died. Sylvie is upside down, laying down flat in attitude derrière, and her arms themselves are like a magic trick, the floatiest EVER. The legs are trailing behind like each note of music has a different perfect sculpture of music notes trapped inside of Sylvie Guillems body, trying to get out of their pink tights and satin shoe bondage. Her mime is minimal, for sure. And it’s so genius, because she knew (1), make it a movie for them. She’s pretty enough for a movie, so you really want to draw in. (2)She keeps the mime smaller, as well, to shrink herself. She doesn’t want to look like the lilac fairy stretching her arms to speak, when she’s a tall girl already. She plays The first act as if “I am a regular girl just like all the other girls but I simply delight in dancing and I really have the purest heart it’s very fragile “. Her hops on pointe were out of this world, and the ecarte’ after was over the moon. Highest of anyone ever, with the most bendy foot as well, and a school girl smile. Wholesome. Mad scene shook me, had to pay attention to barre for that bit. Again, second act was the most epaulment, floaty arms, and upside down I’ve ever seen. Prettiest feet in the entrechaquatre, for sure. Queen of the Wilis lovely legs and feet!! Sylvie, we LOOOOOOVE you.

To day dancers are in some aspect batter and not, but that is what we have today... classical evolution is in constant change. Was past batter it is hard to compare and is pure perversion...only you was younger...and now you are one old grumbler.

@@zazazebee merci pour le renseignement ! depuis j'ai découvert le site "memopera" que je vous conseille si vous ne le connaissez pas déjà, il recense toutes les représentations de l'Opéra de Paris, par oeuvres, interprétes (étoiles et premiers danseurs) ou années., C'est un outil très précieux pour faire des recherches. J'ai donc vu que Sylvie Guillem et Laurent Hilaire avait dansé Giselle effectivement en 1991 (le 2 mai) mais aussi pendant la saison 1999:2000 ! ça doit être 1991 vu leur jeunesse et les autres danseurs présents ...

Sinon depuis que j'avais posté cette question j'ai découvert le site "memopera" de l'Opéra de Paris, que vous connaissez peut--être déjà ? Il recense toutes les représentations par nom de danseurs étoiles ou premiers danseurs, dates ou oeuvre ! C'est une bible indispensable pour les amoureux de la danse à l'Opéra de Paris ! Giselle avec Sylvie Guillem et Laurent Hilaire a été donné en 90/91 mais aussi en 99/2000, mais je pense aussi que c'est 90/91 à cause des autres intervenants et de l'air juvénile de Sylvie et Laurent ! Edit : après vérification encore sur memopera, et compte tenu du fait que Hilarion me semble être dansé par Wilfrid Romoli, je penche maintenant plus sur l'année 2000, dites moi ce que vous en pensez ?

She plays first act almost like a tomboy.... so refreshing. BUT Also__ who's the ballerina in the peasant pas de deux? Such delicious wit, and such ease! Act 2, the camera-work is too weak, the atmosphee too harsh,stark, where is the detail?

It's strange that she (or the choreograph in charge of this version) changes some very well known steps in the 2nd act, like the first grand penché in première arabesque, when Albrecht is crying head in hand. And some other things like the sisonnes with crossed bent legs. Maybe she doesn't "like" them, but It's a score you have to respect. Maybe she had an injury and could not perform some steps.

i think the version the paris opera ballet has always danced was this choreography, but i may be wrong from what i know the coralli version has been the norm here.. from what u r saying, would that mean that in this recording, even his choreography has been changed then?? id love to know (i havent seen giselle in paris myself, as i have only seen recordings of other companies, even longer excerpts of variations seem rare to find for paris, compared to footage of other companies, so i might be ill-informed/assuming wrongly)

@@melowlw8638 In the 70's we had the Alicia Alonso version. In 1985, there was the Mary Skeaping version. In 1990-96 we had the Patrice Bart and Génia Polyakov version, now they say we have theJean Coralli et Jules Perrot.

Вообще-то Альберт (или Альбрехт) и не принц вовсе, а лишь граф...))) Либретто надо знать! Как по мне, лучшая "Жизель" всех времён и народов - в исполнении Алессандры Ферри и Михаила Барышникова. Сильви Гиллем из-за своей спортивности больше нравится в модерне. А лучший для неё партнер что в классике, что в модерне действительно Лоран Илер - он единственный рядом с ней не пропадает и остается видимым. Оба - любимые ученики (как они сами себя называли - "птенцы") Рудольфа Нуреева. Это всё - давние дела... Но искусство вечно. Какие же мы счастливцы, что у нас есть интернет!
