'The Humbler' shows how its done.
Danny was on tour and hitting the TV stations before each concert. This clip is from "Much Music"'s Toronto studio. MM is Canada's MTV.
Sorry Gatton fans, I don't have any more TV footage, nor do I have any material from the concert that followed.
RIP Danny and Elvis.

@gwmerr -I met Danny as well at a guitar seminar and you are right-he was a nice guy.I have never forgotten this one guy asking Danny to sign his jean jacket and handing him a magic marker.I figured he'd just quickly scribble something down but no-Danny was a perfectionist. He proceeded to take about 15 minutes to do his whole name in block lettering with 3D shadowing techniques etc. What a trip.It totally blew that guy's mind and I'm sure he treasures that jacket to this day.

I was lucky enough to get to know Danny over 4 months in 1979 when he took on some guitar students. Danny was a "down to earth " guy and his unbelievable talent never went to his head. He was called "The Humbler" but he was humble in his manner and just a good hearted soul. He really gave me the ability to break free of bounds I had accepted to the guitar and although I never excelled beyond a journeyman player I know he made a difference for me.

@@georgefeist8190 I saw him in Boston which I believe was the last show of the tour. I had NO idea who he was. I went with a friend who was the singer in a rockabilly trio I was in. As good as he and the band was on the Berkeley recording, the Boston show was amazing. I'd always imagined there was some player out there doing the kind of stuff he did and finally that night I got to see it. I was about 10' from the stage looking at his Tele on the stand before the show thinking "Very cool. This might be good." Saw him two more times after that. Nobody ever got more music out of one guitar. Nobody.

Danny was just gifted, from God! He had it BIG TIME. However he was badly depressed, which led to his death. I just wish he would have gotten himself some help, so he wouldn't do that to himself and those that loved him. His guitar playing was up there amongst the greatest of all time. Who can judge? Not me! But, I'll say this, the man was gifted and brilliant, on that telecaster of his. God Bless the memory & soul of Danny Gatton. 🎶🎶🎸

Danny has been my number one guitarist ever since I first heard him play. The way he effortlessly demonstrates his technique at the beginning of this clip is my favourite bit of the whole thing. I could watch him play unaccompanied for hours - without the assistance of his pretty average band - or was it just that he was so great he made other musicians sound ordinary?

@ncbloom Early 50s with a hollow spot under the chrome cover behind the bridge. That cover is on when he was not using a remote control box for an echoplex and some other effects that had controls in a box that sat in the routed spot under the chrome cover on his usual Tele. I think it was a 53. Danny gave Roy Buchanan a 50s blond Tele.. These two also shared a room in the DC area. Imaging Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton kicking it together. Now they are both gone by their own choice. RIP guys!

I remember when Much Music started broadcasting Stateside in the mid 90's, the line I kept hearing was, "It's like MTV, only they play videos". In fact, I remember MM's promos emphasized the fact that they didn't air reality shows, cartoons, game shows or any of the other crap MTV had on at the time. Unfortunately, MM shut down their US feed about 10 years ago, so who knows what they show now.

That's just from the finish being worn off the fingerboard. You play any guitar enough and that will happen. You can tell which portions of the neck got used the most. It's especially noticeable with guitarists who sweat a lot. Everyone always assumed Rory Gallagher beat the hell out of his Strat, but the finish wore away because he had a rare blood type that caused his sweat to have a high acid content, plus he was one of those guys who was on the road constantly, playing 2 or 3 hours a night.

Roy and Danny were theoretically friends, but it was kinda weird. Danny said once that Roy used to put on disguises when he went to see Danny play because Roy believed that Danny held out on his "good" licks because he thought Roy would steal them. Roy also apparently hired away a couple musicians that Danny liked playing with, apparently for the same reason, because Roy was a bit paranoid about Danny stealing his thunder or whatever.

Danny has got a lot in common with the great Django Reinhardt both were totally at one with the guitar both had the otherworldly gift of playing anything that came into their head regardless of how difficult or fast. And both were so good they lost interest in the guitar Danny would rather fix up old cars and Django took up painting
