Truth is that Danny Gatton was the greatest guitar player to ever live.Not the most popular but technically and naturally the best.

Gatton could literally play anything. Sometimes in the same song. Blues to jazz to country to rockabilly. Seamless. What a master.

All I have to say is that I was very lucky that I got to see him about a dozen times in small clubs in and around DC. He did what he did masterfully and he was as great as anyone I've ever seen, and I'm comparing him to the well known icons that almost everyone knows or has heard of.

There was 2 legends on that stage, Buddy Emmons is the other, he was one of the top Nashville session steel players. Both these guys were a head of their time. Danny still one of my favorite pickers ever. Buddy did not just play, he improved the instrument itself to become what modern steel guitar are today.

I was at that show and another he played with Lenny Breau, both at Cellar Door. Little did I know then that years later I would work with Danny in the studio on the Johnny Seaton album Uptown and then many years later as the mastering engineer on Danny's and Joey DeFrancesco's album called Relentless. I had been a working musician for decades at that point, but I remember walking out of the studio after they finished laying down their tracks thinking "gee, I wish I could play a musical instrument!" 😂 The best thing about working with Danny was that we became friends. I will never forget him. RIP

The "Thing" on his LP he called "The Magic Dingus Box". It was a remove control for effects-they may have been built into the box too, not sure. He got that idea from Les Paul who had "The Paulverizer" on his LP in the 50's.

No matter how great you are, keeping it simple is what sells, because people can remember and replay the song in their head .Danny was so incredible he couldn't keep it simple . Couple this with his love of his homelife which prohibited his touring and thus recording contracts and he was in a vicious circle that resulted in his suicide.

When you were discussing in the video that you couldn't tell if the sound was Danny's picking or a delay effect, I'm not sure either but Danny was certainly capable of double picking a faux delay sound. There is a great old Danny Gatton guitar instruction on KZbin where he demonstrates said picking for "When your echo gadget goes on the fritz". Danny was a monster musician and I'm happy for you that you've now heard of him.

Danny had an edge on most guitarists. He had perfect pitch and if he could think of it, he could instantly play it. Now for the surprise..... He'd rather work on his Hot Rod Cars than play guitar. There's not much to say about Buddy Emmons. He could play any music genre with ease.

That is called his "Magic Dingus Box" it controlled effects, stage lights, I think possibly a Leslie but not sure on that, he had it where he could switch it from one guitar to another, self built, but people were claiming that was a big part of his sound so he quit using it and just plugged into his amp. He is known for Tele's, there is a Fender Danny Gatton signature tele that was one of their best selling artist models. His guitar tech Joe Barden invented the single coil size humbuckers using Danny as his test subject and that Tele used those pups, they are still regarded as some of the best pups out there I've had a few in various guitars, very hot and clean and not for beginners because they pick up everything. He did a half of an Austin City Limits that is def worth watching, thought about requesting that one instead but it's 25 ish minutes thought that might be too long.
@Stretchgood3667 ай бұрын
He plays all styles, jazz, rockabilly, blues etc. said he always fell back on jazz because it always paid the bills, he is probably known for his rockabilly though as his famous The Humbler bootleg was all rockabilly, there is a documentary called The Humbler making the indi movie rounds now.

This is why Roy Buchannan comparisons are ridiculous. Danny was also a great straight up jazz player. He was heavily influenced by Les Paul. And also played Gibson guitars from the beginning to the end, not just the Telecaster.

I would check the "Relentless" album with Joey DeFrancesco. Also Danny was heavily influenced by Lenny Breau. See "One for Lenny" on the "New York Stories " LP. I am pretty sure Danny would put Lenny Breau above all others.
