Spectaculair! As a clarinetist, I've respect for the solist. I think it's great to have such an honor to play Artie Shaw. Very nice, great performance and respect for the last note!

Excellent Job!!! My friend here in the U.S. is playing this for a concerto competition for The University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble, conducted by Maestro Thomas V. Fraschillo. You may have heard of him? He's pretty big over here in the "band world". He took a group of students to Rome last summer, and we played with Fulvio Creux and Carlo Calcagnini in the Italian Army Band (La banda dell'esercito). I will be going again this summer, and hope to see other bands in Italy.

This was played very nicely, much lighter than some of the other, heavier performances on youtube. The soloist is outstanding, well done! But the band wasn't following the soloist OR the conductor when the soloist was playing softer and the conductor wanted them to decresc. around 3:20. This was very easy and lovely to listen to, thank you for posting! :) Excellent, bravo.

Artie Shaw was one great musician & I always liked his tunes incl, jealously, Stardust, Frennise & other great tunes. I've played the old standards for yrs i.e. moonglow, whats new, lazy river, misty, hello foll G, chicago, new york new york, it had to be you, mainly on piano but I can play guitar, tenor Banjo, upright bass & Tenor Sax. I mainly am a pianist but learned these extra instruments just in case someone didn't show up for a dance job & I would fill in alternating on whatever instrument was needed. Joe G. Bowen

I liked this interpretation, as well as the improv solo trumpet player in the middle of the obviously classical concert band... I also liked how the clarinetist, obviously trained, included many jazz styles...including an excellent vibrato...much in the way Shaw was famous for.

The real fun is getting to that note....chromatically from the high G! The last note is a C. I usually use this fingering: Thumb, 1/2-hole L1, R1, Eb vent. I highly recommend Ridenour's "Clarinet Fingerings" for altissimo fingerings. The book has multiple fingerings listed for all the altissimo notes, as there are many different ones with varying results. There are comments for most of the fingerings.

well done. I play the clarinet... and I love this piece. I swear, in some parts, it is difficult to tell between you and shaw. that said, some parts you could. his glisses were just unbeatable. and, also, your band... it was iffy. you were awesome, but I think that band could have been better... and the drummer can't beat buddy rich. anyhow, great! it was a pleasure to listen to.

What an intriguing arrangement. This soloist is a fine musician but his performance is too soft. Artie Shaw really pressurized the clarinet and you can hear his fingers popping on the holes. He used an edgy loud tone unlike classically trained players. Also I really miss the Trombone entrance at '5:30 in this recording. Bugged me. The high note at the end was great.

Decent job, but way too rigid for Artie Shaw. If anyone watching this is able to, find a recording of Todd Kerstetter from KSU playing this. By far the best I have ever heard anyone do this. It's not on youtube, but I'm sure you can find an mp3 of it somewhere online.

I believe that this guy has a great sound and did a great job playing this piece, bravo for him!... But, for me, is not the best performance... It's performed like a classic concert, it should be more like the 40s and 50s, with more swing and enjoying it a lot more, improvising and making some crazy things while you play the melody... Shaw wrote it to be played that way.
@joeschmo133210 жыл бұрын
Great job, very good clarinet sound :-) The band would have played better without that conductor!! he jumped off the conductors stand as if HE was the one that played the solo.
@Tech50216 жыл бұрын
Hehehe... he's not used to swingie pieces like... I think he's sound better if this were a classical piece. His tone just doesn't suit this kind of music. Don't get me wrong though, he played this piece beutifully!

It's great clarinet work, but why is the drummer playing 1 and 3 so out of proportion? odd. doesn't really work. actually sounds like an "island" beat sometimes. Ietter listen to some Krupa, Ray McKinley, Jo Jones, Sid Catlett, Dave Tough, Buddy Rich, Chick Webb, et al!!
