No one tells a tale better than Maugham ,& this gentleman delivers the stories brilliantly. Some readers grate on ones nerves but this one is soothing & convincing . ❤

Excellent. Don't expect a "happily ever after" story from Maugham. He relates real human tragedy like no one else.

Maugham’s exceptional genius read by a disembodied digitizer voice deadens and degrades the human mind, yet I cannot stop listening for fear I will miss hearing another wonderful story.

"Disembodied digitizer". What's that ? A microphone to my ears. This has a strange rhythm but it's a human actor

Ridiculous comment! It’s definitely a human voice. Actually it’s read by the actor, Alex Jennings, and is part of the BBC’s Radio Collection.
@miarencrowsdaughter64347 ай бұрын
@@davidland1212 This one isn't Jennings. Jennings wouldn't read out 'asterisk asterisk asterisk' as other recordings with this voice on this channel have had.' (Also, I listened to the Jennings recording earlier this week on a different channel. Totally different tonal qualities.)

I've listened by now to this voice bot reading more than a dozen stories, probably more like two or three dozen, and I've got a trick for keeping it from being too distracting. I'm familiar enough with Maugham's writing that as the bot speaks I can see the text in my mind's eye even if I don't know the story. I even know more or less how he'd punctuate it. That way I can focus on the story not the voice.

KZbin must hate this channel. I think there are 15 or 20 commercials, usually two per interruption. The strategy is clearly to break it up so badly that the listener can't ever settle into it. What a user-hostile medium.

@dontaylor7315 I'm lucky in some way. I don't have an ad blocker but get little or no ads on this channel. Great story. I agree with all the anti-bot comments. But I do so enjoy listening to the stories.

User- hostile such an appropriate term for the idiotic adverts selling windows/rentals / retirement homes- all sorts of listeners included! I am prepared to put up with such annoyances in exchange of my enjoyment of listening and enjoying such beautifully structured stories. Each character different, descriptive of such a wide range of humans. I wonder how gregarious SM must have been to have met some or all of the characters included in his stories.
@dontaylor73156 ай бұрын
@@अस्मिरीति He was well-traveled and I bet that as a writer he cultivated conversation with all sorts of people because you may never know what the other person's story is unless you can draw them out. I imagine Maugham saw the whole world as material.

So what? 😀 it is the normal human British condition. Especially in Maughm’s time Something you have to accept inside a Maughm short story.
