I’ve found myself leaning towards this style of practice much more recently. For a long time I’d try to divide up my time and set timers for different exercises, and it felt like I was just playing to get to the end of the time limit. It’s so much easier for me to just sit and hyper-fixate on one lick/exercise/song until I am satisfied or until i’m not getting anything out of it anymore.

What helped me a lot lately, is, not to write down my goals before the session. What I do now, is, that I practice a song, a lick or a ear-training piece (Final Fantasy V for example, because that contains songs, sometimes only a minute) and than write down, what I have learned from that song, lick after playing and what kept my attention etc. In this way I am sure, that I combine playing and practicing. A day later, I recapture what was interesting for me and use it for a creative, own idea, which needs to be recorded (!) to see, if the idea is cohesive - doesn't matter how long the idea is.

Very matter of factly, and sensible inputs about playing and having fun, rather than mundane practising. Thanks so much.

I totally feel that for me exactly what I had to do to finally be able to sweep pick lol or thump I just dedicated whole days to it I also was that person who to be able to play at high speeds just had my guitar on me 24/7 for a couple years of always having a guitar . While watching tv while eating while on the toilet while in the car I always had a guitar an a metronome and just started slow until I could tremolo pick as fast as I cared about being able to play lol. That’s obviously a little extreme but thats what I did and I didn’t even focus on the left hand the whole time it was all just building up my right hand. To this day before I start trying to do anything I sit with my guitar and just focus only on my right hand until it feels warmed up then I start adding my left hand.

I only started learning how to play the guitar about five weeks ago & I'm documenting my entire journey on here so watching this was super motivational.

I recently started learning traids and the scale shapes for each inversion because I can't freely move around eventhough I know where the root 3rd and fifths are located at It's so time consuming that' I no more have the time to learn licks or riffs

Do you have any videos on Tosin Abasi's thumping technique? I wasn't able to find one.. If ya don't, would you consider making one?

i might do one but there's already so many good ones around

I get what your saying but i think its easy for exceptionally talented people like you for many things to come narurally, especially technical difficulties. What about us mere mortals. I don't know but if i dont work on each technique in detail everyday, i dont think ill make any substantial progress cause remember im the guy with no special talent and had to work his as off for everything. Just my personal opinion though. ❤

Your point invalidates all the hard work you don't see a person doing by slapping the bullshit tag of 'talent' on top of it. If you feel things come naturally to him its because he put in the work prior to showing all this to you.

@@benalex7472 I was gonna say the same. I was naturally "talented" on the guitar, i never really had that awkward stage where i couldn't play notes properly, but it took me many years to actually get on a professional level. My "talent" is mainly "hard work & taste + time"
