I have known the band since Tear Gas days (pre-Alex). After one gig in Liverpool, they were staying at the hotel where I was working as a chef. We had a post-gig bash then I stayed over as I was working at 6am. I cooked their breakfast then went over to see if they were ok. I hadnt told them I was working there and they were blown away! They wrote the song for me on the next album. I still havent recovered 32 years on.

It is very clear that this is in fact very much an anti-war song and a bloody brilliant one at that. It hints of the deep state behind the scenes cooking up the "stew" which we eat up without thinking who made it and what is in it. It seems clear that the phrase "give my compliments to the chef" is metaphorical albeit very rightly highly sarcastic acknowledgement of the deceptive and evil puppet masters playing us all off against each other while they profit from the resulting conflicts.

Often dismissed as theatrical glam rock, this is progressive jazz rock by a band who never really got the plaudits or sales figures they deserved. When I saw them/him it was when he was “building things”, he was building things in the front of the stage and by the end was standing on top of a pyramid performing while the band was on stage being their great combo of musicians; and it was a striking, brilliant and perfect prologue to John Cale when he was “Ready for War” and Deerfrance was with him; this was also during one of his PPE face mask orderly period of stage dress. Man, that was a night of musical hero worship. I hope I have the lineup correct as there was a stream of touring bands at their peak when Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom was nonstop excellence in time and place.
