What I've learned from my livestreams online, is that there is most definitely a teenage market for model kits. They just don't go to model shows as they don't find them engaging. Models are manufactured abs sold based on market research, rights to produce replicas, abs price point. There's lots of things to consider. I'd love a new 1/48 jaguar or tornado, but i was much jasper to see a really good sea king. Equally, I've much rather someone produce a newly tooled 1/24 or 1/12 ford Sierra cosworth rs 500

A new Halifax, would surely sell. I know a lot of people including myself would love to see a Stirling. Quite right, the target audience is no longer teenagers. I teach in a large secondary school, and there is almost no interest shown in model kits. Attendees at a model show I organize each year are 40 plus age group, almost all men. They buy kits for the stash as well as for building. Half the kits I buy are simply to gratify the conumer/collector in me. Every now and again, I'll make one.

Ok, Peter I see your point on model shops. Hobby shops are few and far between in The western half of Kansas. Hobby Lobby used to sell airfix, but not anymore. Now, for myself and the isolated hobbyist who must buy online or not get anything at all, I have to pay shipping on top of the price of a kit. I hope all of you realize that I have a limited income and it's not good that amazon is screwing up every delivery that they make. Kansas is a huge state , 300 miles wide and 400 miles long. At the Telford when Airfix announced the 1/24 Hellcat, they were filming for the "Hornby Model World Show", and they did a vox-pops and asked some people "what are you hoping to see" just before the big announcement to build up tension. *Nobody* said "I want to see a 1/24 Hellcat...." Everybody asked said the _exact_ _same_ _thing_ (I know, I was one of the guys asked who appeared in the broadcast show!), and we all said "I want to see a new Vulcan". I really liked the idea of future what could have been aircraft from the Luftwaffe had the war lasted a couple more years and in scales bigger than 1/72. Good subject Peter. I have to add my vote for a 1/48 SEPECAT Jaguar…. It’s a no brainier. I also think Airfix could help themselves by re-realising the 1/48 Sea Vixen and Westland Merlin HC.3 both kits very hard to find these days. I have also requested that Airfix revisit the 1/48 English Electric Lightning and Canberra. Both could do with an updated tooling in my opinion. In addition I would also say we have a gapping hole for a 1/72 Hadley Page Halifax. All we have is the 1960’s tooled Airfix kit. The Matchbox kit also reboxed by Revell and Revell’s own recently tooled kits which are also currently very hard to find. Also I’m confused why Tamiya have not followed up on the 1/48 F-4B Phantom…. Still no C, D version..?? And again why have the 32nd releases dried up..?? They could carry on with the P-47, 109,190, Ki-61 Hein, Hurricane, Typhoon. Enjoy your content Peter. Keep up the good work and enjoy Telford.

Enjoyed your rant.My main issue with it is this , regarding the notion that Airfix concentrate on selling to model shops rather than selling directly to customers. Who would they supply ? I don’t know about England, but here in Scotland I can count the number of traditional model shops I am aware of on the fingers of one hand and that is in the whole of the country not just where I live. At one time there was at least one model shop in every big town and in some of the smaller ones as well. But the rot set in ,in 2001 when Beatties hit the buffers. Over time since then the majority have closed down for economic reasons or redevelopment issues. As for buying kits on line, I hadn’t bought any Airfix kits for a number of years until September this year, probably all the Airfix kits I have bought this year have come in for criticism from the “Rivet Counters” but I am happy with what I have bought and the price I paid for them. That doesn’t mean there are not reasons to be concerned about where Airfix is headed. If you look at their website and the number of kits that are listed but are out of stock and have been out of stock for sometime and how old some of kits that they have available ,it does suggest that there are problems. As for new kits virtually all their current range of German WWII aircraft in 1/72 and 1/48 scale are past their use by date. Regarding kits I would like to see a Westland Wyvern and a Supermarine Spiteful or Seafang in 1/48. A Republic Thunderbolt P-47 in any scale, a P-39 Airacobra in any scale. Moving on to wishful thinking a Messerschmitt Bf 110 and a Westland Whirlwind fighter in 1/48 scale would be welcome.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab That is a real shame. In the day I enjoyed visiting model shops every opportunity that I got. I am retired, but when I was working I travelled a fair bit and if I had some spare time where ever I was I would look for the local model shop.At one time there was six shops within a twelve mile radius of where I live, now they are all gone.Wonderland Models in Edinburgh are still on the go, and there are a couple of others at the other side of the city. There is a Hobbycraft in Glasgow but I haven't been in there since I retired and the last time I visited, their entire stock of plastic kits appeared to be a dosen assorted kits sitting on the end of a shelf gathering dust. Andy, who has the Novice Modelling and the Midlife Crisis channel perhaps summed up part of the reason for the demise of the model shop, when he explained how one day at work a younger colleague had asked him what he was doing at the weekend, Andy replied saying he was building a Spitfire, to which his work colleague replied "What is a Spitfire". More good quality GA designs would be a breath of fresh air. I have an ancient Airfix HP 42 and a Rotodyne - crude kits, but astounding aircraft. It's been nice to see some new things like the recent Junkers J13 kits, but so rare. There is much more variety in the simple short run kit market, easy to see why, but there it is.

On the topic of Model shops going out of business through lack of support. I’m guilty of using Amazon for 90% of my kits, because of the next day delivery, if you’re a prime member+ free delivery. The other 10% I purchase from model shop websites. Usually Wonderland of Edinburgh, yes they’re not the cheapest, but they deliver with in 2/3 days. And they are extremely well packaged. Can’t say that about Amazon. The packaging quality can be very erratic. For example. I’ve just took delivery of the Airfix Cromwell MK VI 1/35 scale from Amazon. It arrived without any packaging, the address label stuck on the front of the box partly covering the artwork and the box taped shut with the ubiquitous Amazon tape. 😮

Hi Peter, I thought maybe my advice might be of some use considering I am 18 making me a better candidate for the future of these companies. I was the first to message airfix back in 2020 regarding their building a Jaguar when they made an Instagram post regarding what kits people would like to be released. Since then every year I have still commented without a reply which has been a disappointment. I would like to see them do a 1:48 Westland Lysander as the Eduard/Gavia kit is pants and I think it would fit their product range really nicely. I would also like them to do a Martin Baker MB.5 however I would not expect this one to be made as it seems to niche for their range and can see it flopping within the first year. I completely agree about either ICM or Eduard making a new Bf-110 as that is needed. I would not say I am a bad modeller however I do not want to have to fight a kit to put it together, I would prefer a kit to have less detail but fit well and look like the subject than it be super detailed and not fit. I find the Gannet a hard kit to talk about because on one hand it looks really good but on the other hand I do not have any interest in the aircraft nor the time period so why would I buy it 🤔.

I totally agree with the point here! Airfix asks us what kits we want to see, and it builds up this real excitement in the community. But then they seem to ignore the feedback-mine included! I've personally suggested a few kits on social media that got a lot of support from other fans, and it feels a bit disheartening when those ideas go unacknowledged. It would make such a difference if Airfix actually responded to popular suggestions and showed us they’re listening. I think they’d get even more support from the community by following through on the ideas they’re inviting. Hopefully, they’ll start paying more attention to their loyal fans!

Just another thought I had re sales. The auto industry in the UK appeared to bring in young university kids to make changes within the sale/showrooms and the first customers they abandoned were the loyal customers to their brands. Out went the smaller show rooms in smaller towns up and down the country because they thought customers would prefer a nice huge showroom on the out skirts of a city where they could travel 25 plus miles to get to a show room to buy sell or to get their cars serviced . The one big show room would save money rather than smaller franchises despite the fact that these smaller franchises had loyal customers . Their actions proved that there were no rewards for loyalty to their brands nor were there any ears to listen to customer feed back.

A long but a very necessary speech, thanks a lot Pete.. From the Finnish perspective, the following should be done: 1:48 Brewster 239, Morane 460, JU88 A-4 1/72 a decent and updated version. MIG-21-F13 .Gnat F1 in 1:48, VL Myrsky in 1:48, Blenheim 1:48 Longnose From the Global perspective: the early Mustangs in 1.48 with Allison engines, Whirlwind in both scales, FIAT G50, F-84G Thunderjet, Jaguar, Mirage etc The Hobby Boss Easy Assembly kits in 1:72 are cheap and have a good range of WW2 kits, but extending it to the Cold War is also a great idea, those easy build kits are an easy way to build fast and If painted carefully they look just great (at least for my eyes) If possible, Airfix should do those as well to introduce people back to this hobby. The price of the models are high, because they contain to many parts and complicated build phases. That is also a major issue for the industry, to make profits. Tamiya has released their old models at cheap prices and the are just fine for a re-entry to this marvelous hobby. The quality of the older kits are just fine,

Great video Peter. I'm in the USA. I've only built one Airfix model, their snap Jeep Gladiator. I painted it and made custom decals for it. I thought it was a good kit and plan on building another one. I also have their newer DB5. I build primarily cars and scifi models which are not really Airfix's strong suit. I would like to build some of their 1/24 scale plane kits - even though most of the molds are older. I agree with the kits you suggested about Tamiya - good picks. Revell makes so much money off Monogram's older molds - especially their 1/24 car kits and the 1/48 planes like the B24 - B25 -B17 - B29 etc. Since I rarely build an aircraft model it's difficult for me to comment on Airfix. Although I think of them as a model company that specializes in aircraft kits.

And would love to see a re-release of the 1/48 English Electric Lightning and Sea Vixen. I’d buy two of each of the re-releases (and hope that the notorious airfix quality control issues had not effected the kits). Also agree ‘re Alvis Saracen - and they could then release the related Saladin and Stalwart in subsequent years. My personal wishlist (but they are niche items really, I would not expect them to be big sellers): - Boeing Sea Knight in 1/48 but in New York Airways civilian livery (as in the movie Coogans Bluff). I keep hoping that Academy will release a civilian scheme - but they never do. - The S.S United States in 1/400 or 1/600 (sad to report that this beautiful ship is due to be scuttled very soon). - Rolls Royce armoured car in 1/24 scale (or better yet, 1/16). Anyhow it has been, as always, a very enjoyable time spent in your company. As a Canadian modeller, there are 2 particular kits that are missing from my life- the DeHavilland Dash-8 (Hobbycraft put a crappy one out in the 80s) and the DeHavilland DHC-5 Buffalo. There was a really shite resin kit of this from Brazil, I don't wish it on anyone, but I have built 2 for a friend. Kinetic is releasing a new CT-114 Tutor, which I'm drooling over... the Tutor is used by the Snowbirds aerobatic team, and I lived in Moose Jaw as a kid so I grew up loving it. Again, Hobbycrap had put a kit out, but yeah... no wonder the company went tits-up. As for the Sea King- I picked one up, good kit, but the Westland mods really get in the way for those of us that want to use it for building a King from elsewhere... I'm in the middle of converting mine to a Canadian bird, having worked on the real thing. Already exhausted from the work, but it'll look better than the Hasegawa units I have... Once I'm done, with my luck, they'll release an "Americanized" variant.

Re Tamiya armored range. I have noticed that all the new releases including the 1:48 tanks, the tracks are now molded in plastic which you have to glue onto the wheels. I realize "SERIOUS" model makers presumably think this is all great because they can replicate the exact sag etc etc I personally find it a royal pain in the bum. My simple request is that Tamiya provide "old school" flexible tracks like in the good 'ol days AS WELL so we at least we have a choice. Given that they presumably still have the original molds I can't see this as a big ask.I have the Airfix British M3 Stuart Honey and it comes with BOTH flexible and hard tracks so thumbs up to them for that one.I notice the Revell 1:72 tank range also come with glue on plastic tracks and I'm just not buying them unless they do the same. Sorry I know I'm being ultra fussy about this but I refuse to believe I am literally the ONLY model maker in the World who is bothered by this. Totally agree with you about providing a diorama base for small scale armour. Matchbox did this decades ago- it makes so much sense. So far all the Revell ex Matchbox kits have included the figures including the Puma you referred to. Re kits I really want- i REALLY want a 1:76/1:72 model kit of the M3 Stuart Honey. I am 99% sure there is currently no commercially available kit available. Revell appeared to have the Matchbox molds but "cancelled" whatever that means.Either they stopped making the kit or they never started in which case where are thje molds now I wonder. Also love to see a 1:76/1:72 kit for the PZKpfw I Ausf- I have noticed there are several kits available in 1:35 scale including a recent Tamiya one so there is clearly an interest there.

Another worthy topic, Peter. I am reminded by the inside joke from, Star Trek O.S. were conduit and pipes on the ship had the abbreviation GNDN printed on some of them meaning; Goes Nowhere Does Nothing. This term sums up completed, scale models well. Us older guys and a few gals returning to the hobby after decades away, that take it seriously compared to when we were kids have higher expectations for new kits. Manufacturers may not have recognized this fully as we are a fairly recent demographic. I returned in 2018 and know many 55-65 that have been back in the hobby for less than seven years. As you point out with the wrist watch, scale models are bought out of the 'desire' to own a representation of a subject. The hopeful enjoyment of construction is secondary. For our generation, TV movies and war films gave us a lot of incentive to desire a copy of a, historical, sci fi or fantasy object. It is within the realm of possibility that new kits will be of another technical advancement soon that is more revolutionary than what has been an evolution in the last fifteen years. There may be new methods that will not require expensive casting metal molds and improvements that are worth waiting until they can be adapted for use by kit manufacturers from other industries. The ideal future would be to have an online build a kit. Any documented subject, for example all WW2 fighters with a database could be chosen in any scale, not just the ones we have now. A cabinet that is three millimeters too small for a 1/32 Mosquito won't do but a 1/34 will fit nicely.' Part number, detail and skill levels, specific features of the aircraft, figures and markings of historical subjects. Multi position stands for in flight display. Not only would you get exactly what you wanted but the price of a build would be a lot less while giving product providers appropriate profit. Currently I have to order many upgrades from around the world for mediocre kits that have no alternative. New tool kits I would like to see: Airfix; 1/24 Hurricane, 1/24 Corsair, 1/24 Bf109, 1/24 Skyraider (won't happen but I would like) Tamiya; A revised or new tool, 1/32 F-4E, EJ. It is strange there was an end of production of the existing kits during the final farewell year of the JASDF and many Phantom IIs around the world. Not a fan of HK and wished they did not do as many of the twin engine WW2 aircraft kits. Tamiya would be more expensive but so much better if they offered them.

The Hornby TV series told you all you needed to know about why they are not successful. Excellent designers with a passion for the subject but a largely amateur and inexperienced management team. You're right Peter about Airfix's choices - even back with their last Canberra releases, there are dozens more different releases they could have made over a 5-10 year period to appeal to a very wide audience. And how many times do people have to shout Jaguar before they listen. Airfix should be the go to manufacturer for modern RAF subjects.

I'm a niche modeler, I reckon most are the same to one degree or another. My niche happens to be the 1950s. Mikr Mir produced an XB-51, so maybe miracles do happen. But would it be much of a stretch to do a Martin P4M-2Q Mercator as their next miracle? For my money, if Airfix might contemplate updating molds, their F4D Skyray and F-86D Dog Sabre would be a good start. I'd be in crowd ready grab a Scimitar, should they ever go there. Or an F-80 and T-33. Or an F-100? How did Trumpeter manage to flog that kit? Working with kits nearly as old as I am is okay with me, but some of them are getting kinda scarce. Roden made a very nice AJ-1 but, if you want an AJ-2 or-2P, you're gonna have to find a Rare Planes vacuform kit. Speaking of ancient, and speaking Rare Planes, how about a YB-17 or a C-121 Constellation? For a decent Connie, you to cough a small fortune the horrible Heller kit and a ton of aftermarket correction stuff. Great content Peter, I made some notes whilst watching, Farnborough 50s and 60s interesting and unique designs, USAF “X” Series Research Aircraft, (X15, my favourite), 1/24? scale Me 163, 1/35 scale AW159 (Fully Armed) Wildcat, there was one at RIAT this year, static. Probably license issues but anything from Gerry Anderson ie, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Space 1999 etc, just thoughts really……but please, no more Spitfires, also does anybody do a 3D print your own design pc program, it wouldn’t be for me, but younger generations may be interested, keep up the great work Peter, 10/10 from me👍

Hello Peter: Your comments on Airfix are music to my ears, although I must disagree with you on their Gannet release (I am deep into my own build and am delighted to have such an unusual model available). You are right that Airfix's core market is over 45 British men, most of whom saw many British cold war subjects flying at airshows. So, like me, they have an emotional and nostalgic attachment to these aircraft (I am pretty much exclusively a British Cold War aircraft modeler). I very much agree with you about the need for a new Sepecat Jaguar (loads of neat color schemes), Tornado, and Eurofighter in both scales. To be fair, Airfix have done some great Cold War British aircraft in recent years: the three V-bombers, Buccaneer in both scales, plus Lightning, Sea-Vixen, Meteor, Gnat, Chipmunk, Javelin, Hunter, Sabre, Vampire, Merlin, Lynx, Sea King in 48. They have also produced good 72 versions of the Phantom, Harrier, Vampire (two-seat), JP, and Meteor (the only newish Airfix kit I struggled with). Along with the kits you mentioned, a 48 scale Phantom, Scimitar, and Sea Venom would be welcome, as well as new Canberras in 72. In terms of choppers, I was delighted to see the iconic Chinook, but would now like a 48 Puma (lots of versions and users). In the longer term, I's like to see Airfix update their C-130, and perhaps offer some other classic transports like the Beverley and Argosy. Finally, like you, I can't understand why Airfix abandoned the big announcement at Telford. Seemed like a winning marketing ploy.

I see airplanes, cars, tanks and the selection are very much saturated the only difference is the scales to buy in those categories. However, in ships we have been seriously neglected would it kill these guys to put out a 1/600 Normandie or an Andrea Doria, ocean liner How many Titanics are we supposed to build?. Maybe a line of easy to build bathtub ship models like Revell used to build only in new tooling. These kits got me into the hobby they were cheap easy to build and you could play with them afterwards they were not just dust collectors which all the modern kits are today. I think the manufacturers look at us old timers and see us dying out in the near future they want new blood who will have new demands from the manufacturers kits the question is what are those demands. I suspect ease of build and cheap cost will be the new generations demands. They will also be wanting more movie inspired kits like Airwolf and Blue thunder were in my childhood.

Really agree about the 1/24 Hurricane for Airfix Peter! I built the Trumpeter 1/24 MKIIc and it was absolutely excellent - full interior and engine detail - the Chinese are actually outdoing Airfix and Revell now in my opinion when it comes to value for money, subjects etc.... Another great video Peter - thanks!! 😀

I'm from Australia here. When they did their Canberra Series in 72nd Scale, I was rather disappointed that they forgot about the Bubble Top Canopy version. Would love to see them do some Australian gear in 72nd like they did many years ago, but in new tooling (a bubble top Canberra is one), plus, maybe, could they try the CAC-Avon Sabre. Maybe a Lincoln bomber to complete the Post-War Strike Wing in Australia.

1/32 EE Lightning from airfix for sure, tamiya need to do a 109-G in 32 scale, yes i know ZM have done, but there kits aren't for everyone. In agreeance with 1/24 hurricane. I really agree with Peter though when i think back to the last 5 kits ive boughts and built there is nothing that has been release in the last 6 years that has peaked my interest. 1/200 Scharnhorst 1/32 Mosquito 1/350 Fuso 1/48 Mig 29 GWH 1/35 jagdpanzer iv L/70a The last airfix kits that remotely interested me were the V-bombers which i brought and built. Id love to know of a new 1:144 dehavilland comet would sell from airfix. Obviously, the old tool still does as they have rereleased it 10-11 times over the years

Totally agree about Tamiya 1/32 real seen massive amounts of action German aircraft so not just a Gustav but ANY 1/32 Luftwaffe plane - ANY because they are better than any thing out there. I think Tamiya have been paid off to stay away from 1/32 German aircraft

Interesting perspective. Have to disagree on a few things though - you (and I) might not like the Gannet much, but in my model club there's been a lot of takers, and more people holding out for a hoped-for RAN decal version. Can't fault Airfix's Bulldog release either - pre-WW2 fighters are pretty much an open market right now and I think Airfix was right to release that kit. Hopefully a Hawker Fury in 48th is next. As for Tamiya's F-35 trio - it's set to be one of the most common frontline fighters over the next couple of decades, and will appeal more to younger modelers, so I wouldn't be better against Tamiya on that one. I will agree with you on the 24th Hawker Hurricane though. I think Airfix should consider a re-tool of that kit, along with the 24th Mustang. Also, my bet is on Airfix coming through with a 48th scale Jaguar, along with a 72nd Stirling. And both will sell well.

Thank peter, fully agree with your suggestions! I would love a 1:48 jag, especially if possible to have a magnificent 3 tones desert scheme French jag

That would be cool! They could also have the Nato Arctic scheme, Indian scheme (another good market) and Oman scheme.

Intresting conversation Peter, Airfix are there own worst enemy they have a formula for chossing kits that actualy proclueds them from doing anything that could be popular so they re-tool what they have done before. 100s of people asked for the new Royal Navy Aircraft carrier and they flatly said no, they tell us ships dont sell, yet Trumpeter doe loads of ship releases with loads of errors in them but they sell in droves. In Airfix eyes ships dont fit the formula where they can sell lots of variants. personaly think its crazy. I have bought a lot less Airfix last 24 months for the reasons yo say re-releasing lots of stuff I already have from them recently. Tamiya are in compleat decline for me, they have not engaged the new digital world at all, sat on there hands trading on thier name. the new 1/35 Panzer 1 a case in point its an improved molding of what you would have got in the 80s, no innovation, sealed up hatches vison ports you cannot model open really really poor. All model companis should be putting the consumer first but they are focusing on marketing formulas which dont neciseraly translate into the correct decisions. I am so fed up of Spitfires and WW2 rehashed kits. agree with you all the way on this
