My family has a tradition of leaving riddles on cards and guessing what the gift is before opening. We go around 1 by 1, reading our hint out loud so everyone can guess, then open it and show the room. Ends up taking like 5 hours for everyone to get through their gifts, but it's always a fun time.

Every year my parents would buy me and my sister each a Christmas ornament for the tree, they would usually be very nice expensive ones that were similar but differing in design or color. We had one for every single Christmas since our birth, so by the time that we moved out and started our own little trees we would have really beautiful ornaments to put on them and it still continues every year. This is actually one of my favorite traditions around this time of year.

We're really just starting out with our own little family this year, but I think down the line we'll continue my husband's tradition to give our kids a toy no matter how old they are, until they have kids of their own. In my family we open all gifts on Christmas morning. However if you were willing to sacrifice your dignity on Christmas Eve you could perform in any manner to open one gift. This usually meant singing a Christmas carols or improve dancing to Nut Cracker, once my sister put on a puppet show. None of us had any broadway talent so it was exactly what you'd expect.

My family likes to get together on christmas eve and do a white elephant gift exchange. we draw to see who goes first, they open a gift then follows by the next person who then gets to choose what the previous family members have opened or to choose a new gift. And no 1 family member can have their gift stolen more than twice. Its always good for a few laughs.
