Streisand's lung capacity while singing is one of the things she is known for. That and her incredible resonant, powerfull, pitch perfect and crystal clear voice. She is the dream of all vocalist : having a total control of her singing voice with a unbelievable breath control. The late 60s and the 70s, she was at the peak of her voice, still unmatchable to this day (: She is so talented that even in her late 70s she could still hold a belt over 10 secondes with incredible power. She's also never been trained by a vocal coach either, it's all natural for her. Her singing voice was randomly discovered when she was auditioning for a acting job when she was in her early 20s. She's 80 now and doesn't sing much anymore, she deserves to rest after such an amazing career.

U cannot beat performers from the 60's & 70's. She has been a superstar for 6 decades & is still making albums today. She has accomplished almost everything in her lifetime like acting, singing, directing. I think she is also a humanitarian if I am not wrong. The woman is a powerhouse & as you've just heard her voice is as well. I think she was robbed at the Oscars for not winning for Yentl, not just for the film but for the music alone. It was a very moving film & beautifully captured in that cinematic style with subtle tones. Barbra's last album Walls was wonderful too & like the ABBA Voyage album I also have a vinyl copy of it too as I only choose to buy the best on vinyl these days. Things have been quiet for Barbra lately I can only presume coz of Covid but I am sure she is probably working on another album but nearing 80 now she doesn't have to prove anything any more just that she is a survivor & as she would put it...a work in progress.

Barbra Streisand was born April 24, 1942. She will be 80 years old next year. Her first solo album was released in February 1963, and she took top honors at the Grammys, winning Album of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance. Streisand has been winning awards and breaking records ever since. She is the only artist in history to have a #1 album on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for six consecutive decades (1960s to 2010s). If she can manage another #1 album this decade, she will extend that streak to seven decades, and would be almost unmatchable in my lifetime. She is known for that powerful voice and has over 60 albums to her credit. She's also starred in over 20 movies. "A Piece of Sky" is the finale from the musical movie "Yentl" which Barbra Streisand directed. Streisand became the first woman to co-write, co-produce, direct and star in a major studio motion picture, as well as sing on the award-winning soundtrack. The original song score won an Oscar for composers Alan & Marilyn Bergman and Michel Legrand. The song is about never giving up following your dream: "What's wrong with wanting more? If you can fly, then soar. With all there is, why settle for, just a piece of sky?" I am glad that you enjoyed the song, David. The expression on your face as you listened to Streisand hold and belt that final note was priceless! I had goosebumps as I watched you react! Thank you so much!

Oh...the look on your face when Babs continues on with that note. It is a classic my friend. Thank U for appreciating Barbra for the talent that she has & Yentl & the songs contained therein were wonderful. She has always given her all to be a superstar & still is tho I must admit at almost 80 now I doubt whether she could ever replicate this performance. This was 1983, a long time ago & she was 41. Oh, she can still sing but in a much lower key these days. U are right tho in thinking....how can a human carry a note like that for so long....I guess only Barbra could as I think she wrote this song & many others for the film. I would still classify her as one of the greatest singers from the 60's we ever had & maybe Judy Garland would be up there too but Judy didn't survive the stardom that Barbra has achieved tho she was a great entertainer for that time period. U have a good taste in music which sure beats the babble that is being made today. Keep these coming as your expressions are priceless.

It is beautifully philosophical and uplifting in that sense, but her vocals and the interjections of the song "Papa, can you hear me?" and that soaring climax always do me in. Barbra did not want to sing in "Yentl" or have it be anything close to a "musical". But no studio would get involved (financing, distribution, etc.) unless she agreed to sing in it. As director she thought of a device that was at least a bit of a compromise: all of the songs were internal monologues and she only opened her mouth to sing when she was alone. Except in this final scene. She also would not allow it to be marketed as a "musical". Instead, it was called "A film with music" on all print ads.
