Blenders grease pencil is still relatively new, the thing is blender is first a 3d program but has many different parts of editing programs that are getting better with updates. I did notice you were using a slightly older version of blender, and while I understand the need to stay in a version to help flow... but there have been quite a few updates since 2.9 But yeah there are definitely some quality of life issues still present with feeling a bit wonky at times.... just updates are something to keep up on

The lines were transparent-ish in 12:58 because the strength (the opacity of the line) should be set to 1 in order to be fully black. For some reason it is set on 0.6 by default every time you open a project, which you can solve by sliding the “strength” bar all the way to the right (the blue in the top center, next to “size” and to the pressure activator).

You can also change edges to "freestyle edges" under edge in edit mode. Then for the render check "freestyle". There are many settings for the contours it adds! I think grease pencil in blender is pretty cool, but I'm coming to explore 2D animation from being a 3D sculptor and using Zbrush all the time. GP may seem similar to f2f or tweened animation on the surface and kinda seems lacking as a "classic" animation tool but I think you begin to see it's also very different with different abilities when you knew the 3D features of Blender! Sort of like Cintiq : Paper. Feels similar, but is a very different tool

You can always animate in any program you want. Export it as a PNG sequence with a transparent background. Then import it into Blender through an Images as Planes 'Animated Sequence'. This will give place your animation on a plane mesh you can move in your 3D scene. Also be sure to use the alpha versions of Blender which usually has GP updates that improve performances (ie 3.3 right now).

There will always be someone who will tell you that "This is garbage because it's not all hand drawn, bla, bla ...". I think it's cool and your 3D background is well made. The Blender compositor is super useful even if you just want to compose together different image sequences. (Just drag them from your file-explorer into the compositor view and set them from "Single Image" to "Image-Sequence") The best thing, most settings of almost every node in the compositor can also be animated with keyframes. That is powerful stuff. Got to stop myself or I'll keep rambling about how much fun this thing is.

This is the first time I see your channel, so I think I have not been influenced by being used to the previous animations. First of all thank you so much for doing this video showing what is possible with a free program. Your first intro had a special charm to it that made it great for me. The spare treatment of the background was awesome and even the shy movement of the character was endearing. Of course your new character animation is wonderful and much more fluid, so I think that was worth it. The 3d background I feel would benefit from a similar hand-drawn treatment to incorporate it more with the character. I also think the symmetrical modeling you had would benefit with the wonkiest you had previously. It just has more of your signature. Nonetheless phenomenal work, and thanks for all the tips.

So, for the rendering options. A much quicker way to do it is to go into the outliner (at the top right) and click the "Filter" button (looks like a funnel). There's an option for "Restriction Toggles". This allows you to have more options in the outliner other than the eyeball. If you click the camera that gives the ability to toggle rendering,

Though I don't use it for 2D animation, Blender has been my go-to app for modeling (I can't use anything else, as a person who started with 3Ds Max) so I want the app to keep improving. The more 2D animators that try Blender, the more feedback the team receive, thus making the app better for everyone. Nice presentation. Some suggestions: - There are some black dots in your drawing. You can fix this by selecting all frames and switching to edit mode and selecting all geometry, then use grease pencil > cleanup > delete loose points operator, adjusting the limit - You can control basic lightning of your grease pencil drawing by making world settings > viewport display color darker/lighter - Check out cell shadings. Basically you just throw in color ramp and control values there. - You could also use Lineart for your 3d scene to make it looking more 2d-ish. - To overcome the issue of character looking flat when camera angle changes you can always use object constrains and make it face the camera at all times

I know someone has probably mentioned this already, but cycles is more realistic with the raytraced lighting and there are settings to denoise cycles if that is an issue for you. Yes, it does take much longer but the final product is just that much better in my opinion. For all of my blender work I gravitate more towards the cycles render engine for this reason. Also its worth mentioning that not all materials and settings are interchangeable between eevee and cycles so for more complex shaders it is recommended you stick with either cycles or eevee to not ruin those shaders when switching between those render engines. also there is a way to have your grease pencil cast a shadow and that is to convert it to a mesh. this does remove the option to go back and edit the grease pencil however it will then correctly interact with raytraced lighting and cast a shadow of its own. hope this helps for future blender projects!

Although I really like the detail of the previous version in which when he smiled he shows his huge dog teeth, very much in the Ghibli Studio style, in this new version you made his teeth small to enhance or maintain his adorableness or cuteness all the time... but the large teeth surprise, it is not what you expect, it gives more personality to the work, I don't know, it creates a fun contrast.

You would go to a frame, then hover the mouse over the panel / value and hit the i key to set a keyframe. Then move to a later frame, then go over to the panel and change the value, then press the I key. It's a lot faster in practice.
