Fun fact: there actually is a deleted scene where Kenai does try to tell Koda what really happened to his mom without the Phill Collins song, but was cut because the filmmakers wanted the scene to let the visuals tell the story. While the deleted scene has its own issues, particularly with Koda piecing together the fate of his mom way too quickly, I felt it was a much stronger scene and would’ve definitely been worth keeping in.

Compared to what kinds of films we are getting now, especially from Disney, this is a genuinely great movie that is highly underrated. It has been forgotten in pop culture but it is a delight to witness humans' actions with our environment and the powerful message of friendship. I love this movie!

This is one of my dad's favorite movies. He researches Indigenous American tribes, so it's up his wheelhouse and so far, he hasn't complained and to the best of my knowledge Innuits haven't complained yet, at least in terms of representation. Personally, I think the movie is solid where it counts. The animal animation is spot on, the backgrounds feel like an elevated version of Yellowstone National Park, the drama and themes are explored very well, a fantastic music score, and the leads and antagonists are quite unique for Disney characters. Also, that line where Koda corrects Keni was improvised. The songs are mixed for me, with Great Spirits being a strong contender for my pick for Phil Collin's best song, next to the transformation music. The comedy really is weak, with only three jokes working for me. It'd be one thing if the jokes were fast paced, but a majority of them drag on and that's what really kills it for me. Overall, I'd say its admirable. I'm glad it's gaining a following. I don't see it reaching the same levels of a following as Treasure Planet, or even Atlantis The Lost Empire. However, it did financially well and I'm very glad its detractors are apologizing at worst, and/or becoming fans at best.

Very silly story, but this was my first introduction to bears as a young child (around toddler age or so), and I was just so mesmerized by them. How they looked, acted, sounded, how strong yet gentle they could be, how beautiful they are yet being so deadly, it was just a whole new thing. It definitely started my hype for them. And, given my name, they are my autistic hyperfixation. Ever since I was 9, I started to study them. 14 years later and that love has *never* swayed one bit. Still love them as a 23 year old!

This movie holds a special place for me in my childhood since I saw it in theaters and was blown away by its animation, music and story. I think the movie holds up mostly. Does it have its problems? Sure, not all the comedy works and, the less said about the movie’s handling of “No Way Home” and its placement in the movie, the better. The scene it plays over shouldn’t have had the song there because it destroys what would’ve been an amazing scene in the film. Also, when you showed Koda roasting Kenai, I found it hilarious especially knowing its history behind the scenes. To sum it up, Kenai’s actor flubbed the line he was supposed to say and Koda’s actor, being quick witted, improvised Koda’s response on the spot. I like all the songs in the movie but my favorites especially would have to be “On My Way” and “Welcome To Our Family” (the song at the salmon run).

If we ignore two specific characters that don't a-moose me at all, I really like this film. And I don't care what people say, THAT scene with the Phil Collins song playing over it (won't describe it more) is heartbreaking. It really works on me somehow. I'm glad you gave this film another chance. It's clearly not perfect, but as Stitch would say: "It's broken, but still good". EDIT: I am so voting for Nimona for the next one.

I feel this is definitely one of the most underrated movies from Disney’s catalog. It’s personally not a top twenty for me, or even in my favorites for the post Renaissance. But I feel it was kinda trying to give a more comical approach with Spirit, just Bears instead. I really love the story of owing up to your mistakes and taking responsibility, and learning to respect nature. I feel in a way Kenai was the “villain” considering how much of a brat he is at first. He is forced to reflect into the toxic masculine man he was becoming if Sitka hadn’t transformed him into a bear, forcing him to see the world and humans through a bear’s eyes. In a way, he was basically becoming Gaston or Kocuom, where strength is all that matters and men aren’t allowed to express emotions or say the word love. I adore Koda as a character, despite he can be a bit annoying at times, but he’s a cub. The moose are the weakest part of the movie, they basically give me Beavis and Butthead vibes (especially in the sequel, ugh) and their dumb humor wouldn’t be so painful if they weren’t in the part when Koda learns Kenai is why his mother isn’t coming back. It kinda ruins the heartbreaking moment and absolute grief Koda is experiencing, learning his mother was killed by the bear who became his best friend. I get what they were trying to go for, that brothers forgive each other and stuff, but the moose didn’t need to be there to convince Koda to forgive Kenai. I kinda agree with the thing about the song playing over the part Kenai is actually saying he killed a bear. The song doesn’t suffice enough to make enough emotions for me to cry at what’s supposed to be a very dark moment. It more comes off that he lost his favorite toy or something

I have to agree with you. Aside from Phil Collins singing No Way Out during the moment when Kenai is telling Koda on what happened, this is truly one of Disney’s more underrated animated features. Also, one thing you forgot to mention in your review is the aspect ratio change. At the beginning of the film, the movie is cropped in a 1.75:1. But once we cut to the shot of the forest in the morning, the rest of the film is 2.35:1. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

I must say, I love Brother Bear. Sure, I don't think it's a masterpiece, yet it's near-perfect (3.5/4 stars), but it is an honorable mention for me as a favorite, even though I'm not entirely sure. Also, not to worry; you're not the only one who gives some movies another chance. There are at least several movies that I gave another chance to and regret disliking it. Here's my list: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Barnyard (2006), Congo (1995), The Grey (2011), Transformers (2007), Nacho Libre (2006), The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), The Predator (2018), Jaws (1975), and last but not least, the modern remake of The Lion King (2019).
